Update from the Reach Out Program.
The Reach Out Committee has been working with Melanie Fiorentino at the Community Living Centre for the past four years. This year, there are 120 people relying on this worthwhile Program to share in the excitement of watching the ICE games. These individuals would not normally have the opportunity to attend ICE home games without your sponsorship. Many of them are often isolated and they greatly appreciate joining our community at the Rec Plex.
We understand that these are challenging economic times. To date we have managed to get sponsorships for 60 Reach Out tickets and we thank those individuals who have purchased them.
The deadline for this program is September 30.
We, and the beneficiaries of the Reach Out Program, thank you for your support.

Kootenay @ Red Deer Game #1

The Kootenay ICE are in Red Deer tonight in the season opener for both clubs.
The ICE are defending WHL Champions and the Rebels are defending Central Division winners.
As happens in junior hockey, both teams have lost key players from the previous season.
Rebels lost their #1 goalie Darcy Kuemper and have 2 rookie netminders this year.
ICE have 1 rookie goalie, 3 new defensemen and 6 new forwards and most will be playing tonight.
ICE had 2 changes to their roster yesterday as they reassigned goalie Brett Teskey.
The new goalie on the team is Mackenzie Skapski.
20-year-old James Martin has signed a contract with the Calgary Flames and will play for their farm club in Abbotsford.
Max Reinhart is with the Flames for the weekend and Drew Czerwonka is out with a shoulder injury.
Rebels are without Ryan Nugent Hopkins.
The ICE will start the season on the road for the 1st time since 2007. Over the years the clubs have played each other over 100 times in the regular season.
Last year the Rebels won 6 of the 8 head-to-head meetings, with one of the wins in a shootout.
It’ll be a different looking ICE team tonight with only 12 returning players in the lineup.

On the broadcast Head Coach Kris Knoblauch and Assisntant Coach will tell us more on the 10 rookies still with the club.
Also comments from James Martin on tonight's broadcast.

James Martin Signs

The ICE roster is now down 25 players as 20-year-old defenseman James Martin has signed a contract with the Calgary Flames and will play for their farm club in Abbotsford.

The ICE are now down to the league limit of 3 over-agers (Lieuwen, Ismond, Antilla).

They are now down to 2 goalies, 7 defenseman and 16 forwards.

Teskey Reassigned

Cranbrook, BC -- Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the club has reassigned 18-year-old goaltender Brett Teskey to a team and League to be determined.
"With three goaltenders vying for two spots we felt to be fair to the goalies it was important to get down to our roster sooner rather than later. It is always difficult when you have to release a veteran player and we would like to thank Brett for his contribution to our Championship team last year and wish him all the best in his future hockey endeavours," added Chynoweth.
As a result of today's transaction, the ICE are carrying two goaltenders, eight defencemen and 16 forwards. Of those, Drew Czerwonka (Edmonton), Max Reinhart (Calgary) and James Martin (Calgary) still remain at NHL Training Camps.
The ICE Home Opener will be September 24 against the Calgary Hitmen at 6:55 pm. Tickets are available at the Kootenay ICE Office or by calling 250-417-0322. The Recplex Box Office will be open starting at 12:00 pm on Saturday, September 24.

Czerwonka Injured

The ICE will be without Drew Czerwonka 2-3 weeks after suffering a shoulder injury at Oilers camp.
Levi Cable is close to returning after getting an ankle injury in training camp.
The only players at NHL camps are Max Reinhart and James Martin who are both with the Calgary Flames and will play in games for them this weekend.
Reinhart will be back next week.
Unless Martin signs a contract he should be back with the ICE next week.

Jersey #'s

As of now the ICE have 11 rookies on the roster with up to 5 more cuts to the roster to be finalized.
I'll have the complete list of jersey #'s on Friday.
A couple of veterans have changed jersey numbers as Elgin Pearce has switched from #17 to #7 which was worn last year by Kevin King.
Adam Rossignol has switched #8 for #15 which was Steele Boomer's last year.
Dylan McKinlay will have #8.
Sam Reinhart will have #10 after using #12 for a few games.

Montgomery Healthy & Pros Update

The Kootenay ICE will have Brock Montgomery available this weekend as he has fully recovered from hernia surgery.
He was supposed to be unavailable until October but has recovered earlier than expected.
Nathan Lieuwen, Drew Czerwonka and Joey Leach will arrive in Cranbrook over the next few days while Max Reinhart and James Martin are having longer visits with the Flames and won't be with the club for another week.

Monday, September 19, 2011

10 Things I Think I Think

1. I think because of 5 players at NHL camps and 2 injuries the ICE keeping 27 players on the roster makes mathematical sense. They’ll have enough bodies to have complete line-up for the weekend games.

2. I think the ICE have no regrets in using very young line-ups during the preseason. Wins and losses mean nothing in the exhibition season. A few of the games the opposition had 3 20-years olds and 7-8 19-year olds and beat the ICE by lopsided scores. But the ICE have better understanding on who is ready to play in the WHL than they did 2 weeks ago.

3. I think the ICE will use 20-year-old forwards Joe Antilla and Jesse Ismond this weekend as over-agers. Nathan Lieuwen and James Martin may still be with their NHL teams. Antilla arrived in Cranbrook a few days ago but was still waiting for his equipment to arrive from San Jose.

4. I think looking down the road for next year they ICE have to be concerned they have only one 18-year-old defenseman (Dirk) and one 17-year-old forward (Cable).

5. I think looking down the road for the next few years the ICE have to be excited they had 8 16-year-olds seriously challenge for a roster spot this year.

6. I think the ICE and all WHL teams are at the mercy of NHL as they wait for players to be returned to junior.

7. I think when I was attending the ICE practices this week and looked up to the Rec-Plex rafters and noticed they moved the current banners over to make room for 2 new ones is when I started to really look forward to the home opener. Whether you went to one game or all of them last year, you should be a part of the special ceremonies on Saturday.

8. I think I’m surprised the ICE Reach Program idea hasn’t caught on in other WHL cities.

9. I think one of the best parts of a new season is reading over the ICE Record Book. I’m not sure how many WHL teams have such a book but I’m glad the ICE have documented their entire history. It’s now 156 pages.

10. I think these are my non-hockey thoughts.
a) I’ll give Netflex and try for the 1-month trail. The complete history of The Larry Sanders Show is going to great to watch. Hey Now.

b) Watching House without the character Cuddy is going to be a totally different show.

c) If the Red Sox didn’t win the 04 & 07 World Series’, their fans would be unbearable with what has happened this month.

ICE Weekend

ICE will finish their exhibition schedule with 2 games this weekend in the Crowsnest Pass.
Friday 7p vs Lethbridge and Sunday 2p vs Calgary.
Period reports on radio, updates on blog and twitter.

Not much else happening with the club as they still have 6 players at NHL camps and a couple guys injured.

If you didn't hear the comments on the radio from Kris Knoblauch who was with Jeff Chynoweth in Calgary for the WHL 7-Point Plan seminar to deal with concussions eralier this week, he says the penalties for dangerous hits and hits to the head will result in longer suspensions.
He feels the league does not want to get rid of the physical play just the dangerous hits.
Next step is to inform the players and teach everyone on how to make things safer for the players.
Details of the plan are on the WHL website.

WHL Seminar

Calgary, AB – For the first time in recent WHL history, all 22 WHL General Managers and Head Coaches will be in attendance for a seminar in Calgary, Alberta on Tuesday, September 13. Following the WHL AGM in June, a Seven Point Plan was adopted by the WHL to reduce blows to the head and concussions. One point in the plan was for all WHL Head Coaches and General Managers to take part in a seminar conducted by the WHL to fully review the Seven Point Plan in detail and to go over the new WHL Playing Rule changes that coincide with the plan.

--------------------------------------

WHL SEVEN POINT PLAN

The WHL Seven Point Plan is a comprehensive approach to addressing this important matter and includes the adoption of new playing rules; more severe suspensions for repeat offenders; production of an educational video on risks of concussions to educate the players to be more responsible for themselves on the ice; a seminar for all WHL Head Coaches and General Managers; new soft cap elbow and shoulder pads; expanded research data and a review of all WHL arena facilities safety standards.

The WHL Playing Rule changes includes the adoption of a Checking to the Head penalty for lateral and blind side hits to an unsuspecting opponent in open ice where the head is targeted or is the principle point of contact. The WHL also tightened the standard on late hits as well as charging and interference penalties to address players building up significant speed and hitting the opponent along the boards with excessive force. The WHL also adopted a new embellishment rule and introduced automatic suspensions for players who receive multiple penalties for checking to the head, checking from behind, embellishment and kneeing.

10 Things I Think I Think

1. I think it would be great if Cranbrook could host an WHL Exhibition Tournament. Biggest challenge is enough dressing rooms to host 3-4 more teams for 4-5 days. Tri City has been a great host the past 2 years the ICE have attended.

2. I think it was great to have 15-year-old Collin Shirley, the clubs' 1st pick in the 2011 Bantam Draft, play in 3 preseason games. Sonehow the ICE have another solid prospect even though they continue to draft late in the 1st round.

3. I think of the 3 goalies who played in preseason games Mackenzie Skapski had the best performance.

4. I think during training camp Brett Teskey was the most consistent.

5. I think of the 3 rookie defensemen who played on the weekend Spencer Wand had the best performance.

6. I think during training camp not much seperated Wand, Jeff Hubic and Mike Simpson in the battle for 2 defenseman roster spots.

7. I think of the 8 rookie forwards who played in Tri City it was Sam Reinhart and Jaedon Descheneau who stood out in a great way.

8. I think during training camp Jesse Wood-Shatz joined Reinhart and Descheneau in having great camps.

9. I think it's going to be very tough for the ICE to be down to 22 players for their final roster. Some times the final cut is the hardest, this year it might be the final 3 cuts.

10. I think these are my non-hockey thoughts.
a) There will be an announcement soon from the Homerun Society. Hopefully this is the last summer without full-time baseball in Cranbrook.

b) If you have a bucket list, visiting Ground Zero should be added.

c) Bring on the new Fall TV Season.

From The ICE Office

Cranbrook, BC – The Kootenay ICE Hockey Club will open their 2011 Western Hockey League Training Camp Wednesday, August 31 at 9:15 am. This year’s Training Camp will once again combine rookie-aged players (players born in 1996), with veteran players (players born in 1991 to 1995). All ice sessions will take place at the Cranbrook Rec Plex.
“Training Camp is an exciting start to the season. The camp provides the opportunity for our coaches and scouting staff to see and evaluate our recently drafted players, while monitoring the progress of our veteran and list players. ICE Training Camp

ICE Training camp officially starts on Wednesday but the veterans will have a few on-ice sessions and their fitness testing over the next couple of days.

It’s going to be quite a battle in goaltending as the club has 3 netminders with WHL experience.
WHL Playoff MVP Nathan Lieuwen is 20-years-old and a draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres.
The Sabres could keep him in their minor league system.
Lieuwen had hernia surgery after the playoffs and is now completely healthy.
18-year-old Brett Teskey played in 18 games last year and had 9 wins and 2 shutouts.
17-year-old Mackenzie Skapski played in 3 games last year and has shown he is ready to be in the WHL.
16-year-old Wyatt Hoflin was a 2nd round pick in 2010 and the club was really happy with his progress last season.
If Lieuwen returns it’s a battle to see who is the back-up.
If he doesn’t the ICE will have 2 goalies under the age of 19 and would be the youngest in the WHL.

The club has 5 returning defensemen as they lose Captain Brayden McNabb and the traded Hayden Rintoul.
20-year-old defenseman James Martin has been rewarded for a strong season with an invite to the Calgary Flames camp.
19-year-old Joey Leach, a Flames draft pick will have an expanded role this season.
19-year-old Luke Paulsen will be in his 3rd season with ICE.
19-year-old John Niebrandt played forward and defense last year.
18-year-old Jagger Dirk will be looked upon to help with some offence from the blueline.
3 prospects played for the club in call-ups last year including 17-year-old Mike Simpson who appeared in 4 games, 17-year-old Jeff Hubic played in 3 games and 16-year-old Tanner Faith suited up for 4 games.
Because of an injury 18-year-old Dylan Schellenberg didn’t attend last years camp but should get a long look this year.

Last year the ICE had 2 forward spots available, this year with the departures of Fraser, King, Boomer, Eakin and possibly Joe Antilla or Jesse Ismond to the overage situation, the club could have up to 5 new forwards.
The returnees include 19-year-olds Drew Czerwonka, Max Reinhart, Elgin Pearce, Brock Montgomery had hernia surgery and is out until October and the newly acquired Dylan McKinlay.
18-year-olds Brendan Hurley, Adam Rossignol and Eric Benoit will have a chance to play on the 2nd and 3rd lines.
16-year-old Sam Reinhart is a given to make the club.
Prospects that are expected to challenge for a spot include 17-year-olds Levi Cable who played in 4 games last year, Jared Iron, Kurt Johnas and 16-year-olds Jaedon Descheneau, Jonathan Martin and Luke Philp.

Blue-White Game

Cranbrook, BC – Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced all proceeds from the 13th annual Blue-White Intrasquad Game will once again be donated to the Cranbrook and Kimberley United Way.
The Blue-White game will be played at the Cranbrook Rec Plex on Sunday, September 4 at 12:00 pm. The game will feature players who are competing to earn a spot on the 2011-2012 roster along with top draft choices.
“We are continuing with the tradition of partnering with charitable organizations within our community. Over the past 12 years almost $26,000.00 has been raised for the Cranbrook United Way through this event,” said Chynoweth.
The cost to attend the Blue-White game will be a minimum donation to the Cranbrook and Kimberley United Way of $5.00 per person.

ICE Rings

My camera doesn't do justice as to how beautiful the ICE Championship ring is, but here is a pic so you know what it looks like.
This is just the top of the ring, as both sides have special designs.

This years ring is white gold as compared to the 2002 Memorial Cup ring.

ICE Golf Wrap-up

The Kootenay ICE held their golf tournament yesterday at the Cranbrook Golf course.
The team led by Director of Scouting Garnet Kazuik finished in 1st place. The highlight of the evening was GM Jeff Chynoweth handing out the WHL Championship rings to the players and staff.
More money was raised with the auction which included jersey's of Cody Eakin and Brayden McNabb, plus some Memorial Cup items.
The event was a fundraiser for the Education Fund.
The clubs training camp starts on Wednesday.

ICE Golf

Special day today as the Kootenay ICE hold their Golf Tournament.
It's the biggest fundraiser of the year for the ICE Education Fund.
It's been held every year since the club moved to Cranbrook except 2 years ago when they skipped a year.
A couple of the players who will be using the Fund this year and will be on the course today are Steve DaSilva and Eric Frere.
Later tonight the event will include a silent auction and a live auction with some great items up for bid.

ICE Extend Contracts

Cranbrook, BC -- Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the Club has picked up the option year on the contracts for Director of Scouting Garnet Kazuik, Head Coach Kris Knoblauch and Assistant Coaches Todd Johnson and Jerry Bancks through the 2012-2013 season.
“We are very happy that each of these individuals will remain with our Hockey Club for the next two years. The success we have maintained over the past 13 years both on and off the ice can partially be attributed to having good people in key positions. Stability and continuity is the key to any successful organization and these four gentlemen are a big part of what we are all trying to achieve”, continued Chynoweth.
Garnet Kazuik is finishing up his fourth season as Director of Scouting for the ICE. He also spent two years (2005 – 2007) as an Alberta Scout for the Club. Garnet played in the Western Hockey League with the Brandon Wheat Kings, Moose Jaw Warriors and Regina Pats (1984-1987).
Kris Knoblauch came on board with the Club as Assistant Coach in August of 2007 and became the fifth Head Coach in franchise history last season. In his rookie season, Kris led the ICE to their third WHL Championship in 11 years posting a 16-3 record in the playoffs. He played three seasons in the Western Hockey League and was a member of both the Edmonton (1997-1998) and Kootenay ICE (1988-1999). He also played with the Red Deer Rebels (1996-1997) and Lethbridge Hurricanes (1998-1999) before playing five years with the University of Alberta Golden Bears while obtaining his Bachelor of Education degree.
Todd Johnson joined the organization last August. He played three seasons in the WHL with the Moose Jaw Warriors (1990-1991), Kamloops Blazers (1991-1992) and Red Deer Rebels (1992-1993). Todd played five years at the University of Calgary (1993-1998) and obtained a Bachelor of Education degree.

ICE New Trainer

Cranbrook, BC -- Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the Club has hired Cory Cameron as their new Athletic Therapist.

“It is not easy finding a qualified and experienced Athletic Therapist, but we feel Cory will be a welcome addition to our staff. He comes highly recommended to our organization and will be a important fixture between the Coaching Staff and the players,” continued Chynoweth.

A native of Revelstoke, BC, Cory joins the ICE after spending six years working as a Rehabilitation Consultant with Crash Conditioning in Calgary. He has worked previously in the WHL with the Vancouver Giants as Head Athletic Trainer (2006-2009) and as an Assistant Trainer with the Calgary Hitmen (2004-2006).

10 Things I Think I Think

1. I think Sunny and +28 for Friday makes it's a perfect day for the ICE Golf Tournament. It's a big fundraiser for the Scholarship Fund.

2. I think it's hard to believe the WHL regular season starts 1 month from today as on Thursday September 22nd Moose Jaw will open their new building against Brandon.

3. I think I'd like to see you at the ICE training camp which starts next week at the Rec-Plex. It's free air conditioning. I'll have complete schedule details soon. Blue-White will be on Sunday September 4th.

4. I think you'll be hearing a new but familiar voice doing colour commentary on the ICE radio broadcasts this season. George Watson has returned to China for another year and we thank him for his dedicated contributions the past few years. We are planning on having Kyle Christensen doing Post-Game interviews from the benches and a few games of guest analyst work. Who is the new person? That will be revealed soon. That is what we call a tease in the radio business.

5. I think the ICE are very happy with their goaltending depth. They have 3 with WHL experience (Lieuwen, Teskey, Skapski) and a prospect (Hoflin)who is coming off a great year.

6. I think the ICE are happy with their defenseman depth considering they lost McNabb (graduated) and Rintoul (traded). Big holes to fill but in junior hockey you expect that year-after-year.

7. I think the ICE are happy with their forwards depth but would like one more top-6 guy. If they trade Antilla or Ismond to finalize the over-ager situation their biggest need is someone on the 2nd line that can score. The top line is solid, the 3rd and 4th lines will feature veterans sprinkled with a few rookies.

8. I think it'll be strange to see Cory Clouston on the visitors bench at the Rec-Plex. That doesn't happen until January 24th.

9. I think I'm enjoying the world of twitter. If you haven't yet, follow JHollick_Ice.

10. I think these are my non-hockey thoughts.
a) This summer I've learned 95% of drivers don't understand what a passing lane is.

b) The only bad thing from the summer holidays was the 1 1/2-2 hour line-up at the Kingsgate border crossing. Over the years it was never longer that 10 minutes. Can't get the new building built quick enough.

c) It's amazing to see how many people are happy to see the Roughriders struggling this year. Are they the Yankees of the CFL? Either you love them or hate them I guess.

ICE Trade Benning

Cranbrook, BC – Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the club has traded 17-year-old Defense prospect Matt Benning (May 25, 1994) to the Tri-City Americans in exchange for a conditional 3rd and 6th round pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
“While we are disappointed Matt did not commit to our program. We felt it was best for both the player and the organization to have a fresh start,” added Chynoweth.
Matt Benning was drafted in the second round (35th overall) of the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft. He played last season with the Spruce Grove Saints of the AJHL (43-0-7-7-65).

August

Summer has finally arrived in the Kootenay's and it's time to start thinking hockey.
The ICE golf tournament is Friday the 26th and there are some open spots. It'll probably be sold out again but get in early and don't miss out.
Training camp will be the following week and it'll be interesting to see which new players are ready to earn one of the openings on the roster.
With rookie Sam Reinhart and newly acquired Dylen McKinlay filling a couple forward spots there are still 2-4 forward openings, 2-3 defenseman spots and maybe a goalie spot available.
I'll have extensive coverage later this month on the radio and blog.
