Cranbrook, BC – Red Deer Rebels’s John Persson scored the game winner in a 4-3 overtime win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Saturday night.
No scoring in the first period and the ICE lost their Captain Drew Czerwonka to an injury and he didn’t return.
In the second period the Rebels (11-4-0-1) intercepted a pass at the ICE line, Locke Muller’s shot from the corner was stopped and John Persson was near the net to push in the rebound.
The ICE (12-3-1-2) tied the game as Joey Leach from deep in his zone tried a stretch pass to the Rebels’ line that a defender stopped but didn’t control and that got Brock Montgomery on a breakaway and he scored with a wrist shot high on the glove side.
Early in the third period the Rebels took a 2-1 lead while shorthanded as Turner Elson was stopped on a breakaway but scored on the rebound.
The ICE tied the game again as Elgin Pearce was awarded a penalty shot and he scored with a wrist shot high on the glove side.
It was Pearce’s 1st career penalty shot and it’s the 9th successful penalty shot in ICE history.
ICE took their only lead of the game as Eric Benoit extended his goal scoring streak to 3 games when he was in the slot to bang in a Montgomery rebound.
At 15:46 Dylen McKinlay was stopped on a penalty shot.
The Rebels pulled the goalie for an extra attacker with 1:50 left and scored as Turner Elson got his 2nd of the game on a rebound.
With 7 seconds left in overtime John Person got the winner with a long shot that hit the post on the far side of the goalie's glove side and went into the net.
The ICE winning streak is stopped at 5 games but have points in the last 6.
The home winning streak is halted at 6 games but the point streak is extended to 7 games.
The ICE will host Tri City on Wednesday.

Cranbrook, BC -- The Kootenay ICE Hockey Club is pleased to announce that the green and white sticks from tonight's game raised over $3,000 for the new playground at Moir Park.
On Saturday, November 5th when the ICE hosted the Red Deer Rebels, the team used green and white sticks during warm up and the first period that were auctioned off in a silent auction. Goaltender Nathan Lieuwen game used stick brought in the most money at $400.
The playground at Moir Park playground project is being put together by the Junior Chamber International - Kootenay and is estimated to cost $75,000.00.
