ICE Recap

The Kootenay ICE season ended 2 months earlier than last season and today the players are having their exit meetings and will bring a close to 2011-12.
The first 27 games of the season the ICE were playing the style of hockey they did in the playoffs while most of the other teams will trying to find their identity.
On November 30th they were 19-5-1-2, on a 6-game winning streak.
The last 45 games they went 17-21-5-2 and failed to win more than 2 games in a row the rest of the season.
Including the playoffs they lost when they had a lead or were tied in the 3rd period in 25 games. I believe they earned 9 overtime points but that was a loss of a potential 41 other points. Remember, 1 more win and they finish 5th in the final standings and not 8th.
In trying to figure out what happened ... mistakes, bad luck, bad penalties, rookies learning, leadership, goaltending, etc, the confusing part is why they were great for 2 periods and not the 3rd.
In being the defending champions and just being the Kootenay ICE they always have to face an opposition who were geared up to play them and the ICE never had an easy night.

We will hear in the coming days where some players will still be playing this season.
Nathan Lieuwen, Joey Leach and Drew Czerwonka are NHL drafted but unsigned. At the very least they could sign Amateur Try Out contracts and play pro hockey.
Max Reinhart is signed and could be in Abbotsford for the rest of the season and even play for Calgary.
Joe Antilla and Jesse Ismond could also have pro options or decide on their future over the summer.
Sam Reinhart should be receiving consideration to play of Canada at the Under-18 tournament April 12-22. The event is mainly for 17 year-olds but the 16-year-old is still eligible. The Head Coach is Red Deer's Jesse Wallin.

The ICE had 8 rookies this season (4 17-year olds, 4 16-year olds) and could have 7 1st year players next season, one or two of them could be import players.
They had 8 19-year-olds and only 3 can return as over-agers next season.
Max Reinhart is gone.
The status of Czerwonka and Leach will be big factors in the final decisions.
Luke Paulsen, John Neibrandt, Elgin Pearce, Dylen McKinlay and Brock Montgomery are the other options.

The ICE are coming off 2 great Bantam Drafts and are a couple of years away from being a major contender and it's going to be an exciting training camp.
The players on the list of potential new players are (listed in no particular order) ...
Goalie - Wyatt Hoflin (17)
Defense - Tanner Faith (17), Kyle Krabben (17), Jordan Steenbergen (16), Matthew Murray (16), Carter Forsyth (16)
Forward - Luke Philp (17), Jesse Wood-Shatz (17), Jakson Elynuik (17), Doug Morris (17), Ian Williams (17), Zachary Zborosky (16), Collin Shirley (16), Kyle O'Connor (16)

Leach Playoff MVP

Defenseman Joey Leach has been named the Top Playoff Performer for the 2012 WHL Playoffs.
Despite the series loss to Edmonton Joey's play throughout the four games was consistent. He was a physical force on the ice and gave strong leadership to the team.

Edmonton 3 Kootenay 1 Playoff Game #4

Cranbrook, BC – Edmonton Oil Kings Rhett Rachinski scored 2 goals in a 3-1 win over the Kootenay ICE, to win the series 4-0, in WHL playoff action on Thursday night.

The Oil Kings opened the scoring early in the first period on the powerplay as Mark Pysyk’s point shot was stopped by the goalie, the puck went high in the air and landed near the goal line and was pushed into the net by the goalies’ pad.

In the second period the ICE scored their first powerplay goal of the series with Drew Czerwonka coming down the left wing with a wrist shot that beat the goalie of the glove side.
The Oil Kings regained the lead as Rhett Rachinski’s attempted pass from the corner went off an ICE player into the net.

Rhett Rachinski added an empty net goal to clinch the game and the series.

It’s the third time the ICE have been swept in the 1st round of the playoffs (09 vs Brandon, 04 vs Kelowna) and the 5th time they lost 4 playoff games in a row.

The ICE had 12 players on the roster this season that won the WHL Championship last year.
The club had 8 rookies during the season and will have at least 7 rookies next year, in what will probably make making them the youngest team in the WHL.

The two home games for the ICE were the smallest crowds in playoff history in games played at the Rec-Plex. 2,293 for game 3 and 2,146 for game 4.

ICE Scratches – Spencer Wand (1 game suspension for warm-up violation in game 3), Luke Paulsen, Max Reinhart (1 game suspension for game misconduct in game 3).
Oil Kings Scratches – Klarc Wilson, Cole Benson, Ryan Dech, Mason Geertsen, Tristan Sieben.

Day Off Thoughts

The series between the ICE and Oil Kings will resume on Wednesday and Thursday at the Rec-Plex.
The series has seen each team take a 1-goal lead into the 3rd period, the Oil Kings added to their lead to win game 1 and came from behind to win game 2.
Including the regular season and playoffs, 24 times the ICE have had the lead or tied in the 3rd period and have lost the game.
During the current 7 game losing streak it has happened 5 times.
It's the strangest stretch of games I have ever seen, with goals going in off legs, arms and ICE players into their net.
In their history the ICE have trailed 2-0 5 times and came back to win the series twice. But they have never won a series when losing the first 2 games on the road (0-3).
As expected, for the ICE to win the series they need everyone playing their best.
The ICE powerplay is 0-for-8 in the series but did score a goal exactly when a penalty ended in game 2.
Both teams have had scoring chances while shorthanded.
How much depth do the Oil Kings have on forward? 20-year-old forwards Jordan Peddle and Rhett Rachinksi have played on their 3rd and 4th lines.
Henrik Samuelsson has sat out a 2-game suspension and a pretty good player will have to sit out to make room for him in the line-up.
Some really positive articles have been in the Edmonton newspapers during the series. Most of the information is old news to the fans in the Kootenays but is a great update for the people in Edmonton who saw the ICE leave 14 years ago. Over the years some media can't wait to be negative about Cranbrook and the challenges the ICE have to go through in a small market, so it's refreshing to see the whole truth revealed.

Day Off Thoughts

The ICE and Oil Kings series will continue Sunday afternoon with game 2 of their 1st round series as the Rexall Place is being used for an Edmonton Rush Lacrosse game.
Saturday afternoon the ICE practiced at the home of the NAIT Ooks.

Steele Boomer, a member of last years Championship team, is attending NAIT to become a pilot.
The Ooks hockey team lost last night 3-2 in double overtime to the Augustana Vikings in Game 4 of the ACAC Championship. The Vikings won the series 3-1. The Ooks win Silver medal.

The ICE had a record of 16-3 in last year playoff run and 2 of the 3 losses were shutouts.
The ICE were shutout twice last year in the 1st round to Moose Jaw.
Last night was the 7th time the ICE have been shutout in a playoff game.

It was a frustrating loss as all 3 Edmonton goals came right after the ICE had their best scoring chances. That has been the story in almost all of the 7 head-to-head meetings this year.

How many of you were at the Rec-Plex on March 13, 2010 when Laurent Brossoit made his 1st WHL start and 3rd WHL appearance in Kootenay and made 49 saves in a 2-1 los to the ICE?

As mentioned on the broadcast, one of the keys to the series is the Oil Kings group of mobile defensemen. They have 3 NHL drafted Dmen, Pysyk 1st round, Lowe 3rd round and Gernat 5th round. Plus Reinhart with be a top 10 pick this year, Sautner will be at least a 3rd round pick this year and the talk is Corbett and Geertsen will be solid picks in 2013. This looks like the Kelowna Rockets during their stretch of Championships. Maybe the only negative for this year is they are mostly 17 and 18 year olds.

There are no injury reports in the playoffs so unless a team reveals why a player is not playing it's best not to believe any unconfirmed reports. Even during the regular season there were many wrong reports as some tried to guess at the upper body or lower body injuries. When it comes to injuries it's best to report "unknown" than to get the wrong message sent to the public.

Which team is happier to have a day off between games?
