Telus Cup Day 1

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Sam Reinhart scored a hat trick and added six assists, finishing with a remarkable nine points, as the Vancouver North West Giants opened the 2011 TELUS Cup with a 12-5 rout of the Winnipeg Thrashers on Monday afternoon.
Alex Kerfoot added two goals and five assists and Jackson Houck had a hat trick of his own as Vancouver’s top line combined for 19 points, helping the Giants become the first team since Magog in 2000 to score a dozen goals in a game at the National Midget Championship.
The 17 total goals tied the all-time record for combined goals in a game, set in Magog’s 14-3 win over Richmond Hill at the 2000 tournament.
The game got off to a wild start, as Joel Issigonis, Scott Patterson, Houck and Reinhart scored for Vancouver, while Tyler Kauk replied for Winnipeg, all within the first 10 minutes. Kerfoot and Houck added goals for the Giants before the end of the opening period to send the Pacific Region champions to the dressing room with a 6-2 lead.
Reinhart and Kerfoot each had five points in the first 20 minutes.
The Thrashers cut into the lead by a single goal in the second period and were down 8-5 after two, but four unanswered goals by the Giants in the final frame rounded out the scoring.
In addition to the scoring exploits of the top line, Dexter Dancs and Giants captain Mitch Fyffe also put their names on the scoresheet, helping make Vancouver just the seventh team in the tournament’s 33-year history to score at least 12 goals.
The Giants will look continue the offensive momentum when they take on the Halifax Titans on Tuesday afternoon (3:30 p.m. NT), while the Thrashers will look to rebound against the Lions du Lac St-Louis in the day’s early game (noon NT).
