Cole Sanford scored the only goal of the game early in the first period as the Medicine Hat Tigers defeated the Kootenay ICE 1-0 Saturday at the Medicine Hat Arena.
Sanford took a breakaway feed from linemate Trevor Cox and put home his 48th goal of the season 3:36 into the opening frame.
Kootenay goaltender Wyatt Hoflin made 31 saves and was named second star, as the ICE were outshot 32-16 in the game. Tigers netminder Marek Langhamer recorded his second shutout of the season.
Kootenay (33-29-1-3) holds a one-point lead on the Edmonton Oil Kings for the first wild-card place in the Eastern Conference playoff standings. The ICE have six games remaining in the regular season.
Five of the last six games for Kootenay have been decided by one goal.
