Montreal Canadiens prospect Tim Bozon is returning to competitive hockey more than four months after spending four weeks in a Saskatchewan hospital while battling a severe form of meningitis.
A 2012 third-round pick (No. 64) of the Canadiens, Bozon will play for France at an Under-23 tournament in Ostrava, Czech Republic that begins July 31.
Bozon, 20, was playing for the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League when he was diagnosed with Neisseria Meningitis on March 1 after a 4-2 win against the Saskatoon Blades. He was taken to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, and spent part of his time there in a medically-induced coma to reduce swelling around his brain.
Since being released from the hospital March 28 Bozon has been working his way back to health. He has been working with Canadiens training staff and began skating June 5. He recently sent a message on Twitter expressing his excitement at playing again.
Bozon, the son of former NHL player Philippe Bozon, was born in St. Louis but grew up playing hockey in Switzerland before coming to North America. He also has French citizenship through his father, who was born in France.
Joining France in the tournament are Dukla Jihlava, a top-division Czech club, plus club teams from Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
In 203 WHL games with the Ice and Kamloops Blazers, Bozon has 105 goals and 231 points.

Reinhart Signs
The Buffalo Sabres today announced that the team has signed forward Sam Reinhart to a three-year, entry level contract.
The second overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Reinhart (6’1”, 190 lbs., 11/6/95) became the Sabres' highest draft pick since the team selected Pierre Turgeon first overall in 1987. He joins the Sabres organization after playing four years in the Western Hockey League (WHL) for the Kootenay Ice.
In addition to serving as Kootenay’s captain in 2013-14, he was named the WHL 2013-14 Player of the Year and Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year.
“We are very excited to have Sam under contract,” said Sabres General Manager Tim Murray. “We look forward to watching him develop and become an important part of our organization in the future.”
In 2013-14, Reinhart led Kootenay with 105 points (36+69) in 60 games, tying for fourth overall in the WHL. He also led his team with 23 points (6+17) in 13 playoff games, advancing three rounds before Kootenay fell to the Portland Winterhawks in the Western Conference Championship.
Through his four seasons with Kootenay and the WHL, the North Vancouver, British Columbia native has recorded 254 points (101+153) in 203 games. Additionally, he captained Canada’s gold medal-winning teams at both the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial and the 2013 Under-18 World Championship.

New WHL Playoff Format
Vancouver, BC - A new playoff format for the Western Hockey League topped the list of items at this year’s WHL Annual General Meeting, which concluded today in Vancouver. The new playoff format, which is identical to the new playoff format introduced by the NHL this past season, was approved by the Board of Governors and will be in place for the next three seasons starting with the 2014-15 season.
“We believe the new format is a hybrid of the WHL’s previous Conference and Divisional formats,” said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “This will allow us to feature our regional rivalries in the playoffs and offer the most fair and competitive path to the WHL Championship.”
The new format will see the top three teams in each Division make up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed teams in each Conference, based on their regular-season record and regardless of Division. It is possible for one Division in each Conference to send five teams to the postseason while the other Division sends just three.
In the First Round, the Division winner with the best record in each Conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the lesser record; the wild card team with the better record will play the other Division winner.
The teams finishing second and third in each Division will meet in the First Round within the bracket headed by their respective division winners. First-round winners within each bracket play one another in the Second Round to determine the four participants in the Conference Finals.
Home-ice advantage through the first two rounds goes to the team that placed higher in the regular-season standings. In the Conference Finals and WHL Championship Series, home-ice advantage goes to the team that had the better regular-season record - regardless of the teams' final standing in their respective Divisions.
In addition, any ties in the final regular season standings will be determined as per WHL Regulations, and if an East Division Club is involved in the WHL Championship Series, the Series will utilize a 2 - 3 - 2 format.
Other matters adopted by the WHL Board of Governors in preparation for the 2014-15 season included the following:
WHL Milestone Awards – the WHL will officially recognize special achievements by the following participants: coaches, players, goaltenders, athletic therapists / trainers and on-ice officials during their careers in the WHL.
WHL Chairman of the Board/ Executive Committee Appointments - Bruce Hamilton has been re-elected as WHL Chairman of the Board for another two year term. No other Chairman of the Board in WHL history has served more years at the helm than Hamilton, who is now entering his seventh term (1998-2004 and 2008-present). Patrick LaForge of the Edmonton Oil Kings (Central Division) and Russ Farwell of the Seattle Thunderbirds (U.S. Division) have also been re-elected to the WHL's Executive Committee for two year terms. Ron Toigo of Vancouver Giants (BC Division) and Gord Broda (East Division) will continue to serve as the other members of the WHL Executive Committee.
The WHL has also announced that the 2014-15 Pre-Season schedule will be released on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, with the 2014-15 Regular Season schedule to follow on Wednesday June 25, 2014.

Canada U-17
CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), announced Tuesday the 96 skaters who have been invited to attend Canada’s national under-17 development camp, July 29 to Aug. 4 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
The roster includes 36 defencemen and 60 forwards.
The players invited to camp were selected by Ryan Jankowski, Hockey Canada's head scout of men's national teams, together with regional scouts Donald Audette (Quebec), Brad McEwen (West), Kevin Mitchell (Atlantic) and Darryl Woodley (Ontario) with input from Hockey Canada regional branch representatives. Players were evaluated throughout the season with their club teams, and at three regional under-16 events: the Western Canada U16 Challenge, OHL Gold Cup and QMJHL Excellence Challenge.
Sixteen under-17 goaltenders have been invited to the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence goaltending camp, June 11-14 in Calgary. From this camp, 12 netminders will be added to the under-17 development camp to complete the roster.
The development camp will serve as part of Canada’s new under-17 structure, focusing on player development. Scouts will continue to watch these players, along with other 1998-born players across the country, and 66 will be selected to represent Canada at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, which is scheduled for Oct. 31 to Nov. 8 in a yet-to-be-determined location. The tournament will be the first to feature three Canadian national teams (Black, Red and White). From 1986 to 2014, Canada was represented by five regional teams: Atlantic, Ontario, Pacific, Quebec and West.
“At Hockey Canada, we are very excited about the possibilities that lie ahead within our national teams with the changes we have instituted at the under-17 level,” said Scott Salmond, senior director, hockey operations with Hockey Canada. “It is our intention to identify potential national team players at an earlier age and have them play together more often.”
All 96 skaters have been drafted or listed by CHL teams, including 35 from the Ontario Hockey League, 32 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and 29 from the Western Hockey League.

Reinhart East Nominee For Player Of The Year
Calgary, AB - The Western Hockey League today announced the WHL Eastern and Western Conference finalists for the 2013-14 WHL Player of the Year. The two finalists for WHL Player of the Year are determined through voting by general managers, coaches, broadcast and media representatives of all WHL Member Clubs. The recipients of all WHL individual awards will be announced at the 2014 WHL Awards Luncheon, which will be held in Calgary, Alberta, on Wednesday, April 30, 2014.
In the WHL's Eastern Conference, which includes the East and Central Divisions, the Player of the Year nominee is forward Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice. In the WHL’s Western Conference, which includes the B.C. and U.S. Divisions, the Player of the Year nominee is forward Mitch Holmberg of the Spokane Chiefs.
18-year-old Vancouver, B.C., native Sam Reinhart was a dominant player for the Kootenay Ice during the 2013-14 WHL regular season, leading the Ice to a 39-28-2-3 record and a fifth-place finish in the Eastern Conference while helping the Club set a new WHL record with their 15th consecutive campaign with a record of .500 or better. The Ice’s captain, Reinhart scored 36 goals and 69 assists for 105 points along with a +24 rating in 60 games.
Reinhart’s 105 points tied him for fourth in WHL scoring while his 69 assists placed him second among all WHL players and established a new Kootenay Ice record for assists in a single season. In addition, Reinhart led the Ice with six game-winning goals and two shorthanded goals. Reinhart’s consistency during the 2013-14 regular season was remarkable as he was held off the score sheet just nine times, was only held without a point in back-to-back games once, and enjoyed a WHL-best 22-game point streak. Reinhart’s importance to Kootenay’s success this season is evident in the fact that he factored in on 45% of his team’s entire offensive output, and that the Ice lost all nine games in which he dressed but failed to register a point.
Selected by Kootenay in the first round, 15th overall, in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Reinhart has played 203 career regular-season games for the Ice, amassing 101 goals and 254 points with a +52 rating. The 2011-12 WHL Rookie of the Year, Reinhart is considered a top prospect for the 2014 NHL Draft.
Holmberg, a product of Sherwood Park, AB, enjoyed an outstanding 2013-14 season for the Spokane Chiefs, helping the team to a 40-26-3-3 record and a sixth-place finish in the Western Conference as they clinched a playoff berth for an eighth straight year. The 20-year-old scored 62 goals and 56 assists for 118 points to go with a +35 rating while appearing in all 72 games for the Chiefs.
Holmberg’s 62 goals and 118 points led all WHL players, allowing him to become the first member of the Chiefs to win the WHL scoring title since Ray Whitney in 1990-91. In addition, Holmberg led all WHL players with 23 power play goals and 10 game-winning goals, and finished tied for second among WHL players with six shorthanded goals. Holmberg finished with 12 more goals than his nearest competitor, and is only the second WHL player since the 2000-01 season to reach the 60-goal mark during a season. Holmberg contributions to Spokane’s strong campaign cannot be understated as the 5’10”, 175-lb winger scored over 25% of his Club’s goals while also factoring in on over 48% of the Club’s entire offensive output. In his fifth and final WHL campaign, Holmberg established a new Spokane Chiefs’ franchise record for career goals with 147.
The Chiefs’ first-round pick, 21st overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, Holmberg has appeared in 314 career regular-season games, amassing 296 points along with a +62 rating. Holmberg is a free agent.
