Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE goalie Mackenzie Skapski made 28 saves for his 3rd shutout of the season and 2nd of the week in a 4-0 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings in WHL action on Saturday night.

The ICE (7-12-1-0) opened the scoring early in the first period as Sam Reinhart scored with a spin around shot from the corner.
The ICE made it 2-0 on a 2-man advantage with Sam Reinhart scoring with a low shot from the corner.

Kootenay 5 Brandon 3 Game #19
Cranbrook, BC – The Kootrenay ICE scored 4 first period goals in a 5-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings in WHL action on Friday night.
Kyle O’Conner and Jaedon Descheneau each had 1 goal and 1 assist and Joey Leach had 2 assists to lead the attack.
The win ended a 7 game home losing streak.
The ICE (6-12-1-0) opened the scoring with Austin Vetterl finding a loose puck behind the goalie and got his first as a member of the ICE.
2:10 later Jaedon Descheneau made it 2-0 as he cruised through the high slot and scored with a wrist shot on the stick side.
33 seconds later the ICE made it 3-0 as Brock Montgomery fed Sam Reinhart in front of the net and his high shot beat the goalie on the glove side.
After the 3rd goal the Wheat Kings took a timeout.
Later in the period the Wheat Kings (9-10-2-1) got on the board with Jace Hawryluk alone in front of the net for a quick shot and a goal.
ICE scored 7 seconds into a powerplay as Collin Shirley from the high slot beat the goalie of the stick side.
Before scoring 4 goals in the first period the ICE season high was 2 goals in a period.
To start the second period the Wheat Kings changed goalies as Curtis Honey replaced Corbin Boes.

ICE EKFH Fundraiser
On Wednesday, November 28th when the ICE host the Edmonton Oil Kings, the team will be using ice cube sticks during warm up and in the first period of the game. The sticks will be auctioned off in a silent auction during the game behind Section U with all the money raised going to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health.. The winning bidders will receive their ice cube sticks after the game from the ICE Players.
Tickets to the game on Wednesday, November 28th at 7:00 pm are on sale now at the Kootenay ICE Office or by calling 250-417-0322.
East Kootenay Foundation for Health is a public charitable foundation and non-profit society. Its mission is to provide funding to assist the East Kootenay Regional Hospital and other community health care facilities in meeting the needs of the region.
Presently EKFH holds over 30+ funds in trust for hospitals and health care facilities located in the East Kootenay Region. The foundation is run by a volunteer board of directors and welcomes interest for board and/or volunteer positions. Calgary, Alb – Kootenay ICE forward Brock Montgomery scored his 1st career hat-trick and goalie Mackenzie Skapski made 17 saves for his 2nd shutout in a 4-0 win over the Calgary Hitmen in WHL action on Monday night.
The win ends their losing streak at 8 games and stopped Calgary's winning streak at 5 games.
ICE (5-12-1-0) scored on the first shift of the game with Brock Montgomery ending a 7-game goalless streak with a rebound goal near the crease.
On the powerplay Montgomery notched his 2nd of the game with a wrist shot that beat the goalie low on the stick side.
It’s Montgomery’s 3rd multi-goal game of the season and 5th of his career.
In the second period the Hitmen (13-5-1-2) didn’t get a shot on goal until 3 minutes remained in the period.
In the third period Montgomery completed the hat-trick on a 5-on-3 powerplay with a redirection from the top of the crease.

Cranbrook, BC – Moose Jaw scored 3 first period goals in a 4-1 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Saturday night.
The Warriors (8-8-3-3) scored 3 goals in a span of 1:49 and opened the scoring on the powerplay with a one-time shot from Justin Kirsch.
1:28 later the Warriors made it 2-0 with a powerplay goal from defenseman Joel Edmundson.
21 seconds later the Warriors made it 3-0 with Brandon Potomak scoring his 1st career goal on a goal mouth scramble.

Calgary, AB – Team BC struck Gold at the 2012 Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup with a convincing 9-3 victory over Team Alberta in the championship game on Sunday afternoon at Father David Bauer arena in Calgary, AB.
Jansen Harkins racked up four goals, including a hat trick in the first period, and an assist for a five-point effort to pace BC to the victory over the two-time defending champion Alberta side. Harkins, a first-round pick of the Prince George Cougars in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, earned Player of the Game honors for his five-point outing.
“Our whole team played well through the whole tournament, and I finally got my share of putting it in today,” said Harkins, a product of North Vancouver who plays for the Vancouver NW Giants of the BC Major Midget League. “I’m happy to have been able to do this for my team.”
Matthew Barzal, the first overall pick from the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, scored once and set up three more and Prince George Cougars prospect Brad Morrison scored two goals and three points while Swift Current Broncos prospect scored once and chipped in two assists for Team BC.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game today, and we knew if we didn’t play the 60 minutes, they’d be getting that Gold medal,” said Barzal, who finished the tournament with three goals and eight points in four games.
Brad Forrest – with a goal and an assist – Braylon Shmyr and Jordan Xavier scored for Team Alberta, who couldn’t find a way to slow down BC’s collection of offensive stars.
“It took four games to get here, but everyone bought in and everybody took on their role,” said BC head coach Ryan Weber. “There is a lot of high-end talent in our room, but if everybody doesn’t work hard and buy in, we don’t get the result we had today.”
Taz Burman turned in a 33-save effort in goal for Team BC, who led 5-3 after an exciting opening period then added three more in the second period and one more in the third to capture the Gold medal.
Patrick Dea stopped eight of 12 shots he faced in the Alberta net before giving way to Zach Sawchenko at the 14:30 mark of the first period. Sawchenko, who was named to the tournament All-Star team, made 24 saves on 29 shots the rest of the way.

Calgary, AB – Team Saskatchewan claimed the Bronze medal at the 2012 Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup after defeating Team Manitoba 2-1 in the third-place contest on Sunday morning at Father David Bauer arena in Calgary, AB. Defenceman Shane Collins broke a 0-0 stalemate with just over five minutes to play in the third period while Reagan Nagy scored into an empty net with less than two minutes remaining. Meyer Nell got Manitoba on the board just 16 seconds after Nagy’s goal, but that’s as close as Manitoba would get as they finish fourth in the tournament. Netminder Logan Flodell turned in a solid 29-save performance to post the victory while Mario Petit stopped 35 of 36 shots he faced in a valiant effort for Manitoba.

Brad Forrest – with a goal and an assist – Braylon Shmyr and Jordan Xavier scored for Team Alberta, who couldn’t find a way to slow down BC’s collection of offensive stars.
“It took four games to get here, but everyone bought in and everybody took on their role,” said BC head coach Ryan Weber. “There is a lot of high-end talent in our room, but if everybody doesn’t work hard and buy in, we don’t get the result we had today.”
Taz Burman turned in a 33-save effort in goal for Team BC, who led 5-3 after an exciting opening period then added three more in the second period and one more in the third to capture the Gold medal.
Patrick Dea stopped eight of 12 shots he faced in the Alberta net before giving way to Zach Sawchenko at the 14:30 mark of the first period. Sawchenko, who was named to the tournament All-Star team, made 24 saves on 29 shots the rest of the way.

Calgary, AB – Team Saskatchewan claimed the Bronze medal at the 2012 Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup after defeating Team Manitoba 2-1 in the third-place contest on Sunday morning at Father David Bauer arena in Calgary, AB. Defenceman Shane Collins broke a 0-0 stalemate with just over five minutes to play in the third period while Reagan Nagy scored into an empty net with less than two minutes remaining. Meyer Nell got Manitoba on the board just 16 seconds after Nagy’s goal, but that’s as close as Manitoba would get as they finish fourth in the tournament. Netminder Logan Flodell turned in a solid 29-save performance to post the victory while Mario Petit stopped 35 of 36 shots he faced in a valiant effort for Manitoba.

Cranbrook, BC – Vancouver Giants Marek Tvrdon had 2 goals and 2 assists in a 6-3 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Saturday night.
The ICE wrapped up a 6 game home with a 0-5-1-0 record.
The Giants (5-11-0-0) opened the scoring midway through the first period with Marek Tvrdon alone in front of the net for redirection goal off a pass from the corner from Kale Kessy.
Early in the second period the ICE (4-10-1-0) ICE tied the game on a shorthanded goal by Jon Martin who was alone near the crease and backhanded the puck under goalies’ pad.
The Giants then scored 3 goals in 3 1/2 minutes with Anthony Ast, Kale Kessy and Jackson Houck giving them a 4-1 lead.
The ICE changed goalies to start the third period with Mackenzie Skapski replacing Wyatt Hoflin.

Team BC finished the round-robin portion of the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record, including a 4-3 shootout victory over Team Alberta (2-0-1) on the opening night of the tournament. Alberta held a 3-0 lead but BC stormed back for three goals in the third period and won it on Jansen Harkins’ shootout goal. Seattle Thunderbirds’ Bantam Draft pick Matthew Barzal and Swift Current Broncos’ prospect Glenn Gawdin led Team B.C. in scoring with four points apiece.

The ICE (4-8-1-0) opened the scoring midway through the first period as Zach McPhee fed Jordyn Boyd in the slot and he scored with a wrist shot on the glove side. Last year both players played for Everett.
The Blades (7-9-0-0) tied the game with shorthanded breakaway goal by Josh Nicholls.
Early in the second period the Blades took a 2-1 lead as Josh Nicholls got his 2nd of the game on a nice pass from Matej Stransky.

Calgary, AB – Team Alberta skated to an 8-1 victory over Team Manitoba in Game 4 of the 2012 Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup on Friday afternoon at Father David Bauer arena in Calgary, AB. Nick Merkley and Braylon Shmyr each tallied a goal and three assists for Alberta, which improves to 1-1 in round-robin play, while Patrick Dea stopped 20 of 21 shots to post the win. Meyer Nell scored the only goal for Manitoba, which drops to 0-2 through their first two round robin games. Alberta closes out their round-robin schedule versus Saskatchewan on Saturday afternoon while Manitoba faces Team BC on Saturday night to wrap up the round-robin.
Alberta’s victory over Manitoba means that Team BC earns a berth in Sunday’s Gold medal game as BC already defeated Alberta and Saskatchewan, both 1-1 through their first two round-robin games.

ICE Add Another Forward

ICE Trade For Forward
Cranbrook, BC – Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the Club has acquired 18-year-old Forward Austin Vetterl from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for 1995 born prospects Kyle Krabben (Defenseman) and Douglas Morris (Forward).
“With our injuries and the departure of our captain, our line up is very depleted heading in to the three games this weekend. Austin will bring much needed experience to a roster that is currently the youngest in the WHL. We are hoping for him to play significant minutes in all key situations,” added Chynoweth
As a result of today's transaction, the ICE have 22 players on their roster, including two goalies, seven defensemen and 13 forwards. Of those players, there are two 1992 born players, three 1993 born players, seven 1994 born players, eight 1995 born players and two 1996 born players.
The next home action for the ICE will be tomorrow as they host the Saskatoon Blades at 7:00 pm. Tickets are available at the Kootenay ICE Office or by calling 250-417-0322.
