CHL Season Is Done

Saint John won the Memorial Cup with a 3-1 win over Mississauga.

Thoughts

The ICE will be on a plane in about an hour and will arrive in Cranbrook sometime after 1pm.

Making it to the Memorial Cup and not winnng the trophy is a bitter sweet way to end a hockey season and that's why it's the toughest hockey championship to win.
To the fans, don't let this spoil what an amazing run the ICE had this season.
The ICE are WHL Champions and the players/coaches/management should be proud.

This was the first Memorial Cup that the ICE have played in that I felt anyone was capable of winning. The quality of the teams was top notch. You can do this week of hockey 4 times and end up with 4 different winners. All 3 leagues should be proud of the quality of coaching and players that is be presented in their leagues.

The ICE were getting closer to how they played in the WHL Playoffs but never reached that level of play. The ICE played 5 games in 7 days and in the semifinal played a team with 10 19-year-olds and their size, strength, depth and getting an early lead presented a tough challenge for the ICE.

On the radio station today you'll be hearing comments on the news and sports from Jeff Chynoweth, Kris Knoblauch and Todd Johnson. They are disppointed in the result but are proud on how the team hung in there when they started 0-2 and were down 2-0 to Saint John in their final round robin game.

Next up is the ICE season ticket early bird deadline on June 1st. As I mentioned last night, it's important we find a way to get back to a base of 2,500. The community is too small to hope for a walk-up crowd of 1,000-1,500 every night to have good crowds.
It works out to $11/game.
The ICE have a payment play to stretch out the payments.
Check with your boss to see if he/she will get tickets for the staff.
If you can't go to all the games, find someone to split the season tickets.
Find a way to get the kids to go to games as they are the future season ticket holders.
The ICE are working on some new ideas for next season and winning a WHL Championship is something that sure was great to be a part of, especially seeing this team being built the last 4 years.

Kootenay vs Saint John Memorial Cup Game #3

The Kootenay ICE will play their final round robin game of the Memorial Cup against the QMJHL Champion Saint John Sea Dogs.
An ICE win will put them into Thursday's tiebreaker game against the loser of tomorrow's game between Owen Sound and Mississauga.
A loss and the ICE are out of the tournament.
The ICE will have to win 4 games in a row to win the Memorial Cup.
The only team to start the tournament 0-2 and win the Memorial Cup was the 2009 Windsor Spitfires.
Saint John (2-0) has qualified for Sunday's final.
Brayden McNabb will return after sitting out a 1 game suspension.
ICE will not face former Wheat King/Thunderbird Jacob DeSerres as the Sea Dogs' goalie will be Mathieu Corbeil.
Top defenseman Simon Despres (Pittsbirgh 1st round pick) and scoring forward Michael Kirkpatrick (4 points in tournament) will also sit out.

Update

Saint John 3 Owen Sound 2 OT

Sea Dogs have clinched a spot in Sunday's final.
They still have to play the ICE tomorrow in the final round robin game for both clubs.

If the ICE win they'll go to Thursday's tiebreaker game against the loser of Wednesday's game between Mississauga and Owen Sound.

ICE Day Off & Tiebreaker Rules

The ICE will play their final round robin game of the Memorial Cup tomorrow against the QMJHL Champion Saint John Sea Dogs.
For the rest of the tournament the ICE are in a must win situation.
Only the 2009 Windsor Spitfires started 0-2 and won the Memorial Cup.

Tonight Saint John plays Owen Sound.
If the Sea Dogs win they clinch 1st place and tomorrow's game against the ICE will have no meaning to them in the standings.

If the Attack win it sets up a possibilty of a 3-way tie for 2nd place, because if the ICE win and then if Owen Sound beats Mississauga on Wednesday the Attack would be 3-0 and the three other teams would be 1-2.

There is a tiebreaker rule in which one team would get a bye to the Semi-Final and the two other teams would play in the tiebreaker game.

Playoff Formula
The game each team played against the 1st place team is removed from their records. Then you add each team's goals for with their goals against which sum you divide into such team's goals for. The team with the highest percentage gains the higher position in the standings and an automatic berth as the home team in the semi-final game. The remaining two teams will play in the tiebreaker game.

The ICE 5-0 loss to Owen Sound would not count and the fact they lost a 1-goal game to the Majors also helps them in the tiebreaker rules.
Saint John also had a 1 goal game against Mississauga but it was a higher scoring game which benifits both of those teams.
The ICE would need a win with at least a 2-goal margin to have a bye into the semi-final.

Of course all of this doesn't matter if the ICE don't win tomorrow.

Most IF situations have the ICE needing to win 4 straight games to win the tournament.

The 2011 WHL Champions, the Kootenay Ice are making their third appearance at the MasterCard Memorial Cup in franchise history. The Ice went winless in their first Memorial Cup experience in 2000, but won it all in 2002.

Up Front: The Ice have been getting plenty of mileage out of their older group of forwards. Veterans Matt Fraser, Cody Eakin and Max Reinhart combined to score 43 of the team’s 74 post-season goals, while veteran Joe Antilla, with nine tallies, was the only other player to surpass the five-goal mark in the playoffs. Even though much of their offense comes from their top guns, the Ice can roll four lines who all play with the same intensity, determination and fire. A relentless forecheck, tremendous work ethic and strict adherence to their system has enabled the Ice to breeze through several of the WHL’s top teams en route to the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

On The Blue Line: Buffalo Sabres’ prospect Brayden McNabb has anchored a stifling Kootenay defense corps. McNabb provides plenty of offense from the point, runs the power play, and has helped the Ice to an 88.8% penalty killing success rate throughout their playoff run. Veterans James Martin, Joey Leach and Hayden Rintoul provide solid defensive play, mobility and strong puck movement. Collectively, the Ice defense corps has enjoyed success in shutting down some of the WHL’s biggest stars like Brayden Schenn, Linden Vey and Nino Niederreiter through their run to the WHL championship.

Goaltending: 19-year-old Nathan Lieuwen took his game to another level during the 2011 WHL playoffs, posting a 16-2-1 record with three shutouts along with a 2.24 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage while starting all 19 post-season contests for Kootenay. ICE Leave Tomorrow

The Kootenay ICE had a goal at the start of the year and are half way there as the WHL Ed Chynoweth Cup Champions head to Mississauga for the Memorial Cup.

The ICE went to the 2000 Memorial Cup in 2000 and quickly returned home after losing their 3 round robin games. 5 players from the 2000 team were on the roster when the club went back to the tournament in 2002 and won the trophy. It’s no longer best-of-7 playoff series as the tournament uses the round-robin format and the ICE are focusing on how to approach the event. Forward Joe Antilla says they’re trying to keep it low key. “I think just staying calm. Just being yourselves, we got a good group with character guys and we if stick together like we have been and have fun with it then we’ll be fine.”

Assistant Coach Todd Johnson won a Memorial Cup as a player with the 1992 Kamloops Blazers as says it’s been gratifying to be a part of a coaching staff to get to the tournament. “As a player you don’t know how far you’ve come from the start of the year. As a coach you watch the development and watch the guys grow and become a team. To have a hand in that in completely different than when you were a player. As a player you just played and did the best you could.”
Johnson knows what to expect at the Memorial Cup and says there is a lot of hype. “There is a lot of media attention when you get there. There is more downtime, more than we had in any of the travel we’ve had so far. As a coaching staff we’ll keep them busy when we get there but rest is very important too so it’s a fine line.”

Forward Max Reinhart says the players are happy there are people from the club that have Memorial Cup experience. “It’s good we have Todd (Johnson) who has been there. We have a few people from the organization that have been to the last one (2002). They know what it’s about and they know the best ways to avoid boredom and all that. We’ve got guys here who know what they are doing so it’ll e all right.”

The ICE will play 3 round robin games against teams they have never seen before and Antilla says it’ll be learning experience every day. “We’ll always watch video and watch tendencies to see what kind of things they do. Until you’re in the game you don’t really understand them. After the 1st period of every game is where we’ll probably understand what we have to do.”
Reinhart says they have to be ready to play their own game. “I think it’s going to come down to who is the most focused and most hungry to win each game.”

Johnson says every game is important but you don’t have to treat them all like a game 7. “You could lose a game and still get to the final, you could lose 2 games and still end up Memorial Cup Champions. I really feel is we can play 4 or 5 games with the same mindset I think we have a very good chance. Every game is important and to get our team prepared for every game will be important”

By winning the WHL Championship the ICE now have a chance to get their main goal, the Memorial Cup.

OHL Update

Owen Sound Attack 3 vs. Mississauga St. Michael's Majors 2 OT

http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/article/owen-sound-attack-are-2011-ohl-champions/98693

For the first time in franchise history the Owen Sound Attack are OHL Champions winning the Robertson Cup in dramatic fashion with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors before a sold out Hershey Centre crowd of 5,517 in the seventh and deciding game of the Rogers OHL Championship Series.

Attack rookie Jarrod Maidens scored twice including the game-winner banging home a loose puck off a scramble just 3:27 into the extra frame to give Owen Sound their third overtime win of the series.

"I was just praying it was going to cross the line," said Maidens. "We have a great group of guys and we deserved it, it feels amazing."

This marks just the third time in OHL history where Game seven of the Championship Series was decided in overtime and the first since 1996 when the Peterborough Petes beat the Guelph Storm 8-7, while North Bay also beat Detroit 5-4 in overtime in Game seven of the 1994 finals. This is also the second time in three years for the Robertson Cup to be awarded following an overtime win as Playoff MVP Taylor Hall netted the winner in Game five of the 2009 finals for the Windsor Spitfires against the Brampton Battalion.

"This was such a great series and I give all the credit in the world to Mississauga who have a tremendous team," said Attack Head Coach Mark Reeds. "For our team, our ownership, and our fans this is a special day. Our fans that made the trip down from Owen Sound have been with us the whole way and we look forward to them supporting us again next week."

All four regulation goals were scored in the opening 20 minutes beginning with Mike Halmo's fifth of the playoffs at 4:14. Stuart Percy tied the game for the Majors at 7:26 before Maidens regained the Attack lead at 12:34. Jordan Mayer scored the other Majors goal, his ninth of the playoffs on the power play at 14:48.

"What a great win," said Attack captain Garrett Wilson. "This was a new experience for us but everyone knew what we had to do. When the goal went in I just jumped and I think I was the first guy in the pile. This is the best feeling of my life."

The Attack will celebrate their first Robertson Cup since moving to Owen Sound from Guelph in 1989. This will however be the third time the city of Owen Sound will celebrate a Robertson Cup as the Greys won the cup as a member of the OHA in 1924 and 1927.

Robby Mignardi was voted winner of the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as Playoff MVP with 15 goals and nine assists for 24 points in 22 games.

"I can't even describe what this means," said Mignardi. "To win a championship on top of this award is even better, and to do it for this organization makes it special."

Jordan Binnington made 25 saves to earn his second win of the series and just his fourth of the playoffs. JP Anderson made 26 saves despite the loss.

The Majors will open the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup on Friday night against the QMJHL Champion while the Attack will face the Kootenay Ice on Saturday night. Both games are at 7:00 pm and can be seen live on Rogers Sportsnet.

Quotes

ICE GM Jeff Chynoweth
On winning the WHL Championship
"It's tough to put into words. first and foremost I am so proud of this group of players and coaching staff. We've been here a long time and have a lot of success but this group was special right from day one. The leadership group is unbelievable. The three coaches have done a great job in bringing everybody together. I'm so happy for them and it's something I think I'll never forget."

On what makes this years team so special.
"Even our Memorial Cup runs in 2000 and 2002 we never put streaks like this together. To win that many games at the end (15 of the last 16), they just worked so hard. They bought into the system, they're are no egos on this team. If you're going to win a championship you need that because you're going to face some adversity, you're going to have some ups and downs. I think back to game 4 in Moose Jaw, we were down 2-1 and that was the adversity. In the Crushed Can, a tough building and we came through and just kept going from there. Really nice to finish tonight with probably our most complete game of the final for sure and probably between that and game 2 in Medicine Hat our 2 best games of the playoffs"

On Brayden McNabb handing him the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
"A bunch of emotions obviously. I'd be lying if I told you I don't look at that banner (Ed Chynoweth Hall of Fame Banner at the Rec-Plex) every night we play. My Mom's in Arizona and she sends little messages for us saying some one's smiling down on us. He'd be very proud, he'd be very proud of this organization, he'd be very proud of the job Kris Knoblauch, Todd Johnson and Jerry Bancks did and how the 23 players came together."

Nathan Lieuwen
On winning WHL Playoff MVP.
"It could have gone to anybody so really I could give to anybody in that room. Cody (Eakin), Brayden (McNabb), (Matt) Fraser, (Max) Reinhart, so many guys played well."

On watching the team play.
"Spectacular. The defensive play, the offense, everything, the forecheck, it's beautiful to watch."

Steele Boomer
On winning the WHL Championship
"It's surreal. When we started this year we all knew we had a good team. We picked up Eaks (Cody Eakin) at the deadline and we just came together after that. We just found a way to play together as a team. We found a way to win as a team. We just kept going with it. Game plan stayed the same from game 1 against Moose Jaw right through until game 5 tonight. It's just an amazing feeling the best feeling in the world right now."

On ICE
"We just wanted it so bad. Everyone goes on the ice and they want to do it for the guy beside them. All the time. It's amazing when you see guys block shots like (Hayden) Rintoul blocked one with his face today. When guys do that for each other you know that you have good team and a special thing going."

On the last 30 seconds of the clinching game.
"I was just busy hugging the guys. That's the best part as you get share with all the guys that have worked with you. The Ed Chynoweth Cup, it's great to do it for Jeff. It's pretty amazing."

Matt Fraser
On winning the WHL Championship.
"Words can't even describe what's going on right now. No one can even contain themselves they're so excited. Everyone is enjoying the moment right now. We always talk about living in the moment in our dressing room."

On 2 goals in the clinching game.
" The goals are nice but you're more worried about getting the job done. The goals are what win you games but there's so many plays that contribute to the win. Little things, getting pucks in and pucks out and just little things like that."

On winning in the playoffs.
"You look at the guys in that room. Everyone's battered, everyone is bruised, everyone wants more. There is no quit, there is no satisfaction in our room."

On winning 15 of the last 16 games.
"I won't say who I got it from but I got a text from a Tigers' player who said the thing about the Kootenay ICE is everyone of the guys will go through the wall for the guy sitting next to them. I thought that was one of the neatest texts to get especially from an opposing player. The heart that our team has, the character that we have in that dressing room, that leadership we have from everyone, everyone does something for us. We want to be winners, we know it's not going to be easy and that's the biggest thing as we know what we gotta do to be successful and we gotta play that way."
