The Western Hockey League announced today that Nathan Lieuwen, of the Kootenay Ice, has been named the VAUGHN WHL Goaltender of the Month for September/October.
The 20 year-old goaltender posted a 9-2-0-2 record through September and October with one shut-out. Lieuwen’s remarkable 1.45 goals-against average and 0.948 save percentage leads all WHL goaltenders, allowing just 19 goals on 365 shots-against in 788 minutes played, averaging over 30 shots a game.
Lieuwen’s consistent play has helped the Ice post a 11-3-0-2 record through September/October for 24 points to lead the WHL Central Division, the Eastern Conference and entire WHL. His efforts also earned him a Three Star selection seven times, with four being 1st Stars.
Lieuwen, an Abbotsford, BC native, is in his fourth full season with Kootenay and helped lead the Ice to their 3rd WHL Championship title last season, being named 2011 WHL Playoff Most Valuable Player. The Buffalo Sabres selected the 6’5” goaltender in the 6th round of the 2011 NHL Draft.
