The Kootenay ICE will host Vancouver tonight in their 1st and only meeting of the season.
Last year in Vancouver the ICE won 6-2.
The last meeting in Cranbrook was January 9, 2009 and the Giants won 3-1.

ICE Crowd
Update from the ICE Office, over 2900 has been sold for tomorrow's game vs Vancouver. It'll be the biggest crowd of the season.

ICE Update
The ICE have 2 days of practice as they will host Vancouver on Saturday. 2,750 tickets have already be sold so we could be on the way to the biggest crowd of the season. The largest attendance this season was December 28th vs Medicine Hat with 2,843.
16-year old defenseman Mike Simpson and 16-year-old forward Levi Cable have returned to their clubs after each playing 4 games.
Both players got lots of playing time and showed they are ready to make the team next season.
Nathan Lieuwen is probable after leaving the game in the 3rd period on Tuesday. He is out will neck/back spasms.
With Joey Leach (ankle 3-4 weeks) and Luke Paulsen (concussion 1-2 weeks) unavailable the ICE have added 16-year old defenseman Jeff Hubic to play in the next 4 games. Hubic was a 4th round pick in the 2009 Bantam Draft and plays Sask AAA Midget Tisdale 35 GP 1-5-6 50pm.
With Hubic the ICE have 6 defenseman available.
James Martin left last night's game for a long stretch after suffering a cut on his foot. A Hitmen players' skate cut through the tounge of his skate and got through the skin as well and he needed a few stitches. He returned in the 3rd period.

Calgary, Alb – The Calgary Hitmen scored 2 1st period goals on their way to a 3-1 over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Wednesday night. So far the biggest crowd was on December 28th with 2,843 vs Medicine Hat.
ICE lone goal came late in the 2nd period as Kevin King from the corner fed Matt Fraser in the slot and he scored with a wrist shot high on the stick side.

Kootenay 8 Calgary 0 Game #52
Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE forward Cody Eakin had 2 goals and 3 assists in an 8-0 over the Calgary Hitmen in WHL action on Tuesday night.
ICE opened the scoring as Hayden Rintoul’s point shot was stopped but the rebound was banged in by Jesse Ismond.
ICE made it 2-0 while shorthanded as Cody Eakin stole the puck at the blueline and turned around on a breakaway and scored with a wrist shot high on the glove side.
On the powerplay the ICE made it 3-0 as Brayden McNabb scored with a high wrist shot from the blueline that beat the screened goalie.
McNabb has tied Steve McCarthy for most ICE career goals by a defenseman with 43.

ICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE enter this week’s action with a 32-16-1-2 record (17-6-1-1 at home, 15-10-0-1 on the road, 1-1 in overtime, 3-2 in shootouts) and in third place in the EASTERN CONFERENCE and sixth in the WHL…The ICE will play eight games at home and four on the road during the month of February.

Kootenay 4 Lethbridge 3 OT Game #51
Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE forward Elgin Pearce scored at 3:21 of overtime in a 4-3 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes in WHL action on Saturday night.
ICE opened the scoring as defenseman John Neibrandt put the puck towards the Lethbridge net where Drew Czerwonka picked it up and scored with a backhand shot.
ICE took a 2-0 lead on the powerplay as Jesse Ismond fed Max Reinhart in the slot and he scored his team leading 26th on his own rebound.
In the 2nd period the ICE took a 3-0 lead as Kevin King created a 2-on-1 by busting through defenders in the neutral zone and fed defenseman James Martin near the crease who scored on a one time shot.
1:07 later the Hurricanes Max Ross was alone in the middle slot and scored with a wrist shot on the glove side.
Lethbridge got within a goal late in the 2nd period as defenseman Reid Jackson scored from the corner boards that squeaked through the goalie at the near post.
In the 3rd period the Hurricanes tied the game on a goal mouth scramble and Mitch Maxwell was there to get it into the net.
In overtime Elgin Pearce stopped Brody Sutter from scoring the winning goal with a scramble near the ICE net and then went on a 2-on-1 break with Max Reinhart. Reinhart barged through the defender to create a 2-on-1 near the net and fed Pearce who scored with a one time shot high on the stick side.
ICE goalie Mackenzie Skapski made his 1st WHL start.
ICE will host Calgary on Tuesday.

ICE Update
The ICE have called up 16-year-old defenseman Mike Simpson for the weekend. (PIJHL Delta/Port Moody 33 GP 3-6-9 81pm)
Luke Paulsen is out 1-2 weeks with a concussion. Paulsen left in the 1st period of yesterday's game.
Goalie Mackenzie Skapski is scheduled to make his 1st start on Saturday.
The ICE will not see former teammate Cason Machacek who received a 5-game suspension for his actions Wednesday in Red Deer.

Cranbrook, BC – Brandon Wheat Kings Brendan Walker scored a hat-trick in a 5-4 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Wednesday night.
Brandon opened the scoring on the powerplay on a turnover at the ICE blueline and David Toews dropped a pass in the slot to Brendan Walker who scored with a wrist shot high on the stick side.
45-seconds later the ICE tied the game as Joe Antilla was alone in front of the net to banged in a rebound through the goalies legs.
ICE took a 2-1 lead as defenseman Brayden McNabb wristed a shot from the blueline that beat the screened the goalie high on the stick side.
48-seconds later Brandon tied the game as Brendan Walker got his 2nd of the game as he scored on a long shot that squirted through the goalie.
Brandon took a 3-2 lead early in the 3rd as Brenden Walker got the hat-trick with another turnover at the ICE blueline and his wrist shot beat the goalie high on the glove side.
Wheat Kings took a 4-2 lead on a 3-on-1 break while shorthanded and Scott Glennie finished the play with a forehand deke.

New Baseball Franchise to be named 'Cranbrook Eds'
East Kootenay - The Home Run Society has taken the WMBL's conditional franchise to the next level, and today announced it's team name - 'the Cranbrook Eds'. The event held at McDonald's Restaurant, was highlighted by the unveiling of the logo that will be used in it's future marketing. The logo features a mascot style elephant holding a baseball bat in its trunk, wearing a vintage baseball cap circa 1926 when the story of 'Cranbrook Ed' unfolded.
'Ed' was one of the many circus elephants that escaped from the Sells Floto travelling circus that was passing through Cranbrook in 1926. Most of the elephants were caught soon after escaping, but 'Ed' remained elusive for weeks, finally being tracked and captured by Ktunaxa guides. The lost elephant story put Cranbrook on news headlines around the world, and left the region buzzing with excitement. The Sells Floto circus felt it only appropriate to re-name the elephant 'Cranbrook Ed' to honour the citizens who had supported their long effort to capture him.
"The story of the lost elephant was very compelling to our group, and we have been working on this marketing concept for a few years," said Garry Slonowski, President of the Home Run Society. "We felt that we wanted a concept that was unique in the sports marketing world, tied into local history, and reflected the long and storied past that baseball has in our region. We hope that over time, the community will embrace the Cranbrook Eds concept, and it will become an icon of our community."
"We also felt the need to move the concept forward at this time in order to help people envision what we are trying to bring to our community," continued Slonowski. "The WMBL is an established league, a high calibre of baseball, and great family entertainment. We believe this will be a wonderful addition to the activities that are available in our region during the summer months."

The biggest barrier still facing Cranbrook is a WMBL-ready stadium. However, the Home Run Society has been working towards achieving this goal for a number of years, and is in the final stages of completing a feasibility study for a new baseball stadium.
The study, funded by the Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Program, contracted GEC Architecture to design a scalable facility that would meet the needs of the City and Region for many years to come. GEC Architecture is well known for recreational facility design, with past achievements including the Olympic Saddledome in Calgary. The completed feasibility study is scheduled to be presented at the Monday February 7th City Council meeting, and will be released to the public shortly after.

East Kootenay - The Home Run Society has taken the WMBL's conditional franchise to the next level, and today announced it's team name - 'the Cranbrook Eds'. The event held at McDonald's Restaurant, was highlighted by the unveiling of the logo that will be used in it's future marketing. The logo features a mascot style elephant holding a baseball bat in its trunk, wearing a vintage baseball cap circa 1926 when the story of 'Cranbrook Ed' unfolded.
'Ed' was one of the many circus elephants that escaped from the Sells Floto travelling circus that was passing through Cranbrook in 1926. Most of the elephants were caught soon after escaping, but 'Ed' remained elusive for weeks, finally being tracked and captured by Ktunaxa guides. Red Deer 6 Kootenay 4 Game #48
Cranbrook, BC – Red Deer forward John Persson scored 3 goals and Andrej Kudrna had 2 goals and 3 assists in a 6-4 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Sunday night.
ICE opened the scoring as Max Reinhart’s backhand shot was stopped by the goalies’ shoulder and the rebound was in the crease and defenseman Brayden Mcnabb was there to push it across the line.
Rebels got a powerplay and tied the game as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fed John Persson at the back door and he scored with a quick shot.
ICE regained the lead 2-1 as Jagger Dirk bounced one in from the top of the circle that seem to suprise the goalie.
Rebels tied the game late in the 2nd period on a powerplay as the point shot that missed the net came out the other side to Andrej Kudrna who had time to tuck the puck around the post.
Rebels took a 3-2 lead on a 2-man advantage powerplay as John Persson received another back door pass from Ryan Nugent Nugent-Hopkins.
On another powerplay the Rebels took a 4-2 lead as Andrek Kudrna scored from the corner that beat the goalie high on the glove side.
ICE got back within a goal on a 3-on-2 break as Kevin King was left alone in front of the net and scored on wrist shot high on the stick side.
John Persson completed the hat-trick with a long wrist shot from the top of the slot.
ICE pulled their goalie and got back within a goal again as Cody Eakin stepped into a one-time shot from the top of the right circle that beat the screened goalie.
Rebels ended the scoring as Brett Ferguson scored into an empty net.
Rebels came into the game on a 7-game winning streak and had outscored the opposition 31-6 during the streak.
Red Deer is in 1st place in the Central Division and Kootenay is 2nd.
ICE will host Brandon on Wednesday.

ICE Add 2
Next week the ICE will have 2 prospects joining the team.
Goalie Mackenzie Skapski (PIJHL Ridge Meadows 19 GP 6-9-0 4.26 .896% 1 SO) and forward Levi Cable (Sask AAA Midget Yorkton 34 GP 23-22-45 20pm) will be in Cranbrook early next week.
Because of injuries, Cable should suit-up for a few games.
Skapski is expected to get a start in one of the games next weekend.
Leach, a draft pick by the Flames, will go to Calgary next week to have surgery on the ankle to remove a broken bone. Recovery time should be at least 4 weeks.

The Kootenay ICE are in Spokane tonight.
It's the 4th meeting of the season and the home team has won every game and the ICE lead the season series 2-1.
The ICE are coming off a 4-3 win over Edmonton on Tuesday and are tied with Red Deer for 1st in the Central Division and 2nd in the East Conference.
Spokane has won 10 of their last 11 games and are tied with Portland for 1st in the U.S. Division and in the West Conference.

ICE Update
Cody Eakin will make his ICE debut this weekend.
He'll centre one of the top 2 lines.
The ICE will probably still be 2 players short of a complete line-up as Matt Fraser is questionable after being kneed in the head on Tuesday.
Luke Paulsen (head), Joey Leach (ankle 6-8 weeks) and Steele Boomer (ankle 4-6 weeks) are also sidelined.

Kootenay 4 Edmonton 3 Game #46
Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE forwards Jesse Ismond and Matt Fraser each had 1 goal and 1 assist in a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings in WHL action on Tuesday night.
ICE opened the scoring as Jesse Ismond broke an 18-game goalless streak while falling down in the high slot and his wrist shot beat the goalie high on the glove side. His last goal was November 27th in Everett.
Late in the period the ICE made it 2-0 as defenseman Hayden Rintoul’s point shot was stopped and Matt Fraser found the big rebound and had an open side to get the goal.
In the 2nd period the ICE scored 2 goals 2:09 apart to make the score 4-0.
Drew Czerwonka’s body check on an Edmonton defenseman created a 3-on-1 break and a pretty passing play left Max Reinhart with an open net for his team leading 24th on a feed from Matt Fraser.
Skating 4-on-4 the ICE went another 3-on-1 break and defenseman Brayden McNabb was near the crease to finish off the play on a perfect feed from Kevin King.
Oil Kings changed goalies as Laurent Brossoit replaced Jon Groenheyde.
Oi Kings scored late in the 2nd period on a 2-on-1 break and Dylan Wruck got the eventual breakaway and scored his team leading 24th.
Matt Fraser left the game in the 2nd period after being taking a knee to the side of the head.
Early in the 3rd period Oil Kings scored on the powerplay as Dylan Wruck had an open net on rebound in front of the net.

ICE Injury Update
The ICE suffered some major injuries at the outdoor game.
Joey Leach will be out six to eight weeks with an ankle injury.
Steele Boomer will be out four to six weeks with an ankle injury.
Luke Paulsen is day to day with a head injury.
Cody Eakin is expected to return from his hand injury on the weekend.

Outdoor Thoughts
The Kootenay ICE were involved in history on Saturday as they played in Spokane in the 1st ever WHL Outdoor Game.
The ICE will remember it for all the wrong reasons as they lost 11-2.
Elgin Pearce and Joe Antilla had the ICE goals.
It seemed like the ICE were trying to enjoy the novelty of the Outdoor Game and still try to treat it like a regular game. Before the game was 13 minutes old they were down 4-0.
It's debatable how much the Chiefs benefited from having a practice on the outdoor rink on Thursday. You have to think the ICE would have been more prepared with at least 1 practice. Especially the goalies who seem to struggle to see the puck and how to play their angles.
How strange was it to see the players with eye black?
How much were the Chiefs distracted during Friday's game in Cranbrook knowing what was happening on Saturday?
The 9-goal margin was the 2nd worst for the club since they moved to Cranbrook. On March 12th 1999 they lost 11-0 in Brandon.
Luke Paulsen left the game after getting elbowed in the head and Joey Leach left the game with a sore foot after blocking a shot.
The ICE did not score a powerplay goal and that ended their streak at 13 consecutive games with a PPG.
My thanx to Spokane's Jay Stewart who all week long made sure my broadcast booth had everything I needed. The former Chiefs play-by-play announcer has been on the office staff since leaving the radio gig and knows what us announcers require.
During the game he kept me up to date with the goals, assists and penalties with hand written notes. He knew the PA announcements were impossible to understand in the radio booth.
Plus he did all this will wearing a Tuxedo.
Also, thanx to our Off The Net feature where I receive emails during the broadcast, I was made aware that the Shaw broadcast was not working.
No one from the WHL or TV staff let me know any details to help with your inquiries.
Again, Jay Stewart found the information I needed and said there was a satellite link problem.
After the broadcast was done, I saw a WHL press release saying it would be re-broadcast later. I felt bad I didn't have the information earlier.
Why wouldn't the TV people think to let us know the information? One Shaw TV person before the game said "Have fun with your broadcast. No one will be listening as this game is on Shaw TV, ha ha ha." I took the comment as a light hearted joke with no ill intent as I'm sure was intended. But, Saturday was a reminder of the power of radio.
Overall a busy weekend as we did over 20 interviews for the 2 games.
During the weekend the teams combined for 21 goals and 12 fights.
The ICE will remember it for all the wrong reasons as they lost 11-2.
Elgin Pearce and Joe Antilla had the ICE goals.
It seemed like the ICE were trying to enjoy the novelty of the Outdoor Game and still try to treat it like a regular game. Before the game was 13 minutes old they were down 4-0.
It's debatable how much the Chiefs benefited from having a practice on the outdoor rink on Thursday. You have to think the ICE would have been more prepared with at least 1 practice. Especially the goalies who seem to struggle to see the puck and how to play their angles.

Kootenay 6 Spokane 2 Game #44
Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE forwards Matt Fraser and Max Reinhart each had 1 goal and 2 assists, while defenseman Brayden McNabb had 3 assists in 6-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs in WHL action on Friday night.
The game was delayed by close to an hour with the late arrival of the Spokane Chiefs because of bad road conditions.
ICE set a Franchise Record for fastest 2 goals scored by 2 different ICE players in scoring 2 goals 11-seconds apart. (April 2, 2000 Jason Jaffray and Brad Tutschek in Red Deer)
ICE defenseman Brayden McNabb at the left point did a slap pass to the bottom right circle and Joe Antilla had a wide open net on a one time shot.
Off the next faceoff ICE forward Matt Fraser stepped into a slap shot at the blue and the big rebound was found by Max Reinhart who got his team leading 23rd of the season.
Spokane’s Tyler Johnson hit the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 break and scored with a wrist shot high on the glove side. Johnson leads the WHL with 32 goals.
In the 2nd period the ICE scored on a 2-man advantage as Kevin King got a loose puck near the top of the crease and chipped it into the empty net.
2 1/2 minutes later Kevin King received a slap pass from Brayden McNabb as scored on a one-time shot.
King has reached the 20-goal mark for the 3rd time in his career.
Spokane replied on the powerplay as Steve Kuhn pounced on a free puck in the crease and chipped it in.
In the 3rd period the ICE made the scored 5-2 on the powerplay as Matt Fraser went in on a breakaway and scored on a backhand deke.
The ICE scored their 3rd powerplay goal as Joey Leach’s high point shot was deflected by Steele Boomer.

WHL Outdoor Game Update
The first outdoor game in Western Hockey League history is just around the corner as the Spokane Chiefs get ready to host the Kootenay Ice for the Rockstar Outdoor Hockey Classic at Avista Stadium in Spokane, WA, on Saturday, January 15th.
Preparations are underway at Avista Stadium, the home of the Spokane Indians baseball Club, for Saturday’s contest, and players from the Chiefs and Ice are beginning to get excited to take part in what will be an historic event for the WHL and the two Clubs.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Chiefs’ veteran captain Tyler Johnson. “Watching (the rink) get built at the stadium, you get the jitters thinking about getting out there on Saturday.
“Our whole team is pretty excited,” he said.
Staging the first-ever outdoor WHL game is an historic moment for the Spokane Chiefs and the Spokane community. Chiefs’ general manager Tim Speltz says the buzz in the Spokane community is growing as work continues in preparation for Saturday’s game.
“It’s been a really exciting process, and it’s been everything we’ve hoped for,” said Speltz, who has put together two Memorial Cup Championship teams in his time in Spokane. “We’ve had great support and interest from the community, and we’ve had great support from the media.
“This event means a lot to the Spokane Chiefs hockey club, and it’s going to be really great for our fans and everyone in the Spokane community,” he said.
Adding to the excitement is the fact that Saturday’s contest features two of the WHL’s top teams in Spokane and Kootenay.
The Chiefs are the highest scoring team in the WHL, and currently find themselves among the top teams in the Western Conference, while the perennially-strong Ice find themselves among the Eastern Conference’s elite. Saturday’s meeting will be the second of back-to-back encounters between the teams after they meet up in Cranbrook, B.C., on Friday night.
“All the boys are pretty excited to play in the first outdoor game in the WHL,” said veteran Kootenay defenseman Brayden McNabb. “Spokane has a really good team this season, and we are looking forward to seeing how we stack up against them.
“At this point in the season, points matter a lot in the standings, and there are two points available from this game, too,” he added.
Playing the game in the open-aired Avista Stadium, both teams know they should be prepared for anything Mother Nature can throw at them.
One only has to look at the history of outdoor games in the NHL to see the role that weather plays in the whole experience. From bitter cold to heavy snow to rain, as was seen at this year’s Heritage Classic in Pittsburgh, the players all know they have to be ready to deal with conditions they would never face in an arena.
“We’ve heard a lot of different forecasts for what the weather is going to be like,” said Johnson. “I’ve heard we can expect anything from snow to thunderstorms to windy conditions to calm conditions.
“Both teams will have to face the same conditions, so there won’t be any advantage or disadvantage for either team,” he said.

Preparations are underway at Avista Stadium, the home of the Spokane Indians baseball Club, for Saturday’s contest, and players from the Chiefs and Ice are beginning to get excited to take part in what will be an historic event for the WHL and the two Clubs.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Chiefs’ veteran captain Tyler Johnson. “Watching (the rink) get built at the stadium, you get the jitters thinking about getting out there on Saturday.
“Our whole team is pretty excited,” he said.
Staging the first-ever outdoor WHL game is an historic moment for the Spokane Chiefs and the Spokane community. Chiefs’ general manager Tim Speltz says the buzz in the Spokane community is growing as work continues in preparation for Saturday’s game.
“It’s been a really exciting process, and it’s been everything we’ve hoped for,” said Speltz, who has put together two Memorial Cup Championship teams in his time in Spokane. “We’ve had great support and interest from the community, and we’ve had great support from the media.
“This event means a lot to the Spokane Chiefs hockey club, and it’s going to be really great for our fans and everyone in the Spokane community,” he said.
Adding to the excitement is the fact that Saturday’s contest features two of the WHL’s top teams in Spokane and Kootenay.
The Chiefs are the highest scoring team in the WHL, and currently find themselves among the top teams in the Western Conference, while the perennially-strong Ice find themselves among the Eastern Conference’s elite. Saturday’s meeting will be the second of back-to-back encounters between the teams after they meet up in Cranbrook, B.C., on Friday night.
“All the boys are pretty excited to play in the first outdoor game in the WHL,” said veteran Kootenay defenseman Brayden McNabb. “Spokane has a really good team this season, and we are looking forward to seeing how we stack up against them.
“At this point in the season, points matter a lot in the standings, and there are two points available from this game, too,” he added.
Playing the game in the open-aired Avista Stadium, both teams know they should be prepared for anything Mother Nature can throw at them.
One only has to look at the history of outdoor games in the NHL to see the role that weather plays in the whole experience. From bitter cold to heavy snow to rain, as was seen at this year’s Heritage Classic in Pittsburgh, the players all know they have to be ready to deal with conditions they would never face in an arena.
“We’ve heard a lot of different forecasts for what the weather is going to be like,” said Johnson. “I’ve heard we can expect anything from snow to thunderstorms to windy conditions to calm conditions.
“Both teams will have to face the same conditions, so there won’t be any advantage or disadvantage for either team,” he said.

Edmonton, Alb – The Kootenay ICE scored 4 3rd period goals in a come from behind 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings in WHL action on Wednesday afternoon.
The line combination of Max Reinhart-Drew Czerwonka-Matt Fraser were on the ice for all 5 goals and they combined for 11 points.
Reinhart had 3 goals and 2 assists for his 2nd career 5 point game and his 2nd career hat-trick.
Matt Fraser had 1 goal and 3 assists for his 1st career 4 point game.
It was the 150th career game for Czerwonka.

ICE lead the season series 4-0 but every game has been a 1-goal game in the 3rd period.
ICE are 2nd in the Conference and Edmonton is 7th.
Newly added Cody Eakin will not play to a hand injury and Steele Boomer is questionable with a hip injury.
Last year the ICE played in a morning/afternoon game in Edmonton and won 4-2 with a hat-trick from Jesse Ismond.

WHL Outdoor Rules
1. Once the game has begun, at the discretion of the WHL, it may be subject to one or more temporary stoppages due to unplayable conditions.
2. The period and game format may be reconfigured to accommodate temporary stoppages as determined appropriate by the WHL.
3. If wind is a factor at ice level, the WHL will notify the Clubs prior to the third period that the period will be played in two equal halves. The score clock will be set to 10:00 and play will continue until the buzzer reaches 0:00. The Clubs will then change ends and another 10:00 period will be played. This identical procedure will also take place at the 2:30 minute mark of the overtime period, if it is required.
4. In the event of a shoot-out, each Club will determine the end they prefer to defend, which could be the same end.
5. If the game is started, and then stopped permanently due to unplayable conditions, it will be deemed "official" once two periods have been played. The Club leading at the time play is stopped will be declared the winner and will be awarded two points in the standings.
6. If the game is tied at the time play is stopped permanently, and after two periods have been played, each Club will be awarded one point in the standings. If conditions permit, a shoot-out will be immediately held, with the winning Club earning the additional point.
If conditions make it impossible to conduct a shoot-out safely, the shoot-out will take place prior to the next regularly scheduled game between the two Clubs, which is on Friday, January 21 at Spokane.
7. If the game is started, and then stopped permanently due to unplayable conditions, and fewer than two complete periods of regular time have been played, the game will be officially "postponed" with the make-up date later in the season to be determined by the two Clubs and approved by the WHL.
