Kennewick, Wash – The Tri City Americans scored 3 goals in less than 2 minutes in the second period on their way to a 6-3 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL preseason action on Thursday night.
Luke Philp had 2 goals and Jagger Dirk had 2 assists for the ICE who will play 3 games in 3 days in Tri City.
In a scoreless first period the ICE went down to 5 defenseman as Spencer Wand got involved in a fight. In the preseason there is an automatic game misconduct with fighting unless there is an instigator.
Jeff Hubic, who was playing at Right Wing to start the game, moved back to the blueline in the second period.
In the second period the Americans scored 3 goals in a 1:42 span to jump ahead 3-0.
Americans changed goalies midway through the period as Brenden Fiebelkorn replaced Eric Comrie.
While shorthanded Dylen McKinlay created a 2-on-1 break at the Tri City blueline and fed Luke Philp in the low slot for the goal.
The Ice were down 5-1 early in the third period and with the clubs’ skating 4-on-4 Luke Philp got his 2nd of the game with a bouncing redirection through the goalies’ legs.
The ICE created a turnover in the Americans’ zone and eventually Kyle O’Connor was alone in front of the net and scored with a backhand deke to make the score 5-3.
The Americans scored in the final minute to make the final 6-3.
This was the first exhibition game for the ICE who will play Portland on Friday afternoon and Everett.
