Allan Cup

Cranbrook Native and former ICE defenseman Donny Lloyd and ICE alumni Gerard Dicaire and Clayton Pool have won the championship with the Fort St John Flyers.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – For the first time ever, the Fort St. John Flyers have won the Allan Cup, Canada’s National Senior Championship. The Flyers earned the 102nd national title with a 3-1 win over the Bentley Generals on Saturday afternoon at North Peace Arena.

Todd Alexander, Chris Stevens, Ryan Carter and Rod Stevens scored for the Flyers, who led 1-0 after one period and 2-0 after two. Scott Hood scored the lone goal for Bentley, cutting Fort St. John’s lead to 2-1 midway through the third period before Carter added an insurance marker at 17:04 of the final frame and Stevens rounded out the scoring into an empty net in the dying seconds.

Fort St. John went through the tournament undefeated, beating Bentley 7-1 and the Clarenville Caribous 6-3 during round-robin play, and knocking off the South East Prairie Thunder, last year’s runners-up, 7-3 in Friday’s semifinal.

The Generals, who reached their third-consecutive national championship game and were looking to become the first team since the 1993-95 Warroad Lakers to win back-to-back Allan Cups, finished second behind Fort St. John in round-robin action (7-1 loss to Fort St. John, 7-2 win over Clarenville) before beating the Powell River Regals 5-1 in the quarter-finals and the Dundas Real McCoys 4-2 in their semifinal.

The Flyers became the ninth host team to win the Allan Cup since the tournament went to a round-robin format in 1992, the first since the Brantford Blast in 2008. The national title is the 12th all-time for British Columbia, second only to Ontario’s 48. The last B.C. team to win the Allan Cup was the Powell River Regals in 2006.

The Allan Cup is one of the oldest club-team hockey competitions in North America, having been first competed for in 1908. Only once in the past 103 years, in 1945, has an Allan Cup champion not been crowned.

Kenora, Ont. will host the 2011 Allan Cup in April 2011.

Oil Kings Make Change

http://www.oilkings.ca/oil-kings-announce-coaching-change-p142213

Edmonton, AB - Edmonton Oil Kings General Manager Bob Green today announced a change in leadership of Edmonton’s WHL franchise. Head Coach Steve Pleau and Assistant Coach Rocky Thompson will not return to their positions behind the Oil Kings bench for next season and will be leaving the organization.

“These are always the most difficult decisions, particularly when they involve people you respect and work very closely with,” said Bob Green. “Steve and Rocky worked very hard over the past three years and they first and foremost should be thanked for their hard work and the time they dedicated to the Kings. However I feel we need to make a change prior to heading into next season.”

Pleau has been with the team since its reinsertion to the WHL in 2007-2008. Pleau guided the team to an overall record of 67-116-12-21 including a berth in the playoffs in just their second season in the league.

Thompson has also been with the team since 2007-2008. The former WHL player was in his first coaching assignment following his transition from playing professional hockey in the National Hockey League and American Hockey League.

Green, who is attending the 2010 IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championship in Belarus, will begin the process of hiring a new coaching staff upon his return to Edmonton.

Edmonton will play host to the 2010 WHL Awards on April 28, and WHL Bantam Draft on April 29. Both events will be held at the Fantasyland Hotel at West Edmonton Mall.

10 Things I Think I Think

1. I think the ICE have room for only 4 new players next year. They usually have 22 players on the roster and with the departures of Dustin Sylvester, Ryan Molle, Dominik Pacovsky and one of the potential overagers Todd Mathews/Matt Fraser/Steele Boomer/Kevin King, that leaves 4 openings. If the club drafts 2 Import players who make the roster that leaves 2 openings.
2. I think Brandon is the favorite in the East Final against Calgary. The Wheat Kings won the season series 3-1 with 2 of the wins in Calgary after the trade deadline. Calgary won 4-3 in Brandon in an overtime shootout October 7th. November 20th Brandon won at home 4-2. January 29th in Calgary it was Brandon winning 6-3 and then February 13th Brandon won 4-2 in the Saddledome.
3. I think Tri City will be the favorite in the West Final. The Americans were 4-0 vs Vancouver and 8-2 vs Portland.
4. I think there could be a few WHL trades in the next few weeks leading up to the Bantam Draft. Teams still in the playoffs won't be trading there active players obviously, but in the last few years teams have made moves involving Bantam picks.
5. I think if the Calgary Flames make any management changes Hitmen GM Kelly Kisio should receive consideration. The Hitmen are owned by the NHL team. The Hitmen are in the East Final for the 4th consecutive year. The Hitmen have made great picks in the Bantam draft but here is a list of players acquired in trades the last 5 years ... Michael Fisenko, Zak Stebner, Jimmy Bubnick, Giffen Nyren, Kris Foucault, Del Cowan, Joel Broda, Tyler Shattock, Paul Postma, Kyle Bortis, Tomas Karpov, Dan Mercer, Brock Nixon, Ian Duval, Ryan Gillen, Dylan Yeo, Eric Frere, Derek LeBlanc, Ryan Gillen, Justin Pogge, Brett Carson, Kris Deines, Michael Reich and Craig Linekar.
6. I think in the NHL East the first round winners will be Washington, New Jersey, Buffalo and Pittsburgh (although will be cheering for Ottawa).
7. I think in the NHL West the teams advancing will be San Jose, Chicago, Los Angeles and Detroit.
8. I think eventually I have a Washington/Chicago Final.
9. I think the new baseball park for the Twins looks great. They may regret not having a retractable roof in Minnesota but there is nothing like a wide open baseball park.
10. I think I'm tired of trying to get my satellite supplier to get the MLB Network channel. We have NHL Center ICE and the NFL Network, but not the baseball channel.

Switzerland 3 Canada 1 U-18 Game #1

For the first time in the U-18 tournament history Canada has lost to Switzerland.
In the first round robin game for both teams the Swiss won 3-1.
Moose Jaw's Quinton Howden scored the goal with Tegina's Jordan Weal getting the assist.
Seattle's Calvin Pickard made 30 saves.
Thursday Canada meets Belarus.
ICE forward Max Reinhart is on Team Canada.

Finland 5 Canada 4 U-18 Exhibition

ICE forward Max Reinhart is on Team Canada

MINSK, Belarus – John McFarland (Sudbury, OHL) scored a hat trick to pace the Canadian offence, but it wasn’t enough as Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team fell 5-4 to Finland in exhibition action on Friday night at the Minsk Ice Palace.

The game was Canada’s lone pre-tournament contest before opening the 2010 IIHF World Under-18 Championship next Tuesday against Switzerland in Bobruisk, located 138 km from Minsk. Canada is looking to improve on its fourth-place finish from the 2009 U18 Worlds in the U.S.

The Finns jumped out to a quick start, striking just 46 seconds after the opening face-off for an early 1-0 lead. But McFarland, one of three returning Canadians from the 2008 world championship, got Canada back on even terms less than five minutes later, scoring shorthanded.

The second period was a parade to the penalty box, as the two teams combined for 24 minutes in penalties in the middle frame. The Finns used an early power play to regain a one-goal lead thanks to Petteri Halinen, and pushed it to 3-1 when Teemu Pulkkinen beat Calvin Pickard (Seattle, WHL) at the five-minute mark.

McFarland notched his second of the game with two minutes left in the second period, but the Finns restored their two-goal lead before the buzzer sounded on Halinen’s second goal of the period.

Outshot 24-22 through two periods, the Canadians fell into a three-goal hole early in the third period when Mikael Salmivirta beat Kent Simpson (Everett, WHL) – who had replaced Pickard midway through the second period – to make it 5-2.

But the Canadians fought back, getting goals from Ryan Spooner (Peterborough, OHL), at 10:47, and McFarland, who wrapped up his hat trick at 14:42 to make it a one-goal game at 5-4. Despite outshooting the Finns 15-10 in the final 20 minutes Canada could not get the tying goal past Finnish goaltender Jonathan Iilhati, falling short in its comeback attempt.

Ryan Murray (Everett, WHL) added two assists for Canada, which outshot Finland 37-34 overall.

10 Things I Think I Think

1. I think the Kootenay ICE have 20 players eligible to return next season. At most 18 can play for the team as 5 will be 20-years old.
Possible Over-agers - Todd Mathews, Matt Fraser, Steele Boomer, Kevin King, Dominik Pacovsky.
Pacovsky will stay in the Czech Rep and play pro next season.
That leaves the ICE one decison for over-agers.
Goalies (2) - Todd Mathews 20, Nathan Lieuwen 19.
Defense (6) - Hayden Rintoul 19, Brayden McNabb 19, James Martin 19, Luke Paulsen 18Joey Leach 18, Jagger Dirk 17.
Forwards (11) - Matt Fraser 20, Steele Boomer 20, Kevin King 20, Jesse Ismond 19, Joe Antilla 19, Christian Magnus 18, Elgin Pearce 18, Drew Czerwonka 18, Max Reinhart 18, Brock Montgomery 18, Brendan Hurley 17.
2. I think it'll be one of the most important WHL Bantam Drafts ever for the ICE as they have 7 picks in the 1st 4 rounds. It's supposed to be a strong, deep draft with Alberta prospects leading the way. The draft will happen in 3 weeks.
3. I think my prediction for the WHL playoffs was Brandon in the East and the winner of the Spokane/Portland series in the West. So far it's still possible.
4. I think it was about time that defenseman Joey Leach was rated in the NHL Central Scouting rankings. He joins Max Reinhart and Brock Montgomery in the final rankings. NHL teams were hoping to keep Leach as secret and snare him in the middle rounds.
5. I think I better get involved in an NHL playoff draft or else I will have no interest at all. I'm not sure if it was the Olympics but there doesn't seem to be the buzz for the upcoming NHL post season. 1st round is always the best.
6. I think it's interesting to see the most hated teams in their sport winning championships in the past year. Yankees, Lakers and Duke are probably wondering what happened to the Cowboys and Canadiens.
7. I think I'm excited to have selected Jason Heyward in my baseball draft. The rookie outfielder from the Atlanta Braves hit a 3-run home in his first at bat. It has to be good when you are being compared to Albert Pujols and Ken Griffey Jr.
8. I think my 2 predictions for the NFL Draft are Sam Bradford 1st overall and Tim Tebow will be taken in the 2nd round.
9. I think after watching the Masters this weekend I will go and get new clubs next week. My top 7 are Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Chad Campbell and Hunter Mahan.
10. I think my biggest complaint for the new Tiger Nike ad is the fact he doesn't want to talk about what happened in his personal life but will use it in an advertising campaign. I don't think he owes the public an apology or an explanation. That should be kept in the family. But once you use it in a commercial it opens up the chance for the media to ask questions about it again. I just want to watch him play golf.

Holick to California Again

The Western Hockey League will be hosting the fifth annual WHL U.S. Prospects Camp in Anaheim, California at the Anaheim Ice facility from April 9-11, 2010.

The WHL U.S. Prospects Camp provides a unique opportunity for U.S. born hockey players to participate with other top ranked 1995 born players in the only evaluation camp conducted by the Western Hockey League in southern California this season. The WHL is the largest Major Junior Hockey League in North America and is a leading supplier of player talent to the National Hockey League. Virtually all of our WHL 22 Member Clubs will have scouts in attendance to evaluate player’s ability to play in one of the world’s finest development League for junior aged players.

“The WHL U.S. Prospects Camp provides our WHL Clubs the opportunity to evaluate top prospects from the Western Unites States who are eligible for this year’s WHL Bantam Draft,” commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison, “More U.S. players each year are playing in the WHL and it is important we give these young prospects every opportunity to learn more about the benefits of playing in the Western Hockey League.”

The WHL U.S. Prospects Camp is open only to U.S. Residents born in 1995, who live in the Western United States (all U.S. States west of the Mississippi River and Alaska).

WHL Head Coaches Bruno Campese ( Prince Albert Raiders), Dean Clark (Prince George Cougars), Mark Holick (Kootenay ICE) and Rich Preston ( Lethbridge Hurricanes) will each coach one of the four teams throughout the weekend camp. Current California born WHL players Tyler Maxwell (Manhattan Beach, CA/Everett Silvertips), Colin Redden (Corona Del Mar, CA/Prince Albert Raiders), Parker Stanfield (Orange County, CA/Prince George Cougars) and CJ Stretch (Irvine, CA/Kamloops Blazers) will also be in Anaheim throughout the camp assisting the head coaches with their respective teams.

3 ICE in NHL CSS Final Rankings

The NHL Central Scouting Services have released their final rankings. 3 Kootenay ICE players are rated in the North American Skaters category. Max Reinhart is rated 79th, Joey Leach is 120th and Brock Montgomery is rated 128th.
The NHL Draft will be held in June.

Reinhart on Team Canada

CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) announced on Sunday the 22 players that will comprise Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team at the 2009 IIHF World Under-18 Championship set for April 13-23 in Minsk and Bobruisk, Belarus.

The roster is comprised of players born in 1992 or earlier whose teams are no longer competing in the CHL playoffs with their respective club teams. Many of Canada’s players named today will be among the top selections at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles, Calif. in June.

Canada’s coaching staff – head coach Guy Carbonneau and assistant coaches George Burnett and Rob Sumner – collaborated with Brad Pascall, Hockey Canada’s Senior Director of Men’s National Teams, Shawn Bullock, Hockey Canada’s Manager of Manager of Men’s National Teams and Al Murray, Hockey Canada’s head scout for men’s national teams, to finalize the roster. Murray has been traveling across Canada evaluating and ranking players as part of his duties.

“As a coaching staff we are looking forward to getting together with the players we have chosen and working towards our goal of a gold medal for Canada,” said Carbonneau. “A number of these players have previous international experience, and that will prove invaluable in Belarus.”

Canada’s roster includes 13 players from the Ontario Hockey League, seven (7) players from the Western Hockey League and two (2) players from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Eleven (11) players helped Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team capture the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament in August 2009 in the Czech Republic, and three (3) (Connolly, Gudbranson, McFarland) represented Canada at the 2009 IIHF World Under-18 Championship as underage players.

Canada’s roster also includes 19 players who took part in the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Port Alberni, B.C., including 10 members of the gold medal-winning team from Ontario, and one player (Murray) who competed at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Timmins, Ont.

Canada is a two-time champion at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship, earning gold in 2003 and 2008. It finished fourth at the 2009 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Fargo, N.D. and Moorhead, Minn.

The team will convene in Toronto, Ont. on Monday, April 5, before flying to Europe on April 6. There will not be any on-ice sessions prior to arriving in Europe. Prior to the World Championship, Canada will play one exhibition game on April 9, vs. Finland in Minsk, Belarus at 5 p.m. (Local time)/ 10 a.m. (Eastern).

The 2010 IIHF World Under-18 Championship opens for Canada on April 13 in Bobruisk when it takes on Switzerland. The Canadians will also face Belarus, Sweden and the United States in the preliminary round.

TSN/RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, will broadcast Canada’s final preliminary round game against Sweden on Sunday, April 18, as well as a quarter-final on Tuesday, April 20, a semifinal on Wednesday, April 21 and the gold medal game on Friday, April 23. The bronze medal game on April 23 will also be broadcast if Canada plays for bronze. Check your local listings for game times in your area.
