Update

The Kootenay ICE have advanced to their 3rd WHL Finals.
In 2000 they played against Spokane and 2002 against Red Deer. ICE won both in 6 games.

The West Final goes to game 4 tonight in Spokane with Portland leading 2 games to 1. The road team has won 2 of the 3 games. Last year they met in a 7 game 1st round matchup where the road team won all 7 games.

The winner of the West will have home ice advantage against the ICE in a series that should start May 6th and 7th.
In calls made to both home rinks it appears there should be no buildings conflicts for those 2 dates.
Games 3 and 4 should be May 10th & 11th in Cranbrook.
These are just guesses and the official schedule will be announced after the West Final.

Half of the teams going to the Memorial Cup are known as the host Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors are playing the Owen Sound Attack in the OHL Finals.
QMJHL has 3 teams remaining. Saint John Sea Dogs are in the Final and will meet the winner of the Quebec Remparts/Gatineau Olympiques series. Quebec leads 3 games to 1.
Saint John is 12-1 in the playoffs. Their goalie is former Wheat King/Thunderbird Jacob DeSerres.

ICE have won 11 games in a row and the WHL record in the playoffs is 12.
Calgary 09, Vancouver 06, Spokane 91, Swift Current 89 and Kamloops 84.

During the winning streak the ICE have trailed in games a combined 16 minutes and 12 seconds. In the last 3 games against Moose Jaw they never trailed. Against Saskatoon they trailed for 5:01 in game 4. In the Tigers series they trailed twice in the 3rd period of game 1 for a total of 11:11.

If the ICE were playing tonight they would have welcomed Steele Boomer and Drew Czerwonka back to the lineup, so both obviously will be ready for the Final. Brock Montgomery, who hasn't played in the last 2 rounds, will also be ready for the next series.

The WHL Bantam Draft is on Thursday. Since the ICE are still involved in the playoffs the radio station will not have extra reports during the day but we will have updates on every sportscast every hour. Director of Scouting Garnet Kazuik always gives us scouting reports on all the players selected and we usually contact most of the players selected.

The ICE have 10 picks in the first 7 rounds. Yes, even after the Cody Eakin trade the club still has that many picks in the early rounds. Last year they had 11 picks in the 1st 7 round and made no other selections.
ICE Picks - 1st, 3rd, 4th, Lethbridge 4th (Cason Machacek trade), 5th, Prince George 5th (Petr Senkerik trade), 6th, Brandon 6th (2010 Import pick trade), 7th, Everett 7th (2010 Bantam pick trade), 8th, 9th, 10th.

In the 2012 Bantam Draft the ICE have no 3rd round pick (Cody Eakin trade) and have no extra selections.

Telus Cup Day 5

London Jr. Knights 4 Vancouver NW Giants 1

Sam Reinhart scored a goal and leads the tournament in scoring 5 GP 7-12-19.

Saturday's Semi-Finals ...
London Jr. Knights - Vancouver NW Giants
Winnipeg Thrashers - Lions du Lac St-Louis

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Matthew Schurr and Wyatt Coghill scored 1:21 apart early in the second period to break open a 1-0 game as the London Jr. Knights kept alive their chances of making the semifinals at the 2011 TELUS Cup with a 4-1 win over the Vancouver North West Giants on Friday morning.

The loss was the first of the tournament for the Giants (4-1), who had already clinched first place in the round robin, while the Jr. Knights (1-2-2) earned their first win after skating to ties in their last two games.

Despite coming into the game as the underdogs, the Jr. Knights needed just 3:03 to open the scoring – Paul Hopkins capitalized on a Giants turnover and beat Scott Legault on a breakaway to give London a surprising 1-0 lead.

The Jr. Knights dominated the opening period, outshooting Vancouver 20-6, but Hopkins’ goal was the only one of the first 20 minutes.

It didn’t take long for London to increase its lead once the puck dropped to start the second, as Schurr made it 2-0 just 1:37 into the period and Coghill pushed the advantage to three 81 seconds later, racing down the left wing and blasting a shot over the glove of Legault.

The vaunted Vancouver power play, which had failed on its first two opportunities in the first period, got the Giants on the board just past the midway point of the second, with Sam Reinhart scoring his seventh goal of the tournament, tying him with linemate Alex Kerfoot for the tournament’s goal-scoring lead.

But London quelled the Vancouver momentum with a goal in the dying seconds of the second period off the stick of Connor Hogg, who stepped out from the corner and beat Legault.

Both teams will wait for the conclusion of play on Friday to find out their Saturday fates – London will find out if their quest for a national championship will continue, while Vancouver will find out who they’ll face in the semifinals.

WHL Award Nominees

Calgary, AB - The Western Hockey League today announced the WHL Eastern and Western Conference finalists for the 2010-11 WHL Player of the Year. The two finalists for WHL Player of the Year were determined through voting by General Managers, coaches, broadcast and media representatives of all WHL Member Clubs.

In the WHL's Eastern Conference, which includes the East and Central Divisions, the Player of the Year Nominee is goaltender Darcy Kuemper of the Red Deer Rebels.
Kuemper enjoyed an outstanding season for the Red Deer Rebels, backstopping them to their first Central Division title since the 2003-04 season. The 20-year-old from Saskatoon, SK, appeared in 62 games for the Rebels during the 2010-11 WHL regular season, posting a 45-12-3-2 record as the Rebels finished with 104 points in the standings.
Kuemper led all WHL goaltenders in wins (45), goals-against average (1.86) and save percentage (.933) during the regular season, helping the Rebels to the WHL’s best defensive record. In addition, Kuemper tied a WHL single-season record by posting 13 shutouts. During the regular season, Kuemper maintained a high level of consistency, losing back-to-back decisions on only two occasions. He was named the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week on three different occasions during the regular season – the only goalie in the CHL to win the award three times this year – and was named the Vaughn WHL Goaltender of the Month for January.
Originally selected by the Spokane Chiefs in the 3rd round, 45th overall, of the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft, Kuemper was acquired by the Rebels in 2007 and has played 178 regular-season games for Red Deer over the last three seasons. Kuemper was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the 6th round, 161st overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

In the WHL's Western Conference, which includes the B.C. and U.S. Divisions, the Player of the Year Nominee is forward Tyler Johnson of the Spokane Chiefs.
Johnson, a 20-year-old from Spokane, WA, starred his hometown Chiefs during the 2010-11 WHL regular season, scoring 53 goals and 62 assists for 115 points in 71 games to lead the Chiefs to a 48-18-4-2 record for 102 points and a second-place finish in the U.S. Division.
Johnson finished first among all WHL players with 53 goals and finished second in the WHL scoring race with 115 points. One of just two players to reach the 50-goal plateau this season, Johnson tied for fifth in the WHL with 17 power play markers, tied for second in the WHL with six shorthanded goals, and tied for 10th among WHL players with seven game-winning goals. A consistent offensive producer for the Chiefs, Johnson recorded at least one point in 57 of the 71 games he played this season. He was named the Husky WHL Player of the Month for December.
Johnson has played four seasons in the WHL, all with his hometown Chiefs, recording 128 goals and 154 assists for 282 points in 266 regular-season games. The 5’9”, 175-lb center, who helped the Chiefs win the 2008 WHL Championship and MasterCard Memorial Cup, was never chosen in the NHL Entry Draft, but signed an entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in March 2011.

The recipients of all WHL individual awards will be announced at the 2011 WHL Awards Luncheon, which will be held in Calgary, Alberta, at the Round-Up Centre on Wednesday, May 4, 2011.

Kootenay vs Medicine Hat, 1 more day to go

The Kootenay ICE are venturing into familiar territory and an unfamiliar situation as they’re headed to Medicine Hat for the start of the WHL’s Eastern Conference Final.

The ICE and Tigers met 6 times during the regular season with ICE winning the series with a 4-1-1 record. Two of the ICE wins came in the 4,006-seat Arena in Medicine Hat. But, for the ICE it’s their 1st appearance in the WHL’s Final Four since 2005 when they lost in the West Final to the Kelowna Rockets. Back then the ICE regularly went deep into the playoffs as they won the League titles in 2000 and 2002.

The teams’ have followed similar paths in this years post season as the ICE took out Moose Jaw in 6 games in the 1st round and then upset Saskatoon 4 straight in the 2nd round. The Tigers eliminated Bandon in 6 games in the 1st round and pulled off an upset of Red Deer in 5 games.

For the ICE it will be a 9 days between games as they took out the Blades on April 6th at the Cranbrook Rec-Plex. Assistant Coach Todd Johnson says there are mostly positives with a long break at this time of the season “We had a few guys who had some bumps and bruises, so it’s nice they can have a chance to get healthy and have a couple of days off. We’re not reading too much into the break, it’s going to be the guys preparing themselves and focusing themselves to be ready to go on Friday.”
One of the players who needed some healing was forward Drew Czerwonka who missed 3 games in the Moose Jaw series with a shoulder injury and feels stronger heading into the weekend “We have a few guys beaten up here so the break is allowing us to heal. We still have to practice hard and practice with a high tempo so we are ready for Medicine Hat. All the boys are working hard and we are ready to get going.”

The ICE are on a Franchise Record tying 7-game playoff winning streak and are coming off a series win over the CHL’s #2 ranked Saskatoon Blades. Forward Jesse Ismond says it also helps the confidence knowing they had success against the Tigers during the regular season “With Saskatoon series we didn’t have a good regular season series (0-4 record) but we have played well against Medicine Hat and it’s good to have going into the series. We know they’re a skilled team and if you give them time and space they’re going to execute.”

The game plan for the ICE will be similar to the previous rounds where they played highly skilled teams in the Warriors and Blades. Defenseman Luke Paulsen says it’s no secret who they have to try and shutdown in the series “We know quite a lot about them, we’ve played them a lot over the years. We know what they can do, they have a lot of scoring up front and if we can keep playing the way we’ve been playing we’ll be fine.” Ismond agrees “They’ve got some good skilled players in (Linden) Vey and (Emerson) Etem and we know we need be hard on those guys like we were with (Brayden) Schenn and (Curtis) Hamilton.”

Even tough the ICE and Tigers have developed a rivalry of the last few years the ICE have nothing but respect for the Medicine Hat organization. Czerwonka says they deserve to be where they are, “They have some highly skilled players and we will need to play physical.” Johnson had a chance to watch the Tigers in person as they beat the Rebels in game 5 on Saturday and says they were the better team “They’re a confident group and they all are playing very very well.”

It’ll be the 2nd series in a row that the ICE will have to start on the road as they’ll meet in a building that is loud and has lively boards which creates a wild atmosphere. Czerwonka says it’s a unique place to play “It’s crazy, their fans are pretty rowdy, it’s loud all the time. It’s a great environment to play in.” Ismond says it’s a great place to play “It’s intense, it’s fast, it’s everything the playoffs are about. It’s almost reckless in there at times.”

The ICE have won their last 4 road games in this years’ playoffs and Johnson says sometimes it’s a positive to start on the road “I find it’s easier. The pressure is on the home team as they have to win those 2 games or they lose home ice advantage. For us it’s going in there and trying to set the tone on how we want to play in the series.” Paulsen says they approach each game the same “We bring our work ethic every night and it doesn’t matter where we are playing right now. That’s a good thing right now and not having home ice advantage is not hurting us right now.”

Along with playing each other 6 times a year in the regular season, this will be the 3rd playoff meeting between the clubs in the last 4 years. In 2008 the ICE, without home ice advantage, won the series in 5 games including winning the 1st 2 games on the road. Last year the Tigers came back from a 0-2 series deficit and won the next 4 games to win the series. Both meetings happened in the 1st round. This time around the winner will advance to play Portland or Spokane in the WHL Finals. Familiar or unfamiliar there is no better place to be at this time of the season.

Telus Cup Day 3

Vancouver NW Giants 4 - St. John's Privateers 3

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. – Jackson Houck scored the game-tying goal early in the third period and helped set up Sam Reinhart for the game-winner six minutes later as the Vancouver North West Giants survived a scare on Wednesday night, beating the St. John's Privateers 4-3.

The win leaves the Giants (3-0) as the tournament's lone unbeaten team, while the Privateers (1-2) saw their semifinal chances take a hit despite holding leads of 2-1 and 3-2 through the first 40 minutes. Coming off its first win of the tournament 24 hours earlier, St. John's came out with jump against the Pacific Region champions, but fell victim to the vaunted Vancouver power play, which converted for the eighth time in 13 chances when Alex Kerfoot snapped a shot past Matt Jenkins.

It took just 46 seconds for the Privateers to reply, however, as Marcus Power drove to the Vancouver net and snuck a shot through the pads of Giants netminder Scott Legault to ignite the hometown crowd at Mile One Centre. Fans were barely back in their seats at the start of the second period when Justin O'Reilly went crossbar and in on Legault to give St. John's its first lead of the game at 2-1.

Penalties came back to haunt the Privateers, though, with the Giants pulling even on another man advantage; Joel Issigonis tipped home a Bo Pellah shot just shy of the midway point of the middle frame.

St. John's took its third and final lead at 14:12 of the second when Danny Wicks buried a neat little feed from Power, who finished with a goal and two assists.

Once again the Giants turned to their power play, although it was a fortuitous bounce off the corner boards that allowed Kerfoot and Reinhart to set up Houck for his fourth goal of the tournament.

The Privateers had a glorious opportunity to retake the lead when Power was awarded a penalty shot shortly after Houck's goal, but the St. John's captain had his forehand deke stymied by the pad of Legault, who kept the game tied.

That set up the Kerfoot-to-Reinhart combination that has been so reliable for the Giants all week. Kerfoot found Reinhart in front, and the son of former NHLer Paul Reinhart buried it behind Jenkins to give Vancouver its first lead since 1-0.

Reinhart's goal was the only one not scored with the man advantage by Vancouver, although it came just 20 seconds after a St. John's penalty had ended, with Vancouver's top power play unit still on the ice. Vancouver tries to run its record to 4-0 on Thursday after when it takes on the Lions du Lac St-Louis (3:30 p.m. NT), while the Privateers will look to keep their semifinal hopes alive against the Winnipeg Thrashers (7 p.m. NT).

Telus Cup Day 2

Sam Reinhart had 1 goal and 3 assists as the Vancouver NW Giants improved to 2-0 with a 6-1 win over Halifax.

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Alex Kerfoot had a hat trick and added two assists and Sam Reinhart finished with agoal and three helpers as the Vancouver North West Giants continued their offensive roll through the 2011 TELUS Cup, beating the Halifax Titans 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Mile One Centre.

Through two games Kerfoot (five goals, eight assists) and Reinhart (four goals, nine assists) sit tied atop the tournament scoring chart with 13 points in two games, a remarkable pace at any level, let alone anational championship.

After scoring four times in the first 10 minutes and six times in the first period of their win overWinnipeg on Monday, the Giants (2-0) managed just a single goal in the opening frame against Halifax (1-1), a power play marker off the stick of Reinhart.

But the flood gates opened in period two, thanks in large part to Vancouver’s play with the man advantage. Kerfoot and Cam Marks scored power play goals in the second period, sandwiched between even-strength markers from Kerfoot and Sean Lan, sending the Giants to the dressing room up 5-0 after 40 minutes.

Alex MacNeil ruined the shutout bid of Daniel Cotton early in the third period before Kerfoot finished off his hat trick on a beautiful feed from Reinhart, capping the scoring.

The Giants are the first team to win their first two games by at least five goals since the Prince Albert Mintos in 2006, who won the gold medal, and they’re the first B.C. team to start 2-0 at the National MidgetChampionship since the Burnaby Winter Club in 1982 – the team that won the province’s lone national title.

Vancouver will try to run its record to 3-0 on Wednesday when it meets the host St. John’s Privateers (7p.m. NT), while the Titans will take on the Lions du Lac St-Louis in the day’s matinee.

Telus Cup Day 1

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Sam Reinhart scored a hat trick and added six assists, finishing with a remarkable nine points, as the Vancouver North West Giants opened the 2011 TELUS Cup with a 12-5 rout of the Winnipeg Thrashers on Monday afternoon.
Alex Kerfoot added two goals and five assists and Jackson Houck had a hat trick of his own as Vancouver’s top line combined for 19 points, helping the Giants become the first team since Magog in 2000 to score a dozen goals in a game at the National Midget Championship.
The 17 total goals tied the all-time record for combined goals in a game, set in Magog’s 14-3 win over Richmond Hill at the 2000 tournament.
The game got off to a wild start, as Joel Issigonis, Scott Patterson, Houck and Reinhart scored for Vancouver, while Tyler Kauk replied for Winnipeg, all within the first 10 minutes. Kerfoot and Houck added goals for the Giants before the end of the opening period to send the Pacific Region champions to the dressing room with a 6-2 lead.
Reinhart and Kerfoot each had five points in the first 20 minutes.
The Thrashers cut into the lead by a single goal in the second period and were down 8-5 after two, but four unanswered goals by the Giants in the final frame rounded out the scoring.
In addition to the scoring exploits of the top line, Dexter Dancs and Giants captain Mitch Fyffe also put their names on the scoresheet, helping make Vancouver just the seventh team in the tournament’s 33-year history to score at least 12 goals.
The Giants will look continue the offensive momentum when they take on the Halifax Titans on Tuesday afternoon (3:30 p.m. NT), while the Thrashers will look to rebound against the Lions du Lac St-Louis in the day’s early game (noon NT).
