Medicine Hat 5 Kootenay 4 SO

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-edged-in-medicine-hat-shootout
Trevor Cox scored the shootout winner as the Medicine Hat Tigers edged the Kootenay ICE 5-4 Tuesday.

Cox, the reigning Canadian Hockey League Player of the Week, broke a 1-1 tie in the shootout as Medicine Hat completed multiple comebacks to collect the victory on home ice.

The ICE held a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play, opening the scoring 8:44 into the opening frame on a quick snapshot from Jaedon Descheneau. It was the St. Louis Blues prospect's 20th goal of the season.

Kootenay's Tyler King rifled home a power-play marker with 1:07 remaining in the period to double the ICE lead.

The Tigers answered back quickly in the second period. First, defenseman Kyle Becker tucked home a goal from close range 1:28 into the frame before Cole Sanford tied the game at 2-2 on a power-play a minute later.

The Kootenay offense continued to click, with Philp burying his 16th goal of the season 2:03 after Sanford's equalizer.

Medicine Hat found another tying goal on a late power-play, again through Becker, who scored his tenth goal of the season. The ICE reclaimed the lead before the period was out, though, as Philp put home his second goal of the period on a nifty passing play with Descheneau and Tim Bozon.

Medicine Hat tied the game at 4-4 at the midway mark of the third period on a Matt Staples point shot that found its way through traffic past ICE goaltender Wyatt Hoflin.

The ICE killed three straight penalties in the last half of the third period, and were awarded a penalty shot when Descheneau was impeded on a partial break, but the 19 year-old shot high on Tigers netminder Marek Langhamer.

Neither side was able to score in overtime, with Langhamer making 38 saves through 65 minutes of play as Kootenay outshot Medicine Hat 41-30.

Sanford opened the scoring in the shootout, but his goal was quickly cancelled out by Bozon. Cox's goal in the fourth round of the breakaway competition secured the win for the Tigers after Philp was stopped by Langhamer on Kootenay's final attempt.

Philp and Descheneau each finished with four points. First-year defenseman Cale Fleury also chipped in with an assist.

Hoflin set a new franchise record with his 26th consecutive appearance, breaking a mark set five years ago by Todd Mathews.

Descheneau and Bozon both extended point streaks to six games Tuesday.

The ICE finished 1-4 on the power play, while Medicine Hat scored two man-advantage goals on eight opportunities.

UP NEXT: the ICE ring in 2015 with a matchup in Red Deer Friday, January 2nd. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Kootenay 4 Calgary 3

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-sweep-home-and-home-with-hitmen
Wyatt Hoflin made 34 saves, and four different ICE players found the back of the net as Kootenay defeated the Calgary Hitmen 4-3 Sunday at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Hoflin matched a franchise record by appearing in his 25th consecutive game, while the ICE enjoyed three separate two-goal leads in collecting their fifth straight victory, and second in as many days against the Hitmen.

Kootenay opened the scoring just past the midway mark of the first period on a power play when Zak Zborosky snapped a wrist shot past Calgary netminder Mack Shields.

Jon Martin added a second ICE goal 45 seconds later before Adam Tambellini brought the hosts back to within a goal before the first period was complete.

Kootenay increased its lead to 3-1 1:25 into the second period thanks to Levi Cable, who spun a shot past Shields for his fifth goal, and seventh point, of the weekend.

The Hitmen cut the ICE advantage in half on a power-play at 12:15 when Kenton Helgesen deflected Ben Thomas' point shot past Hoflin for his 11th goal of the season.

Kootenay forward Luke Philp put the ICE back up by two goals three minutes later, becoming the third ICE player to reach the 15-goal mark this season.

Tambellini fired home his second goal of the game with 50 seconds remaining in the middle frame while short-handed, making the score 4-3 in favour of Kootenay after 40 minutes.

Calgary outshot the ICE 9-4 in the third period, but could not solve Hoflin as the Kootenay goaltender collected his 20th victory of the season. Hoflin stood as the WHL leader in both minutes played and saves entering play Sunday.

ICE forwards Zborosky, Jaedon Descheneau and Tim Bozon each extended their point streaks to five games Sunday. Descheneau has recorded points in 17 of his last 18 games.

Shields stopped 14 of 18 Kootenay shots and was assessed the loss in goal for the Hitmen. He was replaced by Evan Johnson late in the second period.

Both teams were 1-3 on the power play.

UP NEXT: the ICE continues its four-game road swing Tuesday in Medicine Hat. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Kootenay 6 Calgary 2

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/four-goal-effort-from-cable-pushes-ice-past-hitmen

Levi Cable scored four times, and Wyatt Hoflin made 51 saves as the Kootenay ICE started their post-holiday schedule with a 6-2 victory over Calgary Saturday at Western Financial Place.

The ICE raced out to a 4-0 lead through 40 minutes thanks in part to Cable's natural hat-trick, and took the first of a home-and-home set with the division rival Hitmen.

Cable got things going for Kootenay just shy of the four-minute mark with his 12th goal of the year, adding a second on an unassisted effort with 1:37 remaining in the opening frame to put the ICE ahead 2-0 after 20 minutes.

The Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan product found his hat-trick 3:10 into period two, as Cable took advantage of a turnover by Calgary netminder Mack Shields in the Hitmen zone, cutting to the net unabated to tuck home Kootenay's third goal.

Luke Philp banged home a rebound 98 seconds later to put the ICE ahead by four, chasing Shields in the process.

Kootenay started period three on a power-play, with Cable again finding the mark just 14 seconds into proceedings. His 15th goal of the year set a new personal best.

The Hitmen fired 24 shots at Hoflin in the third period though, and found the back of the net on a power-play of their own through Russian import Pavel Karnaukhov at 6:20. The shifty centre added an assist just under two minutes later, setting up defenseman Micheal Zipp on an odd-man rush to cut the ICE lead to 5-2.

Kootenay's leading scorer, Jaedon Descheneau, rounded out the scoring on a breakaway with just under five minutes left, collecting a bounce-pass from Philp before beating Calgary relief goaltender Evan Johnson for his 19th goal of the season.

Hoflin, making his 24th consecutive appearance in goal, set a new career best with his 51-save performance, while Cable finished the evening with five points.

Philp, Descheneau, and Tim Bozon each chipped in with multi-point efforts for the ICE, who won its fourth consecutive game and improved to 13-6-0-0 at Western Financial Place.

UP NEXT: Kootenay plays its next four games away from home against Central Division opponents beginning Sunday in Calgary. Game time is 4:00 pm.

Kootenay 5 Kamloops 2

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-upend-blazers-tuesday

Two goals in a 53-second span in the third period helped the Kootenay ICE to a 5-2 victory over the Kamloops Blazers Tuesday at Western Financial Place.

Tyler King put home the eventual game-winner 8:02 into the third period, while Jaedon Descheneau and Rinat Valiev each chipped in with a goal and an assist as the ICE won for the 15th time in its last 19 outings.

Kootenay opened the scoring late in the first period thanks to Valiev, who powered his fifth goal of the season past Kamloops goaltender Connor Ingram just over a minute after Descheneau struck the crossbar on a penalty shot.

The Blazers outshot the ICE 13-5 in period one, and found the back of the net 4:35 into the second period on a wrist shot from former Kootenay forward Collin Shirley. Kamloops went ahead on a power-play seven minutes later when again, Shirley capitalized on a loose puck at the side of the Kootenay net.

Descheneau tied the game at 2-2 with 4:55 remaining in the middle frame with his team-leading 18th goal of the season.

The two teams stayed at level pegging until King's go-ahead marker. The 19 year-old defenseman snuck toward the net from the right point, collecting a cross-ice pass from Descheneau to score his fourth goal of the campaign.

Former Blazer Tim Bozon added to Kootenay's lead within a minute, snapping a rebound over Ingram's left shoulder.

Ryan Chynoweth rounded out the scoring with 6:38 to play, collecting his second goal in as many games.

Hoflin stopped 30 Kamloops shots, while Ingram made 22 saves in the Blazer net.

UP NEXT: the ICE break for the holidays until December 27th, when they host the Calgary Hitmen at Western Financial Place. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Kootenay 6 Edmonton 3

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-double-oil-kings-saturday
Matt Alfaro's goal 8:01 into the third period broke a 3-3 tie and propelled the Kootenay ICE to a 6-3 victory over Edmonton Saturday at Western Financial Place.

Alfaro was one of five ICE skaters to finish with multi-point games, while Wyatt Hoflin turned aside 24 shots in his 22nd consecutive start as the ICE won its second game in as many nights.

Kootenay opened the scoring just before the four-minute mark when, on a power-play leading scorer Jaedon Descheneau re-directed a point shot over the shoulder of Oil Kings goaltender Tristan Jarry for his 17th goal of the season.

Defenseman Tyler King added a second marker for the home side before Brandon Baddock answered for Edmonton with 3:22 remaining in the opening frame. The ICE took a 2-1 lead into the break.

Kootenay forward Zak Zborosky scored twice in Friday's win over Prince Albert, and extended the ICE lead Saturday with another tally 3:42 into the second period. The Regina product snapped a shot from the high slot that caromed into the net off Jarry's shoulder.

The Oil Kings responded again though early in the third period. Blake Orban rifled home a shot 25 seconds into the frame from the right-wing circle to cut the ICE lead to 3-2.

Forward Brandon Ralph put Edmonton even just over five minutes later, tucking a rebound past Hoflin's right pad after linemate Tyler Robertson's shot was saved.

Kootenay fired 12 shots at the Oil Kings goal in period three, but went ahead after a miscue behind the Edmonton net. Zborosky stripped Jarry of the puck, then quickly fed Alfaro who fired a shot into the vacated cage.

Defenseman Bryan Allbee added an insurance marker with 3:33 remaining before Ryan Chynoweth rounded out the scoring into the empty net with 35 seconds left.

The ICE improved its record when opening the scoring at home to 8-0-0-0 this season.

Kootenay went 1-3 on the power play, while Edmonton finished 0-3 with the man-advantage.

UP NEXT: Kootenay wraps up its pre-holiday portion of the 2014-15 schedule Tuesday with a home date against the Kamloops Blazers. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Kootenay 3 Prince Albert 2 OT

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/zborosky-nets-pair-ice-win-in-ot
\
Zak Zborosky scored twice, including the game-winner with 56 seconds remaining in overtime as the Kootenay ICE defeated the Prince Albert Raiders 3-2 Friday at Western Financial Place.

Zborosky fired a wrist shot from the high slot after linemate Matt Alfaro dispossessed a Raider defenseman to give Kootenay its sixth extra-time win in as many tries this season.

The ICE jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when, on a Kootenay power-play Luke Philp tucked home his 13th goal of the campaign after a nifty setup from linemate Jaedon Descheneau.

Prince Albert, playing its sixth game in a seven-game road trip, responded before the opening frame was out. The Raiders tied the game just before the midpoint of period one when the puck caromed into the Kootenay goal off forward Darcy Zaharichuk, before Simon Stransky put the visitors ahead 1:04 later.

The ICE had nine power-plays Friday, and were able to equalize in the second period thanks to Zborosky 12:53 into the second period.

Kootenay appeared to take the lead five minutes later on a two-man advantage when Tim Bozon wired a Descheneau pass goalward, but video review confirmed the puck did not cross the goalline behind Raider netminder Rylan Parenteau.

The two sides combined for only 12 shots on goal in period three, and the ICE came close to winning early in overtime when Descheneau was sent in alone, but his snap shot was deflected over the net by Parenteau's left arm.

Zborosky's second marker proved decisive, however, as the 18 year-old's shot changed direction on its way through heavy traffic in front of Parenteau.

Kootenay has now scored a power-play goal in 11 of its last 13 games, while Zborosky recorded his first career multi-goal game and first overtime winning goal. The ICE are now 5-0 in overtime and 1-0 in shootouts this season.

Descheneau's first period assist was the 133rd of his career, moving him past Steve DaSilva into sixth all-time in franchise history.

UP NEXT: the ICE host the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday (7:00, Western Financial Place) before concluding the pre-holiday portion of the schedule Tuesday at home versus Kamloops.

Medicine Hat 4 Kootenay 1

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/tigers-stifle-ice-tuesday
Two goals in a ten-second span, and a 26-save performance from Marek Langhamer helped the Medicine Hat Tigers defeat the Kootenay ICE 4-1 Tuesday at Western Financial Place.

Chad Labelle broke a 1-1 tie at 8:21 of the third period before Cole Sanford and Trevor Cox added insurance markers as the Tigers handed the ICE its second straight setback.

Both teams enjoyed chances through a scoreless first period, with Kootenay holding a 10-9 edge in shots on goal through 20 minutes.

Medicine Hat who opened the scoring 4:34 into the middle frame on a power-play. Defenseman Tyler Lewington snuck towards the net from the right point before receiving a cross-ice pass to set up his fifth goal of the season from just outside ICE goaltender Wyatt Hoflin's crease.

The home side pressured Langhamer, with the Tigers netminder making several clutch saves including a sprawling stop on Jaedon Descheneau from point-blank range. Kootenay found an equalizer with 18 seconds left in the period after Levi Cable was sent in alone on Langhamer, scoring his 11th goal of the season.

The visitors capitalized in quick succession just before the midway mark of period three. After Labelle sent a wrist shot into the goal for his third tally of the season, Cole Sanford found the back of the net ten seconds later to put Medicine Hat up 3-1.

Cox scored into an empty net with 2:05 left on the clock to round out the scoring.

Langhamer collected his second victory of the season, while Hoflin made 34 saves for the ICE.

Kootenay captain Sam Reinhart was held without a point for the first time this season ending a 14-game scoring streak, while Descheneau's 13-game streak also ended Tuesday.

The visiting team has won each of the three meetings between the Tigers and ICE this season.

Tri City 5 Kootenay 4

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-rally-falls-short-sunday
Four second-period goals paced the Tri-City Americans to a 5-4 win over the Kootenay ICE in Kennewick, Washington Sunday.

Americans forwards Beau McCue and Parker Bowles each had four points, while a late rally from the ICE fell just short despite a two-goal effort from Tim Bozon.

Kootenay, winners of 12 of its last 14 games, jumped out to an early lead through Bozon, who scored a power-play goal at 12:30 of the first period. The 20 year-old opened the scoring for the second consecutive night, but his tally was quickly cancelled out by Bowles as the two teams headed to the first intermission tied 1-1.

The Americans scored three times in the first 6:07 of period two, with McCue and Bowles setting up Richard Nejezchleb and Brandon Carlo before McCue found the back of the net with a short-handed marker to make the scoreline 4-1 Tri-City.

The ICE replied three minutes later through Austin Vetterl, but the hosts reclaimed their three-goal lead before the second period was out on defenseman Riley Hillis' first career WHL goal.

Bozon started the third period off with a bang for Kootenay, putting home a short-handed goal of his own just ten seconds into the frame.

Luke Philp added a power-play goal off a feed from defenseman Rinat Valiev at the 5:35 mark to cut Tri-City's lead to 5-4.

The ICE fired 17 shots at Americans netminder Eric Comrie in the third period, but the Team Canada World Junior goaltender turned aside everything he faced following Philp's goal as Tri-City denied Kootenay a three-game weekend sweep.

Wyatt Hoflin made 16 saves before being relieved by rookie Keelan Williams, who stopped all five shots sent his way in the third period.

Sam Reinhart extended his point streak to 14 games with a third-period assist, while Jaedon Descheneau's two helpers enabled him to up his point streak to 13 games.

Valiev led all ICE scorers with three assists.

UP NEXT: Kootenay will play its next five games on home ice, beginning Tuesday against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Kootenay 3 Spokane 2

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-slip-past-chiefs-saturday
Levi Cable's game-winner seven minutes into the third period helped the Kootenay ICE to a fourth consecutive win, 3-2 over the Spokane Chiefs Saturday in Washington state.

Cable jammed home a loose puck in front of the Spokane goal to break a 2-2 tie as the ICE won its 13th game in the last 15 outings.

Kootenay started brightly Saturday, going ahead 2-0 inside the first four minutes of the game on goals from Tim Bozon and Sam Reinhart. The Chiefs replied before the end of the opening frame on a two-man advantage thanks to captain Jason Fram.

Fram, who scored all three of Spokane's goals in the weekend home-and-home set, added a second tally Saturday late in the second period to send the two teams to the intermission knotted at 2-2.

Cable became the fourth ICE skater (Jaedon Descheneau, Luke Philp and Bozon) to reach 10 goals this season with his third-period winner.

Wyatt Hoflin made 34 saves to record his 15th win of the season, while Tyson Verhelst stopped 22 of 23 shots in relief of Spokane starter Garret Hughson.

Reinhart extended his point streak to 13 games while Descheneau now has at least a point in 12 consecutive games. Bozon's goal helped him up his point streak to six games.

Zak Zborosky also had two assists for Kootenay.

Kootenay 2 Spokane 1

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/early-goal-helps-ice-to-teddy-bear-toss-win

Sam Reinhart broke a 1-1 tie 5:39 into the third period as the Kootenay ICE edged the Spokane Chiefs 2-1 in Cranbrook Friday.

It was Jaedon Descheneau's goal 41 seconds into the game, though, that sent hundreds of teddy bears, toques and mittens flying from the stands as the ICE won for the 11th time in 13 tries on A&W Teddy Bear Toss Night.

Descheneau started the game off with a bang igniting the crowd on the opening shift by scoring his team-leading 16th goal of the season on an odd-man rush. The 19 year-old accepted a pass from linemate Luke Philp, then snapped the puck past Chiefs netminder Garret Hughson in the opening minute of the first period.

Spokane outshot its hosts 32-21 Friday, including a 14-7 advantage in the opening frame, but could not solve Kootenay goaltender Wyatt Hoflin until the final minute of the second period. Chiefs captain Jason Fram put home his fourth goal of the season to put the two sides on level terms after 40 minutes.

Reinhart extended his point streak to twelve games with his third period winner. The ICE captain has recorded at least one point in each of his appearances with the club this season.

Hoflin, meanwhile, shut the door on Spokane in the third period, turning aside all eight shots he faced to preserve the victory. Hughson made 19 saves for Spokane Friday.

Descheneau, who was named the club's Player of the Month for November Friday, upped his point streak to eleven games, while Philp has now put up a point or more in his last six outings.

Kootenay has scored a power-play goal in each of its last nine contests.

UP NEXT: the ICE and Chiefs meet again Saturday in Spokane (8:05 PM, Spokane Arena) before Kootenay wraps up the weekend Sunday at Tri-City.

Kootenay 4 Everett 3 OT

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-complete-comeback-in-everett
Tyler King played overtime hero as the Kootenay ICE completed a wild comeback to stun the Everett Silvertips 4-3 Sunday at Xfinity Arena.

Kootenay trailed 3-0 after 40 minutes, but four unanswered goals helped the ICE finish their West Coast swing with a winning record, and a 10-2-0-0 overall mark in the month of November.

Kootenay, fresh off a comeback victory Saturday at Seattle, fell behind 6:42 into the second period Sunday, as Montreal Canadiens first-rounder Nikita Scherbak scored his 12th goal of the season.

Patrick Bajkov and Carson Stadnyk added further offense for the Silvertips, who outshot the ICE 19-14 through two periods.

But Kootenay, playing its third game in as many days, found their spark in period three.

First, Tim Bozon fired home his ninth goal of the season at 1:35 to put the ICE on the board, before fellow import Rinat Valiev capitalized on a Kootenay power play five minutes later to cut the ICE deficit to 3-2.

Defenseman Tanner Faith, who returned to action Friday in Portland after missing nine games with an injury, forced overtime with 6:08 left to play in the third period, scoring his first goal of the season.

Kootenay had not lost in four trips to to overtime entering play Sunday, and kept their winning streak intact when King put home his second goal of the season 3:08 into extra time, completing the comeback. It was King's second career overtime winner, and first as a member of the ICE.

Wyatt Hoflin stopped 19 shots in goal to record his 13th victory of the season, while rookie Carter Hart made 26 saves for Everett.

Bozon reached 250 career WHL points Sunday, assisting on King's game-winner. Forwards Sam Reinhart and Jaedon Descheneau upped their point streaks to 11 and ten games, respectively.

Kootenay went 1/2 on the power play Sunday, marking eight consecutive games in which the ICE have scored a power play goal.

UP NEXT: the ICE return home to host the Spokane Chiefs Friday, December 5th, on A&W Teddy Bear, Toque and Mitten Toss Night. Bring your gently used teddy bears, toques and mittens to the game, and throw them on the ice when the ICE scores its first goal. Game time is 7:00 pm at Western Financial Place.
