Travis Sanheim's tie-breaking goal 4:17 from the end of the third period helped the Calgary Hitmen past the Kootenay ICE 3-2 Sunday in Calgary.
The ICE, buoyed by a two-point effort from captain Sam Reinhart Sunday, will now face the Hitmen in the Eastern Conference quarter-final for the second consecutive season.
Kootenay opened the scoring early in the second period after winger Levi Cable found a rebound in front of the Calgary net and deposited his 28th goal of the season.
The Hitmen tied the game on a rebound of their own at 12:41 of the middle frame courtesy of Kenton Helgesen, as Calgary capitalized on the fourth of four consecutive man-advantage opportunities.
Hitmen forward Jordy Stallard, who scored the winner in a 2-1 Calgary win in Cranbrook Friday, gave the hosts the lead 1:43 into the third period Sunday off an odd-man rush. His goal was cancelled out minutes later by Reinhart, before Sanheim gave the Hitmen the lead for good at 15:43 of the final frame.
Calgary goaltender Brendan Burke made 23 saves for the victory, while ICE netminder Wyatt Hoflin stopped 25 shots.
UP NEXT: the ICE and Hitmen will meet in the first round of the WHL playoffs, which are set to begin Friday, March 27 at Scotiabank Saddledome.
