ICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE finished the 2010-2011 regular season 46-21-1-4 (26-8-1-1 at home, 20-13-0-3 on the road, 1-1 in overtime, 4-4 in shootouts) and in fourth place in the EASTERN CONFERENCE and sixth in the WHL…The ICE have clinched a playoff spot for the 13th consecutive season and has tied CALGARY for the longest active streak in the WHL…KOOTENAY will be facing the MOOSE JAW WARRIORS in the playoffs for the second time in franchise history…In 2001, the ICE defeated MOOSE JAW in four games in the first round of the post season.

PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE: The ICE have a career playoff record of 69-56 (38-24 at home, 31-32 on the road, 18-10 in overtime)…KOOTENAY has 192 games of playoff experience which is the seventh most of the teams who qualified for the post season…KEVIN KING (27), CODY EAKIN (23) and BRAYDEN MCNABB (20) lead the ICE in games played in the playoffs.

EASTERN CONFERENCE QUARTER FINAL: Game One of the EASTERN CONFERENCE QUARTER FINAL vs. MOOSE JAW presented by KAL-TIRE and HUSKY / MOHAWK, will be played at home on Friday, March 25th and Game Two on Saturday, March 26th…The puck will drop for both games at 7:00 pm…Individual game tickets are now available at the KOOTENAY ICE Office.

RELAY FOR LIFE NIGHT: When the ICE host the MOOSE JAW WARRIORS on March 25th it will be RELAY FOR LIFE Night...Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to learn more about RELAY FOR LIFE and how to get involved.

WILDSTONE GOLF COURSE NIGHT: When KOOTENAY hosts the WARRIORS on March 26th it will be WILDSTONE GOLF COURSE NIGHT…Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to win a tee time on the opening day of WILDSTONE GOLF COURSE.

TAILGATE PARTY: On Saturday, March 26th when the ICE host MOOSE JAW the KOOTENAY ICE FAN CLUB will be hosting a TAILGATE PARTY…The party will start at 5:00 pm and run till 6:30pm…There will be a BBQ, adult beverages, door prizes and more.

DID YOU KNOW: KOOTENAY finished the regular season with 46 wins which is the third highest in franchise history (49 – 2006-2007, 47 – 2004-2005)…The ICE finished the regular season with 20 road wins which is a tie for fifth most in franchise history (22 – 2009-2010 and 2000-2001, 21 – 2007-2008 and 2006-2007, 20 – 2004-2005 and 2002-2003)…KOOTENAY has won 40+ games for the eighth time in franchise history and sixth in the last seven years…The ICE finished the 2010-2011 regular season with an above .500 record for the 12th consecutive season, which is the longest active streak in the WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE…KOOTENAY finished the regular season with a .500 or better road record for the tenth time in the last 12 years…The ICE lost 146 man games to injuries this season…KOOTENAY was 2-2-0-0 against MOOSE JAW in the regular season (2-0-0-0 at home, 0-2-0-0 on the road, 0-0 in overtime, 0-0 in shootouts)…MATT FRASER (2-3-5), JOE ANTILLA (2-3-5) and ELGIN PEARCE (3-1-4) led KOOTENAY in scoring against MOOSE JAW in the season series while DYLAN HOOD (3-3-6) and SPENCER EDWARDS (3-3-6) led the WARRIORS.

Cranbrook, BC – The Kootenay ICE handed out their 13th annual team awards prior to the start of the game against the Lethbridge Hurricanes tonight. Eight different players were recognized for their achievements. The individual winners are listed below:

Kootenay 7 Lethbridge 1 Game #72

Cranbrook, BC – The Kootenay ICE scored 4 goals in the 1st period and 3 in the 2nd period in a 7-1 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes in WHL action on Saturday night.

The ICE scored 4 goals in 3:44 (Franchise Record is 3:23) midway through the 1st period.
On the powerplay the opened the scoring as James Martin scored with a slap shot from the blueline that beat the goalie on the stickside.
Lethbridge misplayed the puck in their zone and Cody Eakin picked it up in the middle slot and backhanded a shot over the glove hand.
18 seconds later Joe Antill sent a long shot that hit the goalies’ shoulder and landed behind him near the goal line. Antilla crashed the net to put the puck into the net. The officials ruled no goal as the net was knocked off but video overturned the call and it was ruled a goal.
Matt Fraser raced back to stop a potential breakaway and then turned it to Max Reinhart who fed Cody Eakin on a 2-on-1 break and Eakin scored his 2nd of the period with a wrist shot high on the stick side.
Lethbridge changed goalies as Brandon Anderson replaced Dylan Tait.
Hurricanes scored late in the period as Austin Fyten fed Brody Sutter with a pass in the crease and redirected it for the goal.

In the 2nd period ICE made the score 5-1 as Kevin King was near the net and banged in a rebound off a Joe Antilla shot.
On the powerplay the puck was near the crease and Matt Fraser scored with a shot that went off a Hurricane into the net.
ICE made it 7-1 and Brendan Hurley almost had a breakway but the goalie came out for a poke check and puck hit Hurley in the chest and went directly into the net.

Eakin extended his point streak to 7 games (6-9-15).
Hayden Rintoul has a 4 game point streak (1-3-4).
Max Reinhart (2-3-5) and Matt Fraser (3-1-4) have 3 game point streaks.

Lethbridge @ Kootenay Game #72

The Kootenay ICE will host Lethbridge tonight in the final game of the regular season.
ICE lead the series 4-0-0-1 including a 5-3 win in Lethbridge last night.
ICE need to earn 1 more point than Medicine Hat to clinch 3rd place in the Conference. The Tigers play Calgary twice this weekend.
ICE will hand out their Year-End Awards at 7pm.
ICE will be raising money for the Cranbrook Men’s & Women’s Shelters as the team will be using blue sticks during warm up and in the first period of the game. The sticks will be auctioned off in a silent auction during the game behind Section U with all money raised being split between the two Shelters to aid in supplies.

ICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE enter this week’s action with a 43-21-1-4 record (25-8-1-1 at home, 18-13-0-3 on the road, 1-1 in overtime, 4-4 in shootouts) and in fourth place in the EASTERN CONFERENCE and sixth in the WHL…The ICE will finish the 2010-2011 regular season with an above .500 record for the 12th consecutive season, which is the longest active streak in the WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE…KOOTENAY has clinched a playoff spot for the 13th consecutive season and has tied CALGARY for the longest active streak in the WHL…The ICE have won 40+ games for the eighth time in franchise history and sixth in the last seven years…KOOTENAY will finish the regular season with a .500 or better road record for the tenth time in the last 12 years…This week the ICE will conclude their regular season against the CENTRAL DIVISION with two games on the road and one at home.

Kootenay 5 Swift Current 4 SO Game #68

Cranbrook, BC – The Kootenay ICE clinched at least 4th place in the eastern Conference with a 5-4 overtime shootout win over the Swift Current Broncos in WHL action on Friday night.

The loss eliminates Swift Current from making the playoffs.

ICE opened the scoring as Brayden McNabb fed Adam Rossignol in the low circle and took the pass from his skates to the stick and scored before the goalie came across the crease.
Brayden McNabb fed Cody Eakin with a stretch pass and went on a 2-on-1 break and he scored with a wrist shot on the glove side.
Broncos scored on the powerplay as a loose puck was found near the crease and lifted into the net by Brad Hoban.

Early in the 2nd period Joey Leach’s point shot was deflected by Joe Antilla and skipped over the goalies reaching leg.
Midway through the period the ICE dumped the puck into the zone and Steele Boomer won the race for the puck and banked the puck off the back off the goalie and in rolled into the net.

In the 3rd period the Broncos scored on the powerplay as Stepan Novotny went end-to-end and scored on a breakaway with a backhand deke through the legs.
Late in the 3rd period the Broncos got within a goal as Adam Lowry banged in his own rebound.
The Broncos pulled their goalie and tied the game 4-4 as Graham Black, in his 2nd WHL game, banged in a rebound.

The ICE won the shootout 2-1 on goals by Cody Eakin and Max Reinhart.
Graham Black scored for the Broncos.

The Broncos are now 0-34-0-1 when trailing after 2 periods.

Canada West Awards

Calgary, AB -- The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that 100% of all Canada West University Hockey Award winners and 10 of the 12 Canada West University Hockey All Stars are graduates of the WHL. All are currently utilizing Western Canada's Premier Hockey Scholarship, a combination of the guaranteed WHL Scholarship and additional financial assistance provided by each individual Canada West Men's Hockey University program.

Spokane Chiefs graduate and fourth-year Alberta Golden Bears forward Derek Ryan was named Canada West University Hockey Most Valuable Player and also captured the 2010-11 Dave “Sweeney” Schriner Scoring Trophy tallying 17 goals and adding 30 assists for 47 points in 28 conference games. He recorded the most points by a Canada West player since 2005-06, while the 24-year-old led CW in goals, hat tricks (2) and was second in assists and placed third in CIS scoring.

Award winners are now considered for national awards, to be handed out by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) at the 2011 University Cup, March 24-27 in Fredericton, NB.

CANADA WEST – Announcing the 2010-11 men’s hockey individual award winners and All-Stars, as selected by Canada West head coaches.

Conference Most Valuable Player and CIS Sullivan Trophy nominee is fourth-year Alberta Golden Bears forward Derek Ryan.

Ryan, a Spokane, WA product who also picked up the Dave “Sweeney” Schriner Scoring Trophy after earning career-highs across the board, tallying 17 goals and adding 30 assists for 47 points in 28 conference games. He recorded the most points by a Canada West player since 2005-06, while the 24-year-old led CW in goals, hat tricks (2) and was second in assists and placed third in CIS scoring.

Named October’s Husky-WHL Graduate of the Month back in October, the Science major also makes a second consecutive appearance as a First Team All-Star.

“Shift in and shift out, Derek is one of the hardest-working, most highly skilled players in the CIS,” said Bears head coach Eric Thurston. “His ability to play in all situations, in all three zones makes him one of the most solid performers in the country. In four seasons of watching him mature and develop with the Golden Bears, he has proven that he is not only a solid hockey player and a strong student, but also an exceptional young man who combines a desire to succeed on the ice, in the classroom and in life.”

Taking the Mervyn “Red” Dutton Trophy for a third straight season as the league’s Outstanding Defenceman is Alberta’s Kyle Fecho.

In his fifth and final Canada West season Fecho, a 26-year-old Business student from Hanna, AB, matches a mark established by former U of C defender Doug Quinn, who won the award in 1989, 1990 and 1991. The golden Bears alternate captain also gets a third consecutive All-Star nod from conference voters.

In 28 games, Fecho scored two goals and had 13 points, producing a +7 rating as first-place Alberta went 19-6-3 on the season. No stranger to success with the championship tournament-bound Bears, Fecho has already won a CIS title (2008) and three previous Canada West banners (2008, 2009, 2010) entering this weekend’s conference final.

Head coach Eric Thurston stated, “Once again this season we have relied upon Kyle for leadership on the blue line and he has delivered. Over the five seasons with the Golden Bears he has consistently been one of the CIS outstanding defencemen. He has done it all, playing on both our power-play and penalty-killing units, while playing against opponents top lines game in and game out. His consistent defensive play and outstanding play in all areas on the ice make him one of the keys to our success.”

Awarded the University of Alberta Hockey Alumni Trophy as Outstanding Freshman is Manitoba’s Jeremy Schappert.

Schappert, a 22-year-old former member of the Western hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds, had a strong rookie campaign with the Bisons, placing fifth in scoring among defenceman, eighth overall in rookie scoring, with 14 points (6G-8A-14) while playing in all 28 regular season games.

With the Bisons, he was the top defenceman in scoring and was asked to play heavy minutes against the top lines throughout the 2010-11 Canada West season. The Winnipeg native added a +4 plus/minus rating with four power play goals and 22 penalty minutes with Manitoba.

Bison men’s hockey head coach Mike Sirant said, “Jeremy was consistently one of the Bisons top performers this season. He quickly earned the trust of the coaching staff and was heavily relied upon in all key situations, including power play and penalty killing. Jeremy is an intelligent and mobile defenseman with an excellent offensive skill set, who also plays a physical, solid defensive game. He competes hard every game and is committed to team goals and winning.”

Another member of the Golden Bears, Edmonton native Sean Ringrose, wins the UBC Hockey Alumni Trophy for Sportsmanship & Ability.

The 5-10 Physical Education & Recreation student is the 10th University of Alberta player to win the honour. Offensively, Ringrose finished fifth in league scoring with 14-13-27 and just five penalties for 10 total minutes. As one of the league’s top power-play producers, he had five goals and 12 points with the man advantage. He had an impressive eight-game scoring streak early in the season and helped the U of A to a CIS No. 3 national ranking.

“Sean is one of the premier two-way players in CIS hockey, who combines offensive ability and defensive determination. He is a highly skilled centre who is used in all situations,” stated head coach Eric Thurston. “His skill set makes him an offensive threat and his work ethic and determination makes him a solid defensive player, who sees considerable time on our penalty killing unit. He has a willingness to accept any role for the team’s success, while he displays a respect for his teammates, opponents and the game.”

Named the Canada West nominee for the prestigious Randy Gregg Award for Athletic ability, Academics & Citizenship is Alberta Golden Bears team captain, forward Eric Hunter.

In his fourth year of eligibility Hunter, a Business student who hails from Oakbank, MB, moved into the role of captain after two seasons as an alternate captain. On the ice he picked up 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points, good for 11th in Canada West scoring.

Off the ice, the two-time CIS Academic All-Canadian had a 3.40 grade point average (GPA) and will graduate from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Business degree.

In the community Hunter has been the Golden Bears hockey representative on the University Athletic Board for the past two seasons. , working with various community groups and charities. Programs include Athlete visits to the Stollery Children’s Hospital located in the University of Alberta Hospital, food drives for the University of Alberta Food Bank, fund raising efforts for the charity “Kids Sport”, a program dedicated to helping underprivileged children participate in youth sport and participation at Read-In Week.

Hunter has also worked with the University of Alberta’s “U School”, a program that brings elementary school students onto the campus, where one of the key components to this is the “stay in school” approach that is discussed with the children. He served as the Assistant Director of the 2010 University of Alberta Golden Bears Summer Hockey Camp, in charge of staffing the camp’s on-ice instructors, registration, ice rentals, etc.

“Eric has proven himself to be a natural leader for our team this season. As our team captain he has shown tremendous leadership on the ice, in the classroom and in the community with his hard work and effort.

Alberta head coach Eric Thurston offered his thoughts: “Eric’s leadership has been very important to the team this season as we have a very young team that has 15 players in either their first or second season in the lineup for most games. He has shown the new players in our program what it takes to be a successful student-athlete in the CIS. His skill and physical play makes him one of our top offensive players and his highly competitive nature makes him a solid example of the ultimate power forward.”

University of Calgary head coach Mark Howell is the Canada West Coach of the Year after leading his team to its best finish in 15 seasons.

After the Dinos missed the playoffs in 2009, Howell took over and has reeled off back-to-back post-season appearances, a second-place finish this season, and home ice advantage. Calgary defeated Saskatchewan in the semi-final last weekend to advance to the Canada West Final for the first time since 1996 and earn the program’s first University Cup appearance since 2000.

Including this season’s 17-8-3 finish, Howell has racked up a 30-17-9 record in his first two seasons and will lead the Dinos against the University of Alberta Golden Bears – the team he played for in the early 1990s – in this weekend’s conference championship series.

“In just two short years, Mark has re-established the University of Calgary as one of the premier hockey programs in Western Canada,” said Wayne Giles, Dean of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. “His dedication and tireless work have led to success and a trip to the University Cup, and we congratulate him on this well-deserved honour.”

Compiling the lowest team goal against average was the Calgary Dinos goaltending duo of Dustin Butler and Kris Lazaruk, who earned the Adam Kryczka Memorial Trophy. The Dinos surrendered 67 goals over 28 games, an average of 2.29 per contest.

Taking the Fair Play Trophy for the eighth time in nine years are the Alberta Golden Bears, which had a league-low 325 penalty minutes over 28 games.

As top goalkeeper, Butler will also try to become the second straight Canada West winner of the CIS Goaltender of the Year Award, won last year by the Bisons’ Steve Christie, who has made the All-Star team again this season.

Selections to the 2010-11 All-Star team include Ryan, Fecho and Butler, who all make the First All-Star list, while Schappert was selected to the Second Team. Fecho and Chad Klassen each make a third straight appearance on the Canada West first team, while Ryan and Steve Christie are All-Stars for a third straight year. Reid Jorgensen has now been voted to the all-conference roster two years running, and 2009 All-Star Kyle Ross is back on the roster after making the jump from Regina to the University of Saskatchewan.

The Canada West championship takes place in Edmonton this weekend, where the Alberta Golden Bears host the Calgary Dinos in a best-of-three series beginning Friday night at Clare Drake Arena. Both teams have qualified for the University Cup.

At Kootenay Orchards School they have a stuffed Great Horned Owl.
Recently the grade 1/2 class led by Mrs. Zimich decided to name the owl and she let the students come up with names and voted on the winning name.
Escaper came in 2nd, but in a landslide Steele Boomer was the name that won.
The ICE heard about this unique story and today Boomer will be at the school to meet the class and the owl.

This is just one of the hundreds of community visits the ICE do every year. The club is in the top 5 for community visits in the WHL.

At times I visit these events with the players and it's still magical for the students to receive visits by the players. The teacher and students talk about it for days and weeks leading up to the big day. The whole school seems to come to a stand still as the hockey celebrities make their appearance. I always hope the parents hear and see how excited the kids are and can find ways to take them to a few games. 10-15 years from now they could and should be the new season ticket holders.

Nella To Receive Award At Game Friday

Calgary – Ron Robison, Commissioner of the Western Hockey League, announced today, on behalf of the WHL Board of Governors, the recipients of the WHL Distinguished Service Award. For the 2010 – 11 season.

The 2010 – 11 WHL Distinguished Service Award recipients are Lorne Frey, the current Assistant General Manager of Kelowna Rockets and Nella Rounsville, a longtime volunteer for the Kootenay Ice as their Education Advisor and Golf Tournament Chairperson.

Frey has been a member of the Kelowna Rockets since the Rockets inception in Tacoma in 1991-92. With the Rockets Frey has helped build teams that have gone to four Memorial Cup Championships, winning the crown in 2004. Prior to Kelowna, Frey also won a Memorial Cup in 1988-89 as the Assistant GM and Assistant Coach of the Swift Current Broncos. Frey has overseen such Rockets WHL Bantam Draft picks as NHLers Tyler Myers, Brandon McMillan, Luke Schenn, Scott Hannan, Cody Almond, Blake Comeau, Tyler Spurgeon, Todd Fedoruk and Scott Parker as well as listed players Shea Weber, Josh Gorges, Travis Moen and Kyle Cumiskey. In the past 10 years, with Frey at the helm of the scouting staff, the Rockets have had just one losing season.

Since their first season of play in Cranbrook back in 1998-99, Rounsville has been the Kootenay Ice Education Advisor. Being a former teacher and competitive athlete, she understands what it takes for the players to succeed on the ice and in the classroom. The Kootenay Ice created a yearly scholarship in her name which is handed out yearly to a Mount Baker High School student who best demonstrates classroom excellence and volunteerism in the community. Rounsville is also the chairperson of the Kootenay Ice’s Annual Golf Tournament which has raised over $320,000 in 12 years for the Kootenay Ice Education Fund.

The WHL Distinguished Service Award, which the WHL introduced during in 2004 – 05, is presented annually to an individual associated with the WHL who has made an extraordinary contribution over an extended period of time at the Club or League level.

WHL Commissioner Ron Robison will be in Kelowna tonight, Wednesday, March 9 to present Lorne Frey with the honor and at the Kootenay Ice game Friday, March 11 to acknowledge Nella Rounsville as part of the pre-game ceremonies.

Cranbrook, BC – Cody Eakin had 1 goal and 3 assists as the Kootenay ICE beat the Moose Jaw warriors 5-1 in WHL action on Tuesday night.

Moose Jaw opened the scoring as Spencer Edwards was open in the low slot and lifted a shot off the cross bar and into the net.
ICE tied the game on the powerplay as Brayden McNabb’s shot was stopped and the rebound was put away by Matt Fraser.

In the 2nd period the ICE scored 2 goal 39 seconds apart.
On the powerplay Max Reinhart fed Cody Eakin with a cross ice pass and he scored with a one time shot high on the stick side.
The ICE made it 3-1 as Elgin Pearce was near the crease for the rebound goal.

In the 3rd period the ICE made it 4-1 as Max Reinhart drove the slot and scored with a wrist shot that found it’s way through the goalie.
The ICE scored their 3rd powerplay goal of the game as Brayden McNabb from the blueline scored with a wrist shot that beat the screened goalie high on the glove side.
Warriors changed goalies as Brandon Stone replaced Thomas Heemskerk.

The ICE and Warriors split their 4 game regular season series with the home team winning each game.

McNabb has set the season records for assists in a season for a defenseman (44 Gerard Dicaire 02-03) and points in a season for a defenseman (63 Mike Busto 06-07) and tied for most goals by a defenseman (20 Mike Busto 06-07).

ICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE enter this week’s with a 41-21-1-3 record (23-8-1-1 at home, 18-13-0-2 on the road, 1-1 in overtime, 3-3 in shootouts) and in fourth place in the EASTERN CONFERENCE and sixth in the WHL…The ICE will finish the 2010-2011 regular season with an above .500 record for the 12th consecutive season, which is the longest active streak in the WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE…KOOTENAY finished the regular season with a .500 or better road record for the tenth time in the last 12 seasons…KOOTENAY has clinched a playoff spot for the 13th consecutive season and has tied CALGARY for the longest active streak in the WHL…The ICE have won 40 games this season for the eighth time in franchise history and sixth in the last seven years…KOOTENAY will play six more games of the regular season (three at home, three on the road).

ICE HELP THOSE IN NEED: The KOOTENAY ICE are teaming up with the MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SHELTERS OF CRANBROOK to raise money for supplies…On Saturday, March 19th when the ICE host LETHBRIDGE in the last regular season game the team will be playing with blue sticks that will be auctioned off behind Section U during the game…The winning bids will have the opportunity to meet the player and have their picture taken following the game.

Saskatoon, Sask – The Saskatoon Blades swept the 4-game regular season series against the Kootenay ICE with a 9-2 win in WHL action on Friday night.

Matt Fraser and Joe Antilla scored for the ICE.
Fraser's 30th came on a breakaway with the clubs skating 4-on-4.
Antilla got his 20th and it was the 18th shorthanded goal by the ICE this year.
Brayden McNabb received a major penalty for boarding and the play is automatically reviewed by the league and could receive a suspension.
Because of other penlaties the Blades only received a 3 minute major powerplay but still scored 2 goals and gave up a shorthanded goal.

It’s the 2nd 3-game losing streak by the ICE this season.
The last time was January 21-26 and they followed it by winning 8 of the next 9 games.

ICE Help Local Charity

Cranbrook, BC -- Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced that the ICE will be raising money for the Cranbrook Men’s & Women’s Shelters.

On Saturday, March 19th when the ICE host the Lethbridge Hurricanes, the team will be using blue sticks during warm up and in the first period of the game. The sticks will be auctioned off in a silent auction during the game behind Section U with all money raised being split between the two Shelters to aid in supplies. The winning bidders will receive their blue sticks after the game from the ICE Players.
