ICE Camp Report
There are 56 players at camp.
6 are goalies.
There is a big change in the goaltending department as Wyatt Hoflin is now the #1 netminder.
It's his 3rd year with the ICE.
Last year he won the last 3 games of the first round playoff series against Calgary.
Mackenzie Skapski has signed a contract with the NHL New York Rangers and could still be returned to the WHL but the ICE aren't expecting him to return.
The battle is on for the back-up job.
Watch out for - 18-year-old Jayden Sittler who played 1 game with the ICE last year and earned a win in his hometown of Red Deer.
18-year-old Keelan Williams is in his 1st camp with the ICE and played in the AJHL last year.
16-year-old Declan Hobbs is a highly touted netminder who was selected in the 3rd round of the 2013 Bantam draft.
18 are defensemen, 5 played full-time with the ICE last season.
They are Troy Murray, Jordan Steenbergen, Tyler King, Rinat Valiev and Tanner Faith.
The ICE usually carry 7 defensemen during the season so that means there are at least 2 spots open for some new blueliners.
Watch out for - 17-year-old Dylan Overydyk played 4 games with the ICE last season and is a former 2nd round pick by the ICE in the 2012 Bantam Draft.
16-year-old Cale Fleury is the younger brother of Red Deer's Haydn Fleury who was just selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. Like his brother Cale is a great skater and had a great camp with the ICE last year.
Griffen Mendel is at camp, he was the club's 1st pick in this summer's Bantam draft and is too young to play in the WHL full-time this season, but fans have a chance to see him this weekend.
There are 32 forwards.
The ICE have 10 forwards who played regularly in the WHL last year. 9 with the ICE and 1 with Moose Jaw.
The vets are Ryan Chynoweth, Kyle O'Connor, Jon Martin, Luke Philp, Jaedon Descheneau, Austin Vetterl, Matt Alfaro, Zak Zborosky and Levi Cable.
A new face is Russian Alexander Chirva who was selected by the ICE in the Import Draft and played for the Warriors last season.
The ICE usually go with 13 forwards during the regular season so that should mean there are 3 openings.
Watch out for - 17-year-old Austin Wellsby played 5 games with the ICE last year.
Jared Legien was the first round pick in the 2013 Bantam Draft.
Vince Loschiavo was their 2nd round pick in that same draft.

Cross and Peel Not At ICE Camp
Overage defensemen Landon Cross and Landon Peel have not reported to training camp.
They have told the ICE that they want to play in the MJHL.
ICE GM Jeff Chynoweth explained the situation ...
"Both players have informed us a different points in the summer that they would like to play Junior A this year in Manitoba. Landon Cross in Steinbach and Landon Peel in Portage. Unfortunately both players are going to be suspended for not reporting to camp and fulfilling their 20-year-old year of their WHL Standard Contract. How long the suspension lasts, I don't know. But I know the WHL is working with Hockey Manitoba and the Manitoba Junior League. It disappoints us that both guys aren't coming back. Not that we would have carried 2 20-year-old defensemen with what was coming back, definitely one of those two was going to be a big part of our hockey club. It's disappointing and we have to move on from it."
On why the WHL is involved ...
"I think they're concerned about players not fulfilling their contracts. When they signed their contracts they're for 5 years, usually from 16 to 20 and includes their 20-year-old season. Some of these players think that they have a chance to go play in a lower league, have some fun, maybe make a little more money you know playing that way, I don't know you'd have to ask each individual player. From our end it's just disappointing, from the league's end they've had our 2 players, they've had Reid Gow from Spokane and there's rumblings of a couple of other players. We've got to stick together as the Western Hockey League and the 22 teams because if players just want to walk whenever they can it doesn't bode well for our future."
On down to 2 overagers with Levi Cable and Austin Vetterl ...
"We'll see what happens if Mackenzie Skapski comes back. We'll deal with it at that time. Obviously Wyatt Hoflin gave us a big lift last year in the first round of the playoffs, won the series against Calgary. We think he is ready to be the number one guy so obviously if Mackenzie comes back we've got to make a decision on what's best for our organization moving forward. Until he's back we can't do anything."

From The ICE Office
Cranbrook, BC – Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced eight players will be attending National Hockey League Training Camps.
Leading the group of ICE players is forward, and second overall selection in this past June's NHL Entry Draft Sam Reinhart, who will attend Buffalo Sabres camp. Fellow forwards Jaedon Descheneau (St. Louis Blues) and Tim Bozon (Montreal Canadiens), defensemen Rinat Valiev (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Tanner Faith (Minnesota Wild), along with goaltender Mackenzie Skapski (New York Rangers) will all participate in their respective NHL camps as drafted players. In addition, forwards Luke Philp (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Jon Martin (Vancouver Canucks) have also been invited to attend NHL camps next month.
"Our organization is extremely proud to see eight roster players attend NHL camps this September," said Chynoweth. "The opportunity to participate in a training camp at the NHL level will be a rewarding and learning experience for each of them, and we're hopeful that experience will carry over into the upcoming season."
Kootenay ICE Training Camp begins Wednesday, August 27th at Western Financial Place, running through Sunday, August 31st with the annual United Way Black / White Intrasquad Game beginning at 12:00 pm.
Cranbrook, BC – Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced all proceeds from the 16th annual Black / White Intrasquad Game will once again be donated to the Cranbrook and Kimberley United Way.
The Black / White Intrasquad Game is scheduled for Sunday, August 31st at Western Financial Place beginning at 12:00 pm. The game will feature players competing to earn a spot on the 2014-2015 ICE roster along with top bantam draft selections.
“We are proud to continue a tradition of partnering with charitable organizations within our local community. Over the past 15 years, more than $30,000.00 has been raised for the Cranbrook and Kimberley United Way through this event,” said Chynoweth.
Fans wishing to attend the Black / White Intrasquad Game are asked to bring a minimum donation to the Cranbrook and Kimberley United Way of $5.00 per person.

Did a pre-camp interview with ICE GM Jeff Chynoweth and here is a quick recap on his comments ...
NHL signed players Sam Reinhart, Mackenzie Skapski and Tim Bozon will not be at ICE camp.
They do not expect any of them to return to the ICE but if they do it wouldn't be until the middle of October at the earliest.
The other ICE players who are going to NHL camps will be with the ICE for camp and the first 3 preseason games.
2 or 3 16-year-old could make the club.
There is room for a few 17-year-olds to earn a roster spot.

ICE Things
Training camp starts on August 25th.
The Annual Intrasquad game will be Sunday August 31st at 12p.
The ICE will release a complete training Camp schedule in the coming days.
On the radio we will have daily reports and there will also be updates on the blog and twitter.
As always, there will be reports and updates on every preseason game.
Speaking of radio, our ICE Pack promotion has been finalized.
There are 21 sponsors (9 last year) and if you used every coupon you will save $1200.
These go to every season ticket holder and remember there is still time to get your season tickets.
The home opener is October 3rd as the ICE will play 7 of their first 8 games on the road.
A new promotion starts next week.
It's called ICE Box Thursday's.
Every Thursday the radio stations will be on location from 1-4.
There will be giveaways, interviews with ICE staff and players and a few other surprizes.
We will do this every week until the regular season starts.
