Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE forward Sam Reinhart had 2 goals and 1 assist and Mackenzie Skapski made 19 saves as the Kootenay ICE beat the Regina Pats 4-1 in WHL action on Friday night.
The victory was the 600th regular season win in Franchise history.
Kootenay opened the scoring late in the first period as Eric Benoit was near the crease and banged in a loose puck past the reaching goalies’ pad.
In the second period the ICE had full 2-minute 2-man advantage and with 11 seconds left on the powerplay Brock Montgomery scored on a spin around move with a forehand shot to the top corner.
The ICE added to their lead on a 2-on-1 break with Sam Reinhart putting in a Jakub Prochazka rebound.
Regina scored 1:21 later with Trent Oullette pushing in a loose puck under the goalie.
The ICE scored their 2nd powerplay goal of the game with Sam Reinhart in the middle slot with a wrist shot that beat the goalie high on the glove side.
Jakun Prochazka and Collin Shirley both earned their 1st WHL points and Jordyn Boyd earned his 1st point in an ICE uniform.
The crowd was the smallest for an ICE home opener.
The game featured two of the youngest teams in the WHL as the Pats had 10 rookies and the ICE had 6 rookies dressed for the game.
ICE forward Petr Vesely, from the Czech Republic, played in his 1st WHL Game.
Jordyn Boyd (summer trade with Everett) played his 1st game in an ICE uniform.
Defenseman Tanner Faith played his 1st game of the season for the ICE, two years ago he played four games as a 15-year-old call-up.
Drew Czerwonka and Wyatt Hoflin are the only two ICE players yet to play in a game this regular season.
Pats goalie Teagan Sacher made his 1st WHL start.
Regina’s #1 goalie Matt Hewitt was not available for the game and the Pats’ had an emergency back-up goalie.
Pat’s Head Coach Pat Conacher was not on the bench (personal reasons) and the team was directed by Malcom Cameron and Josh Dixon.
Dryden Hunt (born in Kimberley) and Kade Pilton (played KIJHL w/Fernie 2 years ago) were among the Regina scratches.
Former ICE forward Adam Rossignol played his first game in Cranbrook since being traded to Swift Current last season.
Last season Emil Sylvegard played for QMJHL Drummondville.
Henry Hardason is a native of Sweden but is not an import player as his home is now Phoenix, Arizona.
The ICE will host Lethbridge on Saturday night.

Last season they split the 4 meetings with each team winning 1 game at home and on the road.
The ICE are 0-2-0-0 and the Pats, who won in overtime in Swift Current on Wednesday, are 1-2-0-0.
This is the home opener for the ICE who will play 12 of the next 13 games at home.
Last season the ICE attendance was 100,970 for an average of 2,805.
Going back to last season the ICE have lost 11 games in a row. (last 5 regular season games, 4 playoff games, 2 this season)
This is the second time the Pats are the opposition for the ICE home opener. On October 13, 2000 the ICE beat Regina 5-3 in the first ever game at the Rec-Plex.

Special Guest Coach
The Kootenay ICE had a special guest at practice today as Tom Renney was a guest coach. Once the NHL season starts Renney will be in his first year as the Associate Coach with the Detroit Red Wings. The last 3 years the Cranbrook native was the Head Coach of the Edmonton Oilers.

12 Things
1. Schedule - I think it’ll work out to be a good thing that the ICE will be playing 12 of the next 13 games at home. With such a young team, new coaching staff, all the practice time will help give the club a chance to work on systems and fine tune everyone’s game.
2. 2010 Bantam Draft – The ICE had 7 picks in the first 4 rounds of the Draft and selected 11 players in 7 rounds. 8 of the players selected are on the roster.
3. Youth – The ICE have 11 players 16/17 year olds on the roster. Other teams who are very young include Brandon (10), Kelowna (10), Lethbridge (11), Moose Jaw (12), Portland (11), Prince George (10). Most teams still have 3-4 cuts to make before they finalize the roster so these numbers will change. I’m not sure about the other teams, but the ICE, as usual, are giving the young players regular playing time
4. Attendance – Traditionally the crowds at ICE home games is small at the beginning of the season. If it happens again there will be criticism from media around the league. Sure would be nice if the players had big crowds at the weekend games.
5. First 2 games – The ICE played what is expected to be the 2 of the best teams in the East Conference who had very veteran line-ups. They trailed by 1-goal going into the 3rd period in each game. They never had a lead. Of the 10 goals against, 7 came in the first or last 3 minutes of the period, 4 came in the first or last 2 minutes of a period.
6. Best So Far – The ICE looked their best in the 1st period in Calgary. They outshot the Hitmen 14-8 and used their team speed on the forecheck. The defense used their size to keep things calm in their own zone. Unfortunately they trailed 1-0 after the period.
7. Roadrunners – The line combination of Descheneau-Philp-Cable was fun to watch as they have speed to burn. I’m not sure how many times they will be together but you will notice them when they are on the ice.
8. Imports – As expected the 2 new players from the Czech Republic are taking some time to adjust to the WHL. The biggest roadblock is they knew very little English we they came to Cranbrook. The fact the ICE have 2 players from outside Canada has created a stir in the community and around the league.
9. Captain/Assistants – Expect the ICE to make the decision on who will wear the letters once they are healthy and they finalize the over-age situation.
10. New Guys – With 9 rookies and 1 player acquired in a trade you’ll need some time to get know the newest players on the roster.
11. Patience – This club is going to look a lot different on January 1st. I’m not talking about roster changes, just the maturation of the current players. The potential is definitely there and it’s going to be fun to see them develop.
12. Expectations – Young or not the organization expects to and strives to make the playoffs.

ICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE enter this week's action with a 0-2-0-0 record (0-0-0-0 at home, 0-2-0-0 on the road, 0-0-0 in overtime) and tied for fifth place in the CENTRAL DIVISION...The ICE finished the 2011-2012 regular season with a 36-26-6-4 record (19-12-3-2 at home, 17-14-3-2 on the road, 5-6-4 in overtime) and in eighth place in the EASTERN CONFERENCE and 13th place overall in the WHL...This week KOOTENAY will start a six game home stand (September 28 - October 14).
SEASON TICKETS: Season Tickets are still available until Friday, October 5th…The ICE Office currently has many great seats available…On Tuesday, October 9th at 10:00 am individual game tickets for the remainder of the 2012-2013 regular season will go on sale to the general public.

Calgary 5 Kootenay 1 Game #2
Calgary, Alb – Calgary Hitmen forward Zane Jones had 2 goals in a 5-1 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Saturday night.
The ICE had a very strong first period but Calgary scored the only goal of the opening frame with Zane Jones alone near the crease and he scored after an unsuccessful wrap-around by Brady Brassart.
In the second period the Hitem took a 2-1 lead on a 2-on-1 break with Cody Sylvester scoring his 3rd of the year.
Late in the period Luke Philp scored with a wrist shot that beat the goalie high on the stick side. It’s Philp’s first goal of the year and 2nd of his career. Joey Leach had the assist and has points in both ICE games.
Early in the third period on a delayed penalty Calgary defenseman Darian Henry scored his 1st career goal on a redirection in the crease.

Kootenay @ Calgary Game #2 Preview
The Kootenay ICE are in Calgary tonight in the first of 8 meetings this season.
Last season the ICE won the season series with a record of 5-2-1-0.
Kootenay opened the season with a 5-3 loss in Edmonton on Thursday.
Last night Calgary played in Red Deer and won 3-2.
Cody Sylvester (brother of former ICE Captain Dustin) leads the club with 2 goals and 3 points.
After missing the playoffs in 2011, last year the Hitmen finished third overall in the Eastern Conference. They lost in the first round of the playoffs to Brandon in five games.

Edmonton 5 Kootenay 3 Game #1
Edmonton, Alb – Edmonton’s Keegan Lowe had 1 goal and 2 assists in a 5-3 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Thursday night.
In the first period the Oil Kings scored 2 on their first 3 shots with Michael St. Croix (45 goals last season) and Brandon Baddock (1st WHL game) scoring the goals.
ICE forward Jon Martin defelcted a Joey Leach point shot to cut the lead to 2-1.
With 1:01 left Keegan Lowe made it 3-1 with a wrist shot from the point that beat the screened goalie.
In the second period the ICE killed off 2 early Edmonton powerplays and at the end of a Kootenay penalty Tanner Muth scored with a wrist shot from the blueline.
For the 3rd time in the game the Oil Kings had a 2-goal lead with Henrik Samuelsson get a rebound to make it 4-2.
ICE replied with a power-play goal as Jagger Dirk’s point shot deflected off an Edmonton stick and Brock Montgomery’s skate and it went through the goalie’s legs.
In the third period the Oil Kings made it 5-3 as Cole Benson’s shot from the corner went into the crease and eventually went into the net off the goalies’ skate.
Matthew Thomas, Kyle O’Connor, Collin Shirley and Jakub Prochazka played in their 1st WHL games.
Wyatt Hoflin, Petr Vesely and Kyle Krabben are the only players on the roster with 0 WHL games played.

The previous 2 seasons the ICE had won 12 games in a row against the Oil Kings.
The ICE have a new coaching staff with Head Coach Ryan McGill and Assistant Coach Chad Kletzel on the bench.
During the ICE first 2 years in the league McGill started his coaching career in Edmonton and Kletzel started his WHL career in Edmonton.
The ICE have 25 players on the roster, 15 returning players, 9 rookies and 1 new player acquired during a trade during the off-season.

He was an Assistant to Dave Siciliano and took over the Head Coaching job 10 games into their second season.
McGill is #2 in ICE career regular season wins with 174 (209 Cory Clouston)and #2 in regular season games coached at 350 (360 Cory Clouston).
He is #1 with 42 career playoff wins and 61 career playoff games coached.
Plus he is first in team history with 2 WHL Championships, 7 career Memorial Cup games, 3 Memorial Cup game wins and 1 Memorial Cup Championship.
From 2002-05 he was the bench boss for the NY Rangers farm club in Hartford, 2005-09 the Head Coach of the Calgary Flames farm clubs in Ak-Sar & Quad City and an Assistant Coach with the NHL Flames from 2009-11.

Kootenay vs Calgary Exhibition Game #5
Crowsnest Pass, Alb – The Kootenay ICE scored 4 third period goals in a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Calgary Hitmen in WHL preseason action on Sunday afternoon.
The ICE scored the only goal of the first period with 16-year-old forward Kyle O’Connor getting his 2nd of the exhibition season.
The Hitmen scored 4 goals on 15 shots in the second period.
ICE forwards Brock Montgomery and Jaedon Descheneau each scored 2 goals in the third period.
Goalie Mackenzie Skapski preserved the win by stopping Jake Virtanen on a penalty shot with 5 ½ minutes left in the game.
Kootenay finishes the preseason with 2 wins and 3 losses.

Kootenay vs Lethbridge Exhibition Game #4
Crowsnest Pass, Alb – Kootenay ICE forward Sam Reinhart had 2 goals and 1 assist in a 5-4 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes in WHL preseason action on Friday night.
Colin Shirley (1g, 1a), Jagger Dirk (2a) and Jaedon Descheneau (2a) each had 2 point games.
The ICE opened the scoring early in the first period off a turnover in the Hurricanes zone and forward Douglas Morris scored his 1st goal of the preseason.
Lethbridge got 2 goals from Brady Ramsay, one on a powerplay and the other on a delayed penalty.
The ICE tied the game in the final minute on a powerplay as the puck took a weird bounce on a dump-in and Eric Benoit had an open net as he found the puck in the crease with the goalie was still behind the net. Benoit has 2 goals in the preseason and both are power-play goals.
In the second period the Hurricanes scored early to take a 3-2 lead and at one point they were outshooting the ICE 13-1.
The ICE tied the game midway through the period as Brock Montgomery stole the puck in the Hurricanes zone and fed Sam Reinhart in the slot who scored with a one-time shot.
Lethbridge switched goalies midway through the game with Tanner Kovacs replacing Christopher Tai.
Late in the period the ICE took a 4-3 lead on a goal mouth scramble with Collin Shirley pushing it across the line.
Reid Duke tied the game with 12 seconds left in the period.
Early in the third period the ICE got the winning goal with Sam Reinhart notching his 2nd of the game wit a powerplay redirection on a pass from Jaedon Descheneau.
The ICE will be at Western Financial Place Saturday morning from 9-11 as season ticket holders are invited for a pancake breakfast and to pick up their tickets.
The ICE will play their final exhibition game against Calgary in the Crowsnest Pass on Sunday afternoon at 2.

ICE Trade McKinlay
Cranbrook, BC -- Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the club has traded 20-year-old Forward Dylen McKinlay to the Kelowna Rockets in exchange for a conditional fifth round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. The ICE now have four 20-year-old players on their roster (Elgin Pearce, Drew Czerwonka, Brock Montgomery and Joey Leach).
“With us having five 20-year-old players on the roster we knew we had to reduce this number as soon as we could. With the abundance of 1992 born players in the League we wanted to ensure that Dylen had the opportunity to play his final season in the WHL. We would like to thank Dylen for his time with our Hockey Club and wish him all the best in Kelowna,” added Chynoweth

Kootenay vs Everett Exhibition Game #3
Kennewick, Wash – Kootenay ICE forward Luke Philp had 1 goal and 1 assist in a 3-2 loss to the Everett Silvertips in WHL preseason action on Saturday afternoon.
For the third game in a row the ICE gave up the first goal of the game but would tie it midway through the period on a shorthanded 2-on-1 break with Luke Philp picking the top far corner with his 3rd goal of the preseason and his 2nd short-handed goal.

Kootenay vs Portland Exhibition Game #2
Kennewick, Wash – Portland Winterhawks Ty Rattie had 1 goal and 3 assists in a 5-2 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL preseason action on Friday night.
Both ICE goals came on the power-play from Spencer Wand and Eric Benoit, while Wyatt Hoflin made 47 saves.
The ICE trailed 2-0 late in the first period when Spencer Wand scored a powerplay goal on the rush with a wrist shot that beat the goalie on the glove side.
At one point during the 2nd period the ICE were outshot 15-2 with their 2 shots on a 3-on-1 (Sam Reinhart shot) and a breakaway (Eric Benoit).
Also that period Wyatt Hoflin made 2 amazing saves in turning away Derrick Pouliot and Nic Petan.
ICE tied the game 2-2 on a powerplay deflection by Eric Benoit off a point shot by Matthew Thomas.

Tri City 6 Kootenay 3 Exhibition Game #1
Kennewick, Wash – The Tri City Americans scored 3 goals in less than 2 minutes in the second period on their way to a 6-3 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL preseason action on Thursday night.
Luke Philp had 2 goals and Jagger Dirk had 2 assists for the ICE who will play 3 games in 3 days in Tri City.
In a scoreless first period the ICE went down to 5 defenseman as Spencer Wand got involved in a fight. In the preseason there is an automatic game misconduct with fighting unless there is an instigator.
Jeff Hubic, who was playing at Right Wing to start the game, moved back to the blueline in the second period.
In the second period the Americans scored 3 goals in a 1:42 span to jump ahead 3-0.
Americans changed goalies midway through the period as Brenden Fiebelkorn replaced Eric Comrie.
While shorthanded Dylen McKinlay created a 2-on-1 break at the Tri City blueline and fed Luke Philp in the low slot for the goal.
The Ice were down 5-1 early in the third period and with the clubs’ skating 4-on-4 Luke Philp got his 2nd of the game with a bouncing redirection through the goalies’ legs.
The ICE created a turnover in the Americans’ zone and eventually Kyle O’Connor was alone in front of the net and scored with a backhand deke to make the score 5-3.
The Americans scored in the final minute to make the final 6-3.

Cranbrook, BC – The Kootenay ICE Hockey Club and The Drive 102.9 FM announced today they have agreed upon a new three year broadcasting agreement. The new agreement begins with the upcoming 2012-2013 season and will conclude at the end of the 2014-2015 campaign.
The agreement will continue with the same format as the past 12 years with all 72 regular season and playoff home and away games being broadcast live. Jeff Hollick will remain as the Play-By-Play voice of the ICE for the 14th consecutive season.

There are many individuals who are unable to attend our games and we are pleased to offer them the opportunity to stay connected with the team both at home and on the road with The Drive,” says ICE General Manager Jeff Chynoweth.

Intrasquad Game
Cranbrook, BC – Collin Shirley scored the winning goal late in the 3rd period and Wyatt Hoflin made 35 saves as Blue beat White 3-2 in the Kootenay ICE Intrasquad Game on Sunday afternoon.
Blue led 2-0 going into the 3rd period on goals by Luke Philp and Jakub Prochazka.
White tied the game with markers from Troy Murray and Zachary Zborosky.
Goalies Wyan Hoflin (35 saves) and Mackenzie Skapski (31 saves) went the distance for both clubs.
The ICE used mainly the younger players with no over-agers in the line-up and Eric Benoit was the only 19-year-old.
The game marked the conclusion of Training Camp with the club now preparing for its first preseason game on Thursday.
The cub has reduced their roster for the exhibition season and it will be announced later today or tomorrow.

Camp Observations
Here are some thoughts from training camp.
Keep in mind these are just my impressions and that I don’t have the eye for scouting like the excellent ICE management and staff.
Camp – For the second year in a row the club is going to have some very, very tough decisions on their final roster as there will be some prospects good enough to play in the WHL who will not make the club as there are not enough spots available.
Last Cuts 2011 – Luke Philp and Jesse Wood-Shatz were the last 2 cuts last year and are not assuming they have spots this year as they have been very impressive at camp.
Imports – Until you see them in person you are never sure what you get in the Import Draft but the ICE have to be happy with their 2 new forwards from the Czech Republic. Petr Vesely is a smaller type forward with great speed and is creative. Jakub Prochazka has good size and shot. Neither seems to be shying away from the physical game.
Overagers – I’m sure I’m not alone in guessing it’ll be Joey Leach and 2 forwards taking the 3 20-year-old spots. Drew Czerwonka is not skating at camp (injury) and the team has not announced his timeline yet. Czerwonka and Brock Montgomery both have the grit and offensive potential, Elgin Peace and Dylen McKinlay have the speed and skill. The ICE are in a good spot as they have luxury of keeping the players to fill the roles they need the most.
Goalies – Mackenzie Skapski has looked really sharp. Wyatt Hoflin is expected to make the club but both have to continue to earn their spots and not take anything for granted. It’ll be interesting to see if the ICE go with 2, 3 or 4 goalies in the preseason.
Defensemen – With 6 returning blueliners at camp there is a real battle for the final spot(s). 17-year-olds Tanner Faith, Kyle Krabben, Matthew Thomas and 16-year-olds Jake Dube, Jordan Steenbergen, Joseph Leonidas, Matthew Murray are some of the prospects that have been noticeable at times but there it feels like there are spots ready for the taking if someone wants it it.
Forwards – With 2 20-year old forwards and returnees Eric Benoit, Levi Cable, Sam Reinhart, Jon Martin and Jaedon Descheneau, means there will be 6 news faces this season. Summer acquisition Jordyn Boyd looks to be a good fit and when you add the 2 imports and the 2 last cuts from last year that equals only 1 open spot. Collin Shirley and Douglas Morris have been all over the scoresheets. Carter Sawicki and Ryley Risling could also get longer looks. 19-year-old Stefan Nicholishen dominated during the Prospects sessions against the much younger players and it’ll be interesting to see him against the veterans.
Unlisteds – Over the years there have been players make the team that were never selected in the Bantam Draft. Montogomery, Cable and Benoit are current examples while John Neibrandt and Luke Paulsen also earned spots at camp in recent years. ICE Camp Roster
The Kootenay ICE have 64 players on their training camp roster.
Here is a position-by-position breakdown.
The ICE do not make cuts during camp so these players are here all week.
After Sunday's Intrasquad Game the club will announce their preseason roster which I guess should be between 27-30 players.

Veterans Skate
The returning players had their first skate together today and it also included Jordyn Boyd (acquired during the summer from Everett), Petr Vesely (29th overall pick in the Import Draft), and Jakub Prochazka (59th pick in the Import Draft).
Other familar faces included Nathan Lieuwen, Brayden McNabb and Adam Cracknell.

Cranbrook, BC – The Kootenay ICE Hockey Club will open their 2012 Western Hockey League Training Camp Wednesday, August 29 at 9:15 am. This year’s Training Camp will once again combine rookie-aged players (players born in 1997), with veteran players (players born in 1992 to 1996). All ice sessions will take place at Western Financial Place.

Cranbrook, BC – Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced all proceeds from the 14th annual Blue-White Intrasquad Game will once again be donated to the Cranbrook and Kimberley United Way.
The Blue-White game will be played at Western Financial Place on Sunday, September 2 at 12:00 pm. The game will feature players who are competing to earn a spot on the 2012-2013 roster along with top draft choices.
“We are continuing with the tradition of partnering with charitable organizations within our community. Over the past 13 years almost $28,000.00 has been raised for the Cranbrook United Way through this event,” said Chynoweth.
The cost to attend the Blue-White game will be a minimum donation to the Cranbrook and Kimberley United Way of $5.00 per person.

Countdown To Camp
We always say in the Kootenays there are 2 seasons, Hockey Season and Waiting For Hockey Season and we are one weekend away from Kootenay ICE Training Camp.
The club is preparing for its 15th season in Cranbrook and they will follow a similar schedule as they will start on-ice sessions on Wednesday and will continue through the Labour Day long weekend.
The ICE will send out a press release on Monday with the camp schedule which will conclude with the Blue-White Charity Intrasquad Game.
Again this year we will have extensive coverage of the camp.
On The Drive/B-104 we will have daily reports from Western Financial Place (formerly the Rec-Plex).
There will be interview clips on the sportscasts.

Toronto – There has been much media speculation in the previous two days surrounding the attempted organization of our 1,300 players by an organization called the Canadian Hockey League Players’ Association.
To date, the league has not received any formal notification on the formation of this association or any intent to organize our players.
The CHL is comprised of the Western Hockey League, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and the Ontario Hockey League. The league is recognized as the number one player development league in the world for the NHL, Canada’s national teams and Canadian Interuniversity Sport hockey.
We are of the opinion that no junior hockey league in the world has made more changes to support the best interest of its players both on and off the ice as the CHL. This is evidenced by our drug education and anti-doping program, our concussion management program, numerous charitable programs and our Respect in Sport program as developed by Sheldon Kennedy in the area of player abuse.
In addition, the CHL provides North America’s best player scholarship program, funded through the league’s ownership.
Our league is comprised of 60 teams, all of which operate as individual corporate entities. Given this structure, any organization drive would be required to be at an individual team level.

The Canadian Hockey League is the world’s largest development hockey league with 52 Canadian and eight American teams participating in the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League. Knoblauch Back In Hockey

The last coach to lead a Kootenay Ice team to a league title is heading up highway 95A to help the Kimberley Dynamiters.
Kris Knoblauch is joining the Nitros coaching staff for the 2012-13 season and will help during all home games.
He says he's going to help in any way he can.
"I'm just a helper, I'll do what I'm told," Knoblauch says. "If they want me to work with the forwards, the defence or special teams, I'll do that. As of now, I'm not sure what my role is, I just want to help out Roman as much as possible."
As head coach, Knoblauch led the Kootenay Ice to the 2010-11 Ed Chynoweth Cup title and an appearance in the Memorial Cup.
Dynamiters President, Dave Smith says having both Roman Vopat and Kris Knoblauch on the coaching staff is a major advantage when it comes to recruiting players.
"To be able to put those two guys up onto our website and into our pamphlets that we hand out to recruit players is huge," Smith says. "Players are always looking to improve and they're not stupid. They know a coach with great experience and great success in the hockey world will do nothing but good for them."
Knoblauch is excited to work with former NHLer Roman Vopat who led the Nitros to a 34 point turnaround.

Stoll's Day With Cup

Stoll visited two separate rinks, held numerous public events, and ended with a banquet with about 1,100 guests. And all this was between two southeastern Saskatchewan towns -- Neudorf and Yorkton -- separated by about 50 miles. So it's pretty telling that Stoll's first stop of the day was to his grandparents' house.
In fact, Stoll's day with the Cup began with a big hug from his grandmother, Doreen, who hosted a brief party at her home in the morning, along with Stoll's grandfather, Wilbert. The pair has been a huge part of Jarret's upbringing, hosting the entire Stoll clan during holidays and attending many of their grandson's youth games. Before those games, the pair would promise to pay Jarret a dollar for every goal he scored, a proposal that got expensive as Jarret developed into a young hockey star. Jarret even picked his number, 28, because his grandfather was born in 1928.
In a day when hundreds of people shared in Jarret's celebration with the Cup, the Kings forward, who came one win short of a Cup win with the Edmonton Oilers in 2006, made sure to reserve plenty of time with family. There was a photo session featuring the Cup and Stoll's family at an area studio and a constant Stoll family presence throughout the day.
But it all started Thursday morning with a special visit to the home of Wilbert and Doreen Stoll.

Canada beat Finland 4-0 in the Gold Medal game to win the U-18 tournament.
Captain Sam Reinhart finished with 3 goals and 5 assists in 5 games played.
ICE Athletic Therapist Cory Cameron was also a part of Team Canada.

Cranbrook RecPlex Becomes
Western Financial Place
Cranbrook (BC), High River (AB), August 1, 2012 – The largest sports and entertainment venue in the Kootenays has a new name. Today, the Cranbrook RecPlex became Western Financial Place, in recognition of the facility’s new sponsor, Western Financial Group (Western).
Western—an insurance and financial services company based in Alberta—won naming rights for the next 10 years and plans to work with the City of Cranbrook, the facility operators, and the company’s regional partner, Falkins Insurance Group (Falkins), to build on the longstanding tradition of providing the residents of Cranbrook and surrounding areas a first-class destination for entertainment, recreation, and community involvement.
The 10-year partnership agreement, including naming rights and other sponsorship and usage commitments, totals $750,000, including an advance of $500,000.
“We’re delighted to make a commitment of this magnitude to the people of Cranbrook and the Kootenays,” said Western Financial Group CEO Scott Tannas. “Our company is rooted in the values that westerners cherish, and we intend to be a part of this terrific city and region for a long time to come.”
“We’re thrilled to have the support of Western and Falkins in this venture and in our community,” said Cranbrook Mayor, Wayne Stetski. “They’re only going to enhance what we can do with the building and bring to the people throughout our city and region.”
Director of Leisure Services, Chris New added, “Securing a naming rights holder is an important step in ensuring long term success for our operations. Not only does the agreement provide financial support, but the relationship with Western Financial Group will open up more opportunities to promote the facility, develop community activities, and secure additional special events for our region.”
The complex, which opened October 13, 2000, has a lap and wave pool, racquet ball/squash courts, an ice rink that’s home to the Kootenay Ice Western Hockey League team, and hosts world class events, such as the upcoming Bob Dylan concert.
Western Financial Place signage will be unveiled on the building and ice later this summer, and the Falkins Group will participate in sponsorship and branding opportunities throughout the building. As part of its succession plan, Falkins has begun the process of joining Western Financial Group.
“For nine years, we’ve been planning for the next phase of our 115 year old business, and we’re excited to be partnering with Western because they share our values and culture and know what’s important to people here in the west,” said Bob McGill, CEO, Falkins.
Stetski said, “Planning first started for a community recreation center back in 1993. Seven years and 5,000 signatures later, that dream became a reality. Today, we take another bold step forward by solidifying Western Financial Place as a premier destination for the people of Cranbrook and everyone throughout the Kootenays.”
