Bozon To Return To ICE

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced today that forward Tim Bozon has been assigned to his junior team, the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League.

“Tim Bozon has come a long way. He fought a life-threatening disease with courage and determination and we are pleased with what he accomplished in the last few months. He was able to take part in the rookie camp, the Canadiens’ official camp and the Hamilton Bulldogs training camp. However, with his progression having been diminished due to illness, we feel that one of the priorities for his long term development is for him to fully regain his physical strength. We believe that joining the Kootenay Ice in the WHL is the right decision at this time as it will allow Tim to fully recover”, said Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin.

Bozon, 20, took part in the Canadiens’ rookie camp last September, as well as the Club’s main camp. The 6’01’’ and 189 lbs forward played in his first professional game on September 26 in Quebec City. Bozon was assigned to the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs on September 28. He played in all three preseason games with the Bulldogs against the St. John’s Icecaps.

In 63 games with Kamloops and Kootenay in the WHL in 2013-14, Bozon collected 69 points (33 goals, 36 assists).

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Bozon was selected in the third round, 64th overall by the Canadiens at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Moosed Jaw 3 Kootenay 1

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/warriors-slip-past-ice-thursday

Two power-play goals helped the Moose Jaw Warriors take away a 3-1 victory over the Kootenay ICE at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw Thursday.

ICE goaltender Keelan Williams made 35 saves in his first career WHL start and was named the game's first star.

The Warriors tested Williams early, firing 16 shots his way in the opening frame, but the two sides were unable to muster any offense in period one.

Moose Jaw opened the scoring 4:40 into the second period on a power-play as Torrin White knocked a rebound in past Williams.

The Warriors added to their lead with 9:01 left in the third period, as 16 year-old Brett Howden put home his fourth goal of the season.

Eight of the 18 shots on goal amassed by the ICE Thursday came in the third period, and Kootenay found the back of the net in the late stages of the game through Luke Philp. The 19 year-old wired home his first career short-handed goal after being sprung in on goal by linemate Jaedon Descheneau to draw Kootenay back to within a goal with 1:46 to play.

The ICE came ever so close to scoring the equalizer moments later only to be denied by Moose Jaw goalie Zach Sawchenko's crossbar.

Tanner Eberle added insurance for the hosts in the closing seconds with a power-play marker. The Warriors finished 2/8 on the man advantage.

Sawchenko, who earlier this week was named the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week, turned aside 17 shots.

UP NEXT: Kootenay concludes its current four-game road trip Friday in Swift Current. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Regina 5 Kootenay 4

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-edged-by-pats

A late goal from Adam Brooks helped the Regina Pats edge past the Kootenay ICE 5-4 Wednesday at the Brandt Centre in Regina.

Brooks broke a 4-4 tie with a shot that caromed off a goalpost into the ICE net as the Pats withstood a sensational performance by Kootenay forward Jaedon Descheneau, who finished with four points.

Descheneau got the ICE off the mark early in the first period, converting on a setup from linemate Luke Philp at the 5:21 mark. Kootenay took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The hosts, however, found their offensive stride 90 seconds into the second period through Chase Harrison, who collected his first career WHL goal.

Nelson product Dryden Hunt put Regina ahead ten minutes later on a two-man advantage, but the lead was short-lived as Descheneau added to his tally on a Kootenay power-play 1:14 after the Pats' go-ahead goal to send the two sides into the second intermission tied 2-2.

Regina reclaimed their lead inside the opening minute of period three thanks to Brooks, then pushed the score to 4-2 at the 1:15 mark.

The ICE, though, battled back. Descheneau fired home his hat-trick goal on a breakaway at 4:52, then set up forward Levi Cable for the tying goal with 4:08 remaining in regulation time.

Brooks found time and space to deposit the eventual winning goal at 18:08, however, quelling the Kootenay comeback as the Pats put 47 shots at ICE netminder Wyatt Hoflin.

Descheneau recorded his fourth career regular-season hat-trick and has now scored in three consecutive games.

Cable and Philp both compiled multi-point efforts.

Kootenay killed 7 of 8 Regina power-plays, including two of three two-man advantages.

Daniel Wapple collected the win in goal for the Pats, making 27 saves.

UP NEXT: the ICE are back in action Thursday in Moose Jaw. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Calgary 6 Kootenay 4

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-upended-by-hitmen-saturday
Radel Fazleev broke a 4-4 tie with 8:15 remaining in regulation time to help the Calgary Hitmen to a 6-4 victory over the Kootenay ICE Saturday.

The Hitmen were buoyed by a four-goal third period, and a four-point effort from forward Chase Lang, while Kootenay was led by a pair of power-play goals from Luke Philp.

Calgary opened the scoring on a man-advantage just before the six-minute mark of period one, as winger Kenton Helgesen recorded his first goal of the season off an offensive zone face-off.

The ICE battled back, though, finding an equalizer from first-year forward Vince Loschiavo at the 13:28 mark of the opening frame. It was the Winnipeg product's first career WHL goal.

Kootenay jumped in front 28 seconds later when Jaedon Descheneau, fresh off an overtime winner against Spokane Friday, pounced on a rebound in front of Hitmen goaltender Mack Shields to tuck home his second goal in as many days.

The ICE maintained their 2-1 lead until the midway mark of the second. After being granted a two-man advantage, head coach Ryan McGill elected to use his timeout.

The manoeuvre paid off, as Philp buried a pair of one-timer goals in a 1:22 span to chase Shields and put Kootenay ahead 4-1.

Connor Rankin completed the second-period scoring with 4:39 left on a rebound in front of ICE netminder Wyatt Hoflin.

Rankin added an assist at the 7:01 mark of the third period, helping out on an Adam Tambellini goal that caromed off a body in front of Hoflin's goal to cut the Kootenay lead to 4-3. Calgary leveled the score 2:18 later on another fortuitous bounce, striking on a short-handed effort from blueliner Ben Thomas that deflected in off a skate.

Fazleev gave the hosts the lead just after the midway point of the third period, snapping a wrist shot past Hoflin's stick side.

Lang then scored a goal 75 seconds later that was initially waved off, but upon video review it was determined the puck had crossed the goalline.

The ICE pressured Hitmen goaltender Evan Johnson with 13 third-period shots, but the rookie netminder did not surrender a goal in relief.

Hoflin made 33 saves in goal for Kootenay.

Philp recorded his fifth career two-goal game, while defenseman Tyler King chipped in with three assists. First-year defenseman Cale Fleury added a pair of helpers.

UP NEXT: The ICE begin a three-game swing in Saskatchewan Wednesday, October 8 with a matchup against the Regina Pats. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Kootenay 2 Spokane 1

From Chris Wahl ... http://www.kootenayice.net/article/ice-rally-to-defeat-chiefs-in-home-opener

Jaedon Descheneau's goal in the dying moments of overtime helped lift the Kootenay ICE to a 2-1 victory over the Spokane Chiefs Friday at Western Financial Place.

Descheneau, playing in only his second game since being returned to the ICE from the St. Louis Blues, weaved through traffic before snapping home a wrist shot from the slot to punctuate Kootenay's 2014-15 home opener with a comeback win.

ICE goaltender Wyatt Hoflin and Chiefs counterpart Garret Hughson were the focal points Friday, with both netminders making save after save through a scoreless opening fourty minutes.

Spokane struck early in the third period through Keanu Yamamoto, who potted his second goal of the season 4:15 into the frame to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Kootenay pressed for an equalizer, however, firing 7 shots at Hughson before Zak Zborosky rifled home a wrist shot from the right-wing circle that sailed over the Spokane goaltender's right shoulder.

The ICE would wait until the closing stages of overtime before Descheneau, after collecting the puck in the left-wing corner, circled through to the middle of the offensive zone, beating both Hughson and the clock for his first goal in Kootenay silks this season.

Hoflin made 36 saves in the ICE goal, while Hughson stopped 30 Kootenay shots.

Friday's victory was head coach Ryan McGill's 250th with the ICE franchise.

UP NEXT: The ICE travel to Calgary for the first meeting of the 2014-15 season with the Hitmen. Game time is 7:00 pm.

ICE Roster To 24

The ICE have released Forward Shane Allan (97) and Defenseman Mark O'Shaughnessy (97).
Roster now stands at 24 players (2G, 8D, 14F).

Red Deer 7 ICE 1

A three-point effort from captain Conner Bleackley paced the Red Deer Rebels to a 7-1 victory over the Kootenay ICE in Red Deer Saturday.

Bleackley, making his return to the Rebels lineup after attending Colorado Avalanche Training Camp, set up the eventual game-winning goal, and scored in the dying seconds of the opening frame as Red Deer evened the season series with the ICE at one game apiece.

The hosts burst out of the gate, firing 18 first-period shots at Kootenay goaltender Wyatt Hoflin, and scoring twice in the opening four minutes thanks to Grayson Pawlenchuk and Meyer Nell.

Bleackley upped the score to 3-0 with only five seconds remaining in the period when, after a Red Deer faceoff win, he rifled a snap shot home from the high slot.

The two sides traded chances in period two, but there was no further scoring until centreman Preston Kopeck put home a power-play goal 80 seconds into the third period.

Wyatt Johnson added a fifth Rebel goal from just beside Hoflin's right post 2:32 later.

The ICE would earn their first power-play of the game minutes later, but upon returning to play Red Deer forward Scott Feser received a breakaway pass and scored the Rebels' sixth goal of the evening, freezing first-year netminder Keelan Williams on the clear-cut chance.

The ICE broke rookie Rylan Toth's shutout bid with 12:38 remaining in regulation on forward Kyle O'Connor's first goal of the year. The Calgarian fired home a one-timer from the low slot after linemate Ryan Chynoweth stripped a Red Deer defenseman of the puck to the left of Toth's cage.

Kopeck rounded out the scoring less than a minute later with a solo short-handed effort.

Toth made 17 saves to earn his second victory of the season, while Hoflin made 26 stops in the ICE goal. Williams made his first regular-season WHL appearance in relief, turning aside 7 shots in 14:45 of action.

Edmonton 4 ICE 2

Andrew Koep's two-goal performance, including a game-winner inside the final four minutes helped the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 4-2 victory over the Kootenay ICE Saturday at Rexall Place.

Koep, making his WHL debut, fired a shot home from the slot at 16:02 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and hand the ICE a split of their two-game weekend in Alberta.

Kootenay started brightly, opening the scoring on a power-play goal from Alexander Chirva at 7:34 of the first period. It was the first goal in an ICE uniform for the Russian, who spent last season with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Oil Kings equalized before the period was through, as Cole Benson tapped home his first goal of the season with 5:17 remaining to level the score at 1-1.

Kootenay goaltender Wyatt Hoflin was the busier of the two netminders Saturday, and turned aside 16 of 17 Edmonton shots in the opening frame. The Oil Kings had four power-plays including a minute-long two-man advantage in period one.

Koep put his mark on the proceedings late in the second period, giving the Oil Kings a 2-1 lead before first-year blueliner Bryan Allbee beat Edmonton netminder Patrick Dea and the buzzer with a one-timer with just 2.4 seconds left on the clock. It was the Prince George, BC product's first career WHL goal.

The ICE enjoyed more offensive zone time in the third period, but were unable to beat Dea despite enjoying a five-on-three of their own. The teams remained level until Koep's tie-breaking goal gave the Oil Kings a 3-2 lead.

Tyler Robertson added an empty-net goal in the final minute to complete the scoring.

Kootenay successfully killed six of Edmonton's seven power-plays, with the Oil Kings' lone power-play goal coming through Robertson's insurance marker.

Hoflin made 32 saves in the ICE goal, while Dea stopped 18 of 20 Kootenay shots to record his first WHL victory.

Veterans Austin Vetterl and Levi Cable each chipped in with assists for the ICE.

THREE STARS:
1. Andrew Koep, Edmonton
2. Wyatt Hoflin, Kootenay
3. Cole Benson, Edmonton

UP NEXT: The ICE complete a stretch of three consecutive games away from home Saturday, September 27th in Red Deer. Kootenay plays only one of its first eight regular-season games at Western Financial Place.

Red Deer opened the scoring 4:59 into the game when Brooks Maxwell sprung free on a short-handed breakaway.

Kootenay answered back with a pair of goals later in the opening frame, first through fifth-year forward Austin Vetterl just past the midway mark.

Zak Zborosky gave the ICE the lead with 3:44 remaining in period one when he shoved a rebound in the crease past Rebels netminder Taz Burman.

The teams traded chances and momentum in the second period, with Red Deer capitalizing with a two goals inside the final five minutes.

After Brett Cote slapped a point shot home, the Rebels took a 3-2 lead into the intermission through centreman Meyer Nell.

The ICE found an equalizer off a bounce in front of Burman just seventeen seconds into the third, as Zborosky crashed the net to score his second goal of the game.

WHL Rule Changes

Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League today announced a series of rule changes for the upcoming 2014-15 WHL Season, which opens Friday evening.
Rule changes for the 2014-15 WHL Season were tested during pre-season and most of the changes adopted by the National Hockey League (NHL):
*Indicates rule adopted by the NHL
1) Overtime
During the regular season, at the end of the third period of a tied game, there will be a two minute break prior to the start of a five (5) minute sudden-death overtime period (same as in previous seasons).
*The Clubs must change ends for the overtime period.
2) Shootout
Should a regular season game be tied after the five (5) minute sudden-death overtime period, the Zamboni(s) will do a dry scrape of the middle of the ice (same as in previous seasons).
*The Clubs must change ends again for the shootout.
*The home team shall have the choice of shooting first or second, and the Clubs shall alternate shots.
*The spin-o-rama type move where the player completes a 360 degree turn as he approaches the goal shall not be permitted. Should a player perform such a move during the penalty shot, the shot shall be stopped immediately by the referee, and no goal shall be permitted. (This also applies on regular penalty shot situations during a game)
3) Tripping
*A two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player “dives” and trips an attacking player with his stick, body, arm or shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck.
*In situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player “dives” and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two minute minor for tripping).
4) No Change Icing
*When a Club commits a no change icing infraction, a face-off violation by that team will not result in the center being removed.
*Instead, the center will be warned by the linesman that his Club has committed their first face-off violation. The linesman will then conduct the face-off as quickly as possible.
*Any second violation by that same Club, on the same stoppage, will result in a bench minor penalty for delay of game (face-off violation) being assessed.
*If the center attempts to arrive at the face-off spot just as the five seconds elapse to gain an advantage to win the face-off, he shall not be removed from the face-off. The center will be warned by the linesman that his Club has committed a face-off violation. In the event the center then commits a second face-off violation, or the action is actually the second face-off violation, a bench minor penalty for delay of game will be assessed.
5) Puck Out of Bounds
With respect to the attacking Club being responsible for the puck going out of play in the attacking zone, the following exceptions apply, and as a result, the face-off shall be conducted at one of the face-off spots in the attacking zone:
*Shot at the net that deflects off the goal post or crossbar and out of play
*Shot at the net that breaks the glass
*Shot at the net that goes off the side of the net and out of play
*Shot at the net that goes off the dasher boards or glass and out of play
*Shot at the net that is tipped or deflected by a teammate out of play
*Shot at the net that becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net
6) Video Goal Judge Reviewable Situation
When a goal has been scored and the Video Goal Judge has conclusive video evidence that the puck hit the netting (therefore out of play) and went back onto the ice surface which was undetected by the on-ice officials, this goal shall not be allowed. If the puck subsequently leaves the attacking zone after hitting the net, this play is no longer reviewable by the Video Goal Judge.

New WHL Playoff Format

Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League will have a new playoff format for the 2015 WHL Playoffs. The new format mirrors that of the National Hockey League and is designed to enhance Divisional rivalries in the First Round of the WHL Playoffs.
The Western Hockey League’s Eastern and Western Conferences will use a Divisional/Conference hybrid playoff format, with the inclusion of Wild Card qualifiers, for the 2015 WHL Playoffs. All playoff series are still best-of-seven affairs.
The new format will see the top three Clubs in each Division make up the first six playoff qualifiers within each of the two WHL Conferences. The remaining two spots per Conference will be filled via Wild Cards, with the next two highest-placed Clubs in each Conference earning playoff berths based on their regular season record, regardless of Division.
In the First Round, the Division winner with the best record in each Conference will be matched against the wild card team with the lesser record; the wild card team with the better record will play the other Division winner. The second and third-place teams within each Division will also meet in the First Round.
First-round winners within each bracket play one another in the Second Round with the four winning Clubs advancing to the Conference Championships. Home ice advantage through the first two rounds goes to the Club that placed higher in regular season standings.
The two Clubs winning second round series in each Conference will advance to the third round (WHL Conference Championships), where they will be ranked in order of regular season points.
The Eastern and Western Conference Champions will advance to the best-of-seven WHL Championship Series, with the Club having the most regular season points receiving home ice advantage.

Big Week Of Practice

The Kootenay ICE are back home after going 0-3-0 in Tri City.
As far as wins-and-losses are concerned the ICE have always struggled in this tournament as they were playing teams who started their training camps 1-2 weeks earlier than the ICE and are playing their 4th and 5th preseason games.
The club is really looking forward to working on their team systems with practices Monday-Thursday and then will play exhibition games against Lethbridge (Friday evening) and Calgary (Sunday afternoon) in the Crowsnest Pass.
The ICE will not make any cuts to the roster and will remain with 27 players (3 goalies, 9 defensemen, 15 forwards).
5 will be leaving the club this week to attend NHL camps, Rinat Valiev and Luke Philp to Toronto's camp, Jaedon Deschenau to St. Louis, Tanner Faith to Minnesota and Jon Martin to Vancouver.
