Calgary, Alb – Calgary Hitmen forward Zane Jones had 2 goals in a 5-1 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Saturday night.
The ICE had a very strong first period but Calgary scored the only goal of the opening frame with Zane Jones alone near the crease and he scored after an unsuccessful wrap-around by Brady Brassart.
In the second period the Hitem took a 2-1 lead on a 2-on-1 break with Cody Sylvester scoring his 3rd of the year.
Late in the period Luke Philp scored with a wrist shot that beat the goalie high on the stick side. It’s Philp’s first goal of the year and 2nd of his career. Joey Leach had the assist and has points in both ICE games.
Early in the third period on a delayed penalty Calgary defenseman Darian Henry scored his 1st career goal on a redirection in the crease.
The Hitmen mad it 4-1 as Zane Jones notched his 2nd of the game on a pass from Brooks Macek.
Macek ended the scoring with a backhand wraparound late in the game.
Defenseman Kyle Krabben played in his first WHL game and became the first player to wear #28 in Franchise history.
Hitmen forward Jake Virtanen was the 1st overall selection in the 2011 Bantam Draft. He is the 2nd Hitmen to be selected 1st overall (Chris Nielsen 1995).
The ICE will play 12 of their next 13 and 15 of the next 18 game at home and will have their home opener against Regina on Friday.
