Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE goalie Nathan Lieuwen won a battle of the goalies in a 2-1 win over Luke Siemens and the Moose Jaw Warriors in WHL action on Saturday night.
The ICE (8-3-0-2) had a season high 18 shots on goal in the 1st period on the Warriors (6-5-1-0) who gave up 16 in the entire game Friday night in Red Deer.
The clubs didn’t score a goal in the 2nd period and marked the only time an ICE game this year that was scoreless after 2 periods.
Early in the third period of a faceoff win in the Warriors zone a point shot from John Neibrandt was stopped and Max Reinhart was near the crease to score on the rebound with a backhand shot.
The Warriors pulled their goalie with 1:06 left in the game only to have Drew Czerwonka block a play at his blue line and go all the other way for an empty net goal.
Moose Jaw pulled their goalie again and won a faceoff in the ICE zone, won a battle deep in the zone and fed Collin Bowman who scored with a slapshot on the blocker side.
The Warriors pulled the goalie for a third time but failed to get another scoring chance.
ICE will visit Calgary on Sunday afternoon.
