ICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE enter this week’s action with a 39-19-3-2 record (19-9-2-1 at home, 20-10-1-1 on the road, 4-3 in overtime, 5-2 in shootouts) and in fourth place in the EASTERN CONFERENCE and fifth place overall in the WHL…KOOTENAY will finish the 2009-2010 regular season with an above .500 record for the 11th consecutive season, which is the longest active streak in the WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE…The ICE have clinched a playoff spot for the 12th consecutive season and have posted a 34-8-3-2 record since October 30th…KOOTENAY will play five of their remaining nine regular season games at home.

EKCCU NIGHT: On February 27th when KOOTENAY hosts LETHBRIDGE it will be EAST KOOTENAY COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION NIGHT…EKCCU will be raising money for the KOOTENAY CHILD HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE with their orange puck toss.

HOCKEYVILLE: When the ICE host the HURRICANES on February 27th the CRANBROOK HOCKEYVILLE COMMITTEE will be hosting a tailgate party…CBC television will be in town to video tape CRANBROOK in its bid to be KRAFT HOCKEYVILLE for 2010…Everyone is encouraged to come and take part in the festivities.

JERSEY OFF THE BACK NIGHT: On March 5th when KOOTENAY hosts MEDICINE HAT it will be JERSEY OFF THE BACK NIGHT…Fans at the game will have the opportunity to bid on the new white RBK Edge Jerseys…The winning bid on each jersey will get to meet the player after the game and will receive their jersey at the conclusion of the playoffs…All the money raised will go to the KOOTENAY ICE Scholarship Fund.

INJURY: BROCK MONTGOMERY will be out of the ICE line up two to three weeks with a shoulder injury.

Hockeyville Reminder

The Kootenay ICE along with the Cranbrook Hockeyville Committee are asking fans to bring in any unused season tickets by Monday, February 22nd. Tickets will be collected at the Kootenay ICE Office and at Guest Services this Friday during the game.
The tickets will be used to bring in Minor Hockey Teams from surrounding areas for the Saturday, February 27th game against Lethbridge. Prior to the start of the game the Hockeyville Committee will be hosting a Tailgate Party at the Cranbrook Rec Plex.
CBC will be in Cranbrook on Saturday, February 27 to video tape Cranbrook for its bid for Kraft Hockeyville.

ICE Alumni Engaged To A Celebrity

Former ICE Captain Mike Comrie and actress and singer Hilary Duff are engaged. Reports say the two were engaged last weekend while vacationing in Hawaii.

Kootenay 3 Medicine Hat 1 Game #63

Kootenay ICE forward Kevin King had 2 assists in 3-1 win in Medicine Hat.
Dustin Sylvester, Steele Boomer and Max Reinhart had the goals.
Todd Mathews made 22 saves, 12 in the 3rd periord, for his 29th win.
With the win and Swift Current's regulation loss to Prince Albert, the ICE have clinched a playoff spot for the 12th consecutive season.

It's the 4th meeting of the season, ICE lead the series 2-1 with the road team winning 2 of the 3 games.
ICE are coming off a 2-1 overtime shootout win in Lethbridge.
Tigers shutout Moose Jaw last night 4-0.
ICE are 4th in the East Conference, 5 points ahead of the 5th place Tigers.
Afetr tonight the ICE and Tigers play each other 2 more times this season.
Matt Fraser could return to the lineup after missing last night's game with a facial injury.
ICE magic numer to clinch a playof spot is 5 points.

Kootenay ICE Captain Dustin Sylvester scored the only goal in the overtime shootout in a 2-1 win over Lethbridge.

Spokane 6 Kootenay 4 Game #61

Cranbrook, BC – Spokane Chiefs beat the Kootenay ICE 6-4 in WHL action on Friday night.

Chiefs opened the scoring early in the game as Kenton Miller stole the puck in the ICE zone and Anthony Bardaro took it to the low slot and beat the goalie low on the glove side.
Stefan Ulmer made it 2-0 with a screened shot from the blueline.
ICE got within a goal as Matt Fraser scored from behind the net that banked off the back of the goalie.
Fraser got involved in a fight and didn’t return.
Spokane regained a 2 goal lead as the Kyle Beach scored his league leading 46th as he was left open in front of the net and one-timed a pass from Blake Gal.

ICE scored 2 goals in less than 2 minutes to tie the game 3-3.
Dustin Sylvester caught a high pass at the Chiefs blueline and went in on a shorthanded breakaway and scored with a high shot on the stick side. It was his 3rd SHG of the year and 13th of his career.
After the penalty to Jesse Ismond ended he came out of the penalty box and knocked Mitch Wahl down at centre ice to send Max Reinhart on a 2-on1 break and he scored with a wrist shot high on the glove side.
ICE took a 4-3 lead as Brayden McNabb scored onfrom the left wing boards the beat the screened goalie high on the glove side.
Spokane tied the game 26 seconds later as Ulmer got his 2nd of the game with a long shot from the blueline that went off the goalies arm into the net.

Chiefs scored early in the 3rd period as Ulmer’s long point shot was stopped but the rebound went to Brady Brassary had on open net.
Levko Koper added an empty net just before the buzzer.

It was the first time in ICE history they would go an entire game without a power-play opportunity.

ICE scratches – Brock Montgomery 3rd game (shoulder 2-3 weeks) and Luke Paulsen.

The ICE will visit Lethbridge on Saturday.

The Kootenay ICE will host Spokane tonight.
This is the 5th and final meeting of the season with the ICE leading the season series 3-1.
The ICE are coming off their 1st regulation home loss in 9 weeks in 2-1 decision to Swift Current on Tuesday.
The Chiefs have won 5 in a row and beat Kamloops 7-0 on Wednesday.
ICE are in 4th place in the East and the Chiefs are 5th in the West.
The Kootenay ICE have 12 games left in the season and could clinch a playoff spot this weekend.
Their magic number is 7 points, any combination of earning points and Prince Albert not earning points adding up to 7 would guarantee a spot into the post season.

Jersey Auction

Cranbrook, BC -- The Kootenay ICE Hockey Club has announced they will be putting their new white RBK Edge Game Worn jerseys up for auction.
On Friday, March 5 when the ICE host the Medicine Hat Tigers it will be Jersey Off The Back Night and fans will have the opportunity to place bids on the white jerseys during the game. The winning bid on each jersey will get to meet the players after the game and then will receive their jersey at the conclusion of the playoffs. Also up for silent auction that evening will be a limited amount of WHL practice jerseys. All proceeds from the auction will go towards the Kootenay ICE Scholarship Fund.

CTV in Cranbrook

Tomorrow Finnegan’s Wake is hosting a Scott Niedermayer Hockey Rally. CTV will be bringing their cameras to Finnegan’s to do a feature on Cranbrook’s hockey pride. Wear your hockey jerseys and watch Team Canada take on Switzerland. The hockey rally starts at 5:30, but get there early.

Cranbrook, BC – Swift Current forward Justin Dowling had 1 goal and 1 assist in a 2-1 win over the Kootenay ICE in WHL action on Tuesday night.

Broncos opened the scoring as Justin Dowling fired a wrist shot over the shoulder on the goalies stick side.

In the 2nd period the ICE scored on the powerplay as Jesse Ismond found James Martin sneaking in from the bluelien and had an open net and put the puck in on the backhand.
Broncos regained the lead on a 2-man advantage as Travis Bobbee scored on a one-timer that dribbled through the goalie and barely crossed the goal line.

ICE scratches – Brock Montgomery 2nd game (shoulder 2-3 weeks) and Jagger Dirk.

ICE will host Spokane on Friday.

Kootenay 6 Saskatoon 3 Game #59

Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE forwards Jesse Ismond and Kevin King had 2 goal games in 6-3 win over the Saskatoon Blades in WHL action on Sunday night.

The ICE opened the scoring as the Blades goalie dove to try and cover up the puck in front of his crease but failed to find it and that left an open net behind him for Kevin King who backhanded it into the empty net.
While shorthanded Gaelan Patterson goes on a breakaway and is tripped by Jesse Ismond and was awarded a penalty shot. Patterson went for a wrist shot that was stopped by the goalies right pad.

Blades tied the game while shorthanded as on a 2-on-1 break Gaelen Patterson beat the goalie with a wrist shot.
ICE regained the lead on the power-play as Hayden Rintoul made a great pass to Jesse Ismond near the crease and one-timed the shot.
Ismond got his 2nd of the game after receiving a cross ice pass from Joe Antilla and his one-timer deflected off a blade stick and fluttered into the net.
On a power-play Steele Boomer goes coast-to-coast and then from the corner fed Kevin King crashing the net and he flips it in for his 2nd of the game.
The ICE scored their 3rd power-play goal of the period while the Blades are being called for another penalty, the ICE pulled their goalie and on a goal mouth scramble Max reinhart got the goal.

Blades made things interesting midway through the 3rd period on goals by Jeremy Boyer and Brent Benson that came 47 seconds apart.
Lukas Sutter assisted on on of the goals for his 1st career point in his 1st game.
Steele Boomer put the game away with a breakaway goal as he went with a backhand deke that he lifted over the goalies blocker arm.

It's the 4th and final meeting of the season, the ICE lead the season series 2-1.
The ICE are coming off a 5-2 win in Edmonton on Friday.
The Blades are playing their 3rd road game in 3 nights after earning wins in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.
ICE are 4th in the Conference and the Blades are 1st.
ICE are 3 points behind Calgary and 3 ahead of Medicine Hat. The Hitmen play this afternoon, so by gametime the ICE could be up to 5 points behind.
Dustin Sylvester has 6 points in his last 2 games and is in 3rd placed in the WHL scoring race, 1 point behind Craig Cunningham and Jordan Eberle.

The Kootenay ICE are in Edmonton tonight.
This is the 4th meeting of the season between the clubs, the ICE lead the season series 3-0.
The last meeting was last month when Jesse Ismond scored a hat-trick in a game that started in the morning.
ICE go into the weekend in 4th place in the East Conference, 3 points behind Calgary and 1 point ahead of Medicine Hat.

Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE Captain Dustin Sylvester had 2 goals and 1 assist in a 5-2 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors in WHL action on Tuesday night.

Warriors opened the scoring as Cody Smuk’s long shot from the blueline was stopped by the goalie but a big rebound was found by Jesse Paradis and scored on the stick side.
ICE tied the game 1-1 on the powerplay as Dustin Sylvester was allowed to get to the middle slot and his low shot went through the screened goalie.
It’s the second time Sylvester has reached the 30-goal mark in his career.

The Warriors regained the lead early in the second period as Jason Bast fed Spencer Edwards with a pass to the crease and he redirected it into the net.
With the clubs playing 4-on-4 Sylvester fed defenseman Ryan Molle in the middle slot and his wrist shot went of the goalies’ blocker and into the net.
The ICE took the lead 3-2 lead as Kevin King from the corner threw a pass to the low slot and Sylvester reached out and deflected the puck high into the net.

In the third period the ICE made it 4-2 as James Martin Martin on a stretch pass go it to Joe Antilla and he went in on the breakaway and scored on a wrist shot high on the glove side.
ICE added insurance late in the game as Matt Fraser created a turnover and came in on a 2-on-1 break and fired a wrist shot on the blocker side.

ICE scratches – Luke Paulsen & Brendan Hurley.

ICE will visit Edmonton on Friday.

The Kootenay ICE are in Regina tonight.
This is the 4th and final meeting of the season, with the ICE leading the season series 2-1. Each team has won a game in the other teams' building in an overtime shootout.
ICE are coming off a 4-0 loss in Brandon last night.
The Pats have lost 3 overtime shootout games in a row this week and lost to Saskatoon last night.
The ICE are wrapping up a part of their schedule where they have played 9 of 11 games on the road. Their record is 7-2-0-1.

Matt Fraser shares thoughts on Final #'s of Shoot for the Star

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who supported the Shoot for the Star fundraiser. I would also like to thank East Kootenay Foundation for Health for recognizing me with a 2009 Community Builder of the Year nomination. I am humbled by this honour.

There are a number of people I need to thank as I will be the first to admit, I didn’t get here alone!

At the top of that list is Donna Grainger – thanks for all of your work to make our campaign a success and more importantly for your faith in me. I came to her with an idea, but she really was the brains behind this operation and I couldn’t have accomplished all of this without her help and guidance.

Mel would kill me if I didn’t thank her next! That is a joke really, but I can’t say enough about my billet family ~ Bill and Mel Graham. They go way beyond just food and shelter – they are great role models and like most parents, they always encourage me to do what’s right. They are happy for every success I have both on and off the ice and like all ICE billet families they put up with a lot! They have welcomed me not only into their home but into their family and I will forever be grateful to them.

I would also like to thank the Kootenay ICE organization and my teammates, and also Denny’s Restaurant for their support of the Starlite Campaign to raise money for the foundation. They came on board early, were always willing to lend a hand and they were 100% behind me from start to finish.

Through my fundraising, I heard many gut wrenching stories of people who have friends and family dealing with cancer. I was privileged to hear many “feel good” stories too, people who went above and beyond to help. I think of Hannah who gave me the money from her piggy bank, Cooper and the hockey team who organized a bottle drive and gave us the proceeds and all those hockey fans and others who chose to donate.

There are too many people to mention but I would like everyone to know that I have ended this campaign a different person that I started it.

Many people ask about my story so I will share a little with you. I was in Grade 6 when my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Both her parents had battled this disease and my Grandma passed away just a few weeks before my mom was diagnosed. Our family was stunned by this news and although they tried to shield my sister and me from too many details, I remember thinking that everyone dies if they have cancer. I now know that this isn’t always true, but at the time, it was a thought that shattered my world.

I know a couple of past and present teammates have mom’s battling cancer and last summer, when Mel’s mom was diagnosed, I started to think that “cancer” was a cause I should devote some energy to.

My focus is and has to be hockey, however Shoot for the Star has made me realize how small that is compared to what some people deal with. I feel privileged to have made a difference in the life of any Cranbrook person who comes face to face with this disease.

It is truly amazing that we started with a goal of $5,000 to light one star and in the end lit two and raised $14,111.97 thanks to donations and proceeds from the NHL jersey auction all in support for the Shoot for the Star. I want to thank all those who believed in this fundraiser.

Cranbrook is a wonderful place to play hockey and call home and it will hold a special place in my heart long after my hockey playing days are done.

Although this fundraiser is over, I really encourage you to continue to donate to healthcare by supporting East Kootenay Foundation for Health (www.ekfh.ca).

Kootenay 2 Regina 1 SO Game #53

The Kootenay ICE won the overtime shootout 2-1 to win the game 2-1 in Regina.
In regulation the ICE gor their lone goal from Matt Fraser on 2-man advantage.
In the shootout Max Reinhart and Jesse Ismond scored the goals and Todd Mathews stopped 2 of 3 shots.
It was the 5th time in their history the 2 teams would go to a shootout and the road team has won every game.
Captain Dustin Sylvester didn't play as he has the flu but should return Wednesday in Moose Jaw.
