DaSilva Helps Beat Canada

http://www.tsn.ca/world_jrs/story/?id=302492

REGINA -- Steven DaSilva scored twice in the third period as the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Saskatchewan All-Stars upset the Canadian junior team 4-2 in exhibition play Tuesday night before 3,329 at Brandt Arena.

Chris Durand had a goal and two assists and Brennan Bosch also scored for the CIS.

Philippe Cornet of Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and defenceman Dylan Olsen of the University of Minnesota-Duluth scored for Canada, who outshot the students 38-23 but were stoned by their own goaltenders, who played for both teams.

After two intrasquad games earlier this week, it was the last chance for the juniors to impress the coaches and management before the 22-man team roster for the world junior championships is announced on Wednesday, but few stood out in this contest.

They rested eight of the 31 players remaining in camp -- all of them strong bets to make the squad.

The CIS team was made up of players from the universities of Regina and Saskatchewan, most of them former Western Hockey League players, and gave the juniors a test with their experience and energy.

Also, Team Canada goalies Matt Hackett of the Plymouth Whalers, Olivier Roy of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and Martin Jones of the Calgary Hitmen each played two periods one for each team -- and took turns frustrating their teammates.

Canada looked to be in control until running into penalty trouble in the third period.

Only seven seconds into a holding call on Cody Eakin of the Swift Current Broncos, DaSilva one-timed a pass from the slot past Roy to put the CIS in the lead at 7:35.

DaSilva got behind the defence and beat Roy with a high shot to seal the victory with 2:34 left to play.

The students scored first, as Durand's shot from the right side of the net slid under Hackett 8:36 into the game. Meanwhile, Roy stoned his teammates in the net, stopping Nazem Kadri of the London Knights on a breakaway in the final minute of the period.

Canada outshot the CIS 14-1 in the second frame, but the students scored on their only shot as Bosch got a return pass from Steve Gillen and banged it past Jones at 6:28.

Canada struck back 44 seconds later as Cornet was at the net to backhand the rebound of a Tyler Cuma shot past Hackett. Olsen tied it at 14:42 when he got a piece of Windsor Spitfire Taylor Hall's pass and it ducked inside Hackett's far post.

The juniors played with desperation but no finish in the third period. There were blazing rushes from Hall and Brandon Kozun of the Hitmen, and Adam Henrique of Windsor got in alone only to shoot over the net.

Defenceman Colten Teubert was the only one of six returning players from last year's world juniors to dress, and he was named captain for the game.

Skapski Update

There has been no official release but there are many reliable sources reporting that ICE prospect Mackenzie Skapski was the player who most seriously hurt in the bus accident on the weekend.

Greg Drinnan (Taking Note Link to the right) has this on his blog today.

G Mackenzie Skapski of the major midget Fraser Valley Bruins is in B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, recovering from surgery to repair head injuries suffered in a bus accident Friday afternoon near Williams Lake, B.C. Skapski, from Abbotsford, B.C., was taken by the Kootenay Ice in the third round, 57th overall, of the 2009 bantam draft. He played last season with the Abbotsford Hawks, who won the B.C. bantam championship. . . . Skapski was released from ICU on Sunday and now is recovering in his own room. Calgary 3 Kootenay 1 Game #33

Cranbrook, BC – Calgary goalie Martin Jones made 24 saves and got help with 4 goal posts in a 3-1 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Friday night.

The 1st goal of the game came late in the 2nd period as Brandon Kozun batted in a high rebound. The puck was ruled a legal goal by the referee. Video replay was used but the camera over the net couldn't give the angle to overrule the call.
The referees did not have access to another camera view which showed it was a high stick and shouldn't have been a goal.

ICE tied the score 1-1 as Jesse Ismond wristed a shot from the middle slot that beat Jones low on the glove side. It was the goal that sent over 2,300 donations onto the ice surface on Teddy Bear and Mitten toss night.

Calgary got the game winner on the powerplay as Kris Foucault’s wrist shot glanced on the goal post and beat the screened goalie.
The ICE were on a power-play while trailing 2-1 and Calgary's Michael Stone was in his own zone and shot the puck into the crowd over the ICE players' bench. One referee looked like he was going to call the delay of game penalty to give the ICE a 2-man advantage for 1 minute. The officials then ruled that it was defelcted off an ICE stick. After the game the ICE viewed the replay and the ICE players' stick was on the other side of the Hitmen players' stick and couldn't have deflected the puck out of play.
Hitmen got insurance as defenseman Kyle Aschim scored his 1st career goal with a long wrist shot that beat the screened goalie high on the glove side.

ICE scratches – Dominik Pacovsky 8th game (ankle 2-4 weeks), Luke Paulsen & Elgin Pearce.

Calgary forward Brandon Kozun (WHL scoring leader) and goalie Martin Jones will now leave the club to attend Canada’s WJHC camp.

The ICE will visit Calgary on Sunday.

Hockeyville

You may have heard the interviews on the radio stations this week about getting Cranbrook to be named this years' Hockeyville winner. Here is an update from Colin Campbell who is helping to lead the way ...

There are only 39 days left to support the nomination, the website address is www.cbc.ca/hockeyville At the moment we are in fourth place in our region with 18 articles, however Hazelton in first place has 228 articles in support. Without your help this nomination is not going to make it to phase two. There are two communities from each of the four regions and one wild card to make the wild card we need to be third, to guarantee the nomination we need to be first.

This is not about winning first prize, its not about hockey, It is about community pride, about being excited about Cranbrook, what it is and where it’s going. We have so much to be thankful for here and we need to take the time to write it down on the website and let the country know that we are proud of our community and if we win the first prize we will spend the money to improve our arenas and to help make it an even better community.

I can’t do this alone, you need to pitch in, forward this to your friends, go to the website and write a paragraph in support, join facebook and twitter and become a fan of Hockeyville.

I know some of you are not from Cranbrook, so why not go to Hockeyville and nominate your community too? It’s free, I’ll support your nomination as well. Let’s all show the country that we have pride in our nation and in our achievers, be they hockey players, skiers, writers, musicians and everyone else.

Thanks for your support.

Matt Fraser & Denny’s ‘Shoot for the Star’ Exceeds $10,000

Cranbrook, BC… East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s Starlite Campaign for Excellence in Health Care is pleased to announce the lighting of its 9th star at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.

The cold weather isn’t affecting the warm hearts of givers who have helped light this current star. Those same people are also stepping up to move a dream forward for Matt Fraser of the Kootenay ICE.

The enthusiastic “Fraz” as he is known, decided to show support for health care when health issues in his own and billet family made him realize how important families are. Matt reached out to EKFH and set a $5,000 fundraising goal through the regional hospital foundation. With amazing support from family, friends and hockey fans his $5,000 target was surpassed at the November 20 ICE home game followed by the lighting of star # 8 out of the seventeen atop the regional hospital during the November 27th Starlite Campaign launch.

In less than two weeks later, donations for Matt Fraser & Denny’s Shoot for the Star have shot to $10,261.97 with side by side stars now shining for his efforts. The majority of the gifts are being dedicated through EKFH to the area of greatest need as well as others to the regional oncology unit.

“When we started this fundraiser I thought $5,000 was going to be hard to get to, but now seeing donations over $10,000 I can’t believe the support. It’s a real eye-opener for me to see how much a community can do when it comes together,” explains Matt Fraser. “I can’t thank people enough for getting behind this and for making donations to a cause that means so much to me. I hope we can continue to raise as much money as possible,” adds Fraser.

However, it doesn’t stop here, some famous NHL’ers are bringing their Christmas spirit to help the left-winger’s goal by sending their jersey to be bid on. Details on the bidding process are still in planning and will be released at a later date. Matt and EKFH wish to recognize these amazing stars of hockey for this incredible support.

•Jarret Stoll, LA Kings #28 & Former ICE Captain (single autograph)•Rob Niedermayer, New Jersey #21 (team autograph 23 players)•Curtis Glencross, Calgary Flames #20 (team autograph 23 players)•Henrik Sedin, Vancouver Canucks #33 (single autograph)

The Matt Fraser & Denny’s Shoot for the Star fundraiser will continue with the Starlite Campaign wrapping up at the end of January 2010. For more information on the jersey opportunity please contact Donna Grainger at 250 489-6481, 1-877-489-6481 or email: donna.grainger@interiorhealth.ca .

Since its launch at the end of November, generous donors have blessed the Starlite Campaign with gifts totalling $47,781.97. At every $5,000 interval a star is lit atop the East Kootenay Regional Hospital for all to see. EKFH’s second year fundraising goal is $85,000. To make a gift, visit us on-line at www.ekfh.ca. All funds raised stay in the East Kootenay to help you, your family and friends.
