Fundraising Fraser Flowers
Kootenay ICE’s Matt Fraser delivers a surprise Starlite bouquet to his billet mom, Mel Graham (left) with ICE Education Coordinator Nella Rounsville sharing in on the fun.
The bouquets are being offered at a cost of $25 (taxes & delivery charges not included) with $5 from the sale of each bouquet being donated back to support Matt’s Shoot for the Star fundraiser. The Starlite Bouquet is a special initiative for the Cranbrook/Kimberley only and does not pertain to orders outside of the area.
For hockey fans wishing to order bouquets in January there is an option of having a special delivery by Matt and some ICE helpers on Thursday, January 27, 2011.
To place an order, simply contact Grower Direct at 250 426.6006 or toll-free 1-800-892-3493 and ask for the Starlite Bouquet.
Last year Matt’s efforts focused on raising $5,000 to light one star; however in the end the generosity of hockey fans, some fundraising initiatives by Matt with his teammates and various community groups, the Shoot for the Star fundraiser realized over $14,900 which lit the sky with two stars and almost three. The money raised by the likeable left-winger was dedicated to purchasing a node biopsy probe to assist breast cancer patient surgery here at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.
As Matt approaches his last year with the Kootenay ICE, he wants to say thanks to all those who helped him reach last year’s goal by asking for your support once again to support the EKFH Starlite Campaign in support of seniors programs in the region.

Cranbrook Granted Conditional WMBL Franchise!
We are very excited to announce that the City of Cranbrook is one step closer to having a Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) franchise playing in the summertime.
Representatives from the Home Run Society recently attended the WMBL Board of Governors meeting, where a pitch was made for a franchise for Cranbrook. The Board of Governors voted unanimously to grant Cranbrook a conditional franchise, with the main hurdle being the lack a WMBL-ready stadium.
"Our society has been working towards this goal since 2006," said Garry Slonowski, President of the Home Run Society. "We are ecstatic at the prospect of having this level of baseball in Cranbrook. The WMBL is stable and growing league, and has become part of the summer culture across Western Canada. We are fortunate to be part of its future plans, and we would like to thank the WMBL Board of Governors for their consideration and approval of a conditional franchise."
The WMBL is the premier baseball league in Western Canada, and boasts a 56 year history, having 11 teams throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. The two closest teams to Cranbrook are the Okotoks Dawgs and Lethbridge Bulls, who are perennial powerhouses in the Western Division.
President of the WMBL, Kevin Kvame, is looking forward to his league taking its first step into British Columbia. "The pitch that was made by the Cranbrook Group was very strong, and we see it as a good fit for our league's future plans. Cranbrook is an ideal candidate for expansion - it is a reasonable distance for travel, has a strong business community, a long history of baseball, and a proven track record of supporting its sport franchises. We have a great deal of confidence that Cranbrook would be a wonderful addition to our league."
As part of the presentation, the WMBL Board of Governors was given a sneak peek of the proposed new baseball stadium in Cranbrook. The design of a new stadium is part of the ongoing feasibility study that was funded through the Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives program.
"The feasibility study for a new stadium will be officially completed and presented to the City of Cranbrook in the new year," continued Slonowski. "We have been working with GEC Architecture who designed the Calgary Saddledome, and we are just doing the final financial aspect of how much it will cost to build and operate. We feel the preliminary design is amazing, and will provide a great place for the community to gather and enjoy games under the lights."

Epp For A Million
From TSN ...
Canada's newest millionaire could be Cranbrook, B.C.'s Barry Epp, as the only thing that separates him from $1 million is scoring 15 goals in 24 seconds on New Year's Eve in TSN's fifth annual, international award-winning million-dollar giveaway, the Chevrolet Cruze Million Dollar Shootout.
As part of the contest, Barry will also have the chance to win up to three all-new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Sedans for himself and two friends.
The big event will air live nationally on December 31 during the first intermission of the IIHF Wolrd Junior Championship broadcast featuring Canada vs. Sweden (game starts at 4pm et/1pm pt on TSN).
Born and raised in Cranbrook, B.C., sales consultant Barry Epp, 63, lives, breathes and sleeps hockey.
He played recreational hockey and coached his sons' pee-wee and bantam teams in Prince Rupert, B.C. He counts Bobby Orr, Scott Niedermayer and Jonathan Toews among his favourite NHL players, and lists the Vancouver Canucks and defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks as his favourite sports teams. He is currently preparing for the Chevrolet Cruze Million Dollar Shootout with daily on-ice practices.
Barry is no stranger to the Chevrolet Million Dollar Shootout promotion, as he was in the stands at General Motors Place in Vancouver when Darwin Head of Prince Albert, SK, won it all during the Chevrolet Malibu Million Dollar Shootout in 2008, netting four Chevrolet Malibus and $1 million live on TSN.
"Who would've thought that I'd be shooting for one million dollars? This is totally unexpected and beyond my bucket list. I'm really just living the dream right now," said Barry. "The support I've received from family and friends so far has been amazing. I'm confident that I will be able to give them something special to celebrate on New Year's Eve."
As the selected participant, Barry receives a trip to Buffalo, NY, for himself and five friends. On December 31, Barry and his two shooters - son Shane Epp and friend Chris Kirwan - will head to centre ice during the first intermission, where they will each have 15 seconds to shoot 10 pucks at an open net (30 pucks in total).
Depending on the number of total goals scored as a group, prizes will be awarded as follows:
5-9 goals - Barry wins a new Chevrolet Cruze
10 goals or more - Barry, Shane and Chris all win a new Chevrolet Cruze
Immediately following the group shots at centre ice, Barry will move back to the far blue line where he will have 24 seconds to shoot 20 pucks into an open net. If Barry scores 15 or more goals within the allotted time, he is eligible to win $1 million in a one-time payout.*
One day prior to the shootout, Barry, Shane and Chris will hone their wrist shots in a special one-hour private practice session with Hall of Fame defenceman and Chevrolet Hockey Ambassador Bobby Orr at HSBC Arena in Buffalo on December 30 at 11:15 a.m. ET.
Barry was randomly chosen from nearly 7.2 million total online entries. In total, Barry accumulated 209 entries over the course of this year's Chevrolet Cruze Million Dollar Shootout promotion

Canada Camp Day 2
From Hockey Canada website ...
CIZIKAS NETS GAME WINNER IN FINAL INTRASQUAD GAME AT WORLD JUNIOR CAMP
TORONTO - Who said this year's Canadian junior team can't score goals?
Six goals were scored in under seven minutes of a wild third period as Casey Cizikas got the game-winner and Linden Veh added the empty-net tally in Team White's 7-5 victory over Team Red in an intrasquad game Monday night at the selection camp for Canada's world junior championship team.
There has been concern that the squad lacks the firepower of recent Canadian teams, but it didn't look that way on this night.
"Everyone says we don't have much offence but it shows that even if we don't have the John Tavares and the Taylor Halls, we have people who can put the puck in the net," said Red team forward Zack Kassian. "They're making cuts (Tuesday) so everyone wanted to give it that extra oomph.
"Everyone played hard and we're leaving a hard decision for the coaches."
Cody Eakin and Jared Cowen also scored in the third for White, which had earlier scores from Kassian, Ryan Johansen and Brendan Gallagher.
Jaden Schwartz and Curtis Hamilton scored in the first frame while Ryan Howse, Rielly Smith and Carter Ashton had goals in the third for Red, which outshot White 34-28.
It was a second intrasquad game in as many nights, after Red's 4-1 win on Sunday, and jittery play was replaced by more determined, desperate hockey in the last chance for some to show the coaches what they can do.
The first cuts are to be announced Tuesday morning, with the full 22-man roster named on Wednesday.
"It's never an easy thing waiting on a call to see if you made the cut, but if you worked hard, you can go home and even if you get cut, you know you left it all out there," added Kassian.
The stocky Schwartz, a solid performer in both games, got his second goal in as many games only 55 seconds in and Hamilton put Red up 2-0 when he beat J.P. Anderson with a 10-foot wrist shot on a feed from Riley Sheahan at 5:10.
Johansen went to the net to tip Ryan Murphy's point shot in on a power play at 18:46 and White took the lead as Kassian scored 51 seconds into the second and Gallagher finished a two-on-one by beating Olivier Roy with a high shot at 9:57.
Both teams then changed goalies. Roy stopped 12 of 15 shots, while Mark Visentin saved nine of 12 for Red. Anderson stopped 10 of 12 and Calvin Pickard saved 19 of 22 on a tough night for all the goaltenders.
"It was one of those full moon nights for the goaltenders, with pucks bouncing off and going in and stuff like that," said coach Dave Cameron.
Most of the lines were shuffled from the first game, except for a strong forechecking line of Sheahan between Hamilton and Marcus Foligno for Red and Sean Couturier with Michael Bournival and Kassian for White.
Defence duos were also changed, including one of six-foot-five Cowen and six-foot-four Erik Gudbranson that Cameron hopes will become his shut down pair.
"Two guys as big as we are, it takes up a lot of space with our sticks and bodies so, if that happens, I think it will be great for us," said Cowen, one of four returning players from last year's team who are almost certain to be kept, along with Ryan Ellis, Calvin de Haan and Brayden Schenn.
Cizikas played through a back problem that flared up when he took a hard hit in the first intrasquad game and was strong enough to post a goal and an assist.
"I don't think there'll be much sleep," he said. "I didn't have a great game the first night but I thought I played better. I had to prove I could deal with pain."

FOLIGNO, ASHTON SCORE AS RED BEATS WHITE IN CANADIAN JUNIOR INTRASQUAD GAME
TORONTO – If Marcus Foligno makes Canada's team for the world junior championship, he'll get to play at home – in Buffalo, N.Y.
Foligno took a big step in that direction on Sunday as the Sudbury Wolves winger scored two goals to lead Team Red to a 4-1 victory over Team White in an intrasquad game at the team selection camp.
"That would be icing on the cake, but just playing for Team Canada is the goal here,” said Foligno, who was born in Buffalo but holds dual Canadian-U.S. citizenship. “Whenever you get a chance to put up some numbers it's good.
“I had a couple more chances I'd like to have put in too. (Linemates) Riley Sheahan and Curtis Hamilton are good guys to play with too.”
The world juniors begin Dec. 26 in Buffalo, when Canada will play its first game against Russia.
Foligno is the son of former NHL sniper and ex-Buffalo Sabre Mike Foligno. His older brother Nick, who skates for the Ottawa Senators, has played in two world championships for the U.S.
Nick came up through the U.S. national development team while the family lived in the Buffalo area, while Marcus spent his formative years in Sudbury, Ont., where their father moved to coach the junior Wolves. Mike Foligno has since become an assistant coach with the Anaheim Ducks, while Marcus remained in Sudbury.
“It's been like that the whole time, it's fun and it makes for a good rivalry,” Foligno said of his brother.
Coach Dave Cameron said Foligno played well but did not want to address the play of individual players.
Carter Ashton, whose father Brent also had a long NHL career, also scored and Jaden Schwartz had the other goal for Red while Louis Leblanc replied for Team White.
“It was a good pace out there, a little scrambly, but that's what you expect in the first game,” said Leblanc, the Montreal Juniors scoring star. “It feels good. You want to score when you can. It breaks the ice and gives you confidence.”
A second intrasquad game is to be held Monday night at the Mastercard Centre, the Toronto Maple Leafs' practice rink, while a game is set for Tuesday night against a team of university players.
A scoreless first period was marked by an imposing rush to the net by Foligno that was thwarted by a fine save by Calvin Pickard, while White's Ryan Johansen later fired from in close but was stopped on a blocker save by Mark Visentin.
A White penalty had just ended when Riley Sheahan provoked a turnover and Foligno backhanded a shot past Pickard inside the near post from the edge of the crease 42 seconds into the second frame.
Ashton was tangled up with defenceman Erik Gudbranson in front of the White goal when Brett Connolly's pass went in off his skate at 16:42.
Only 42 seconds into the third, Leblanc combined with defenceman Ryan Ellis and Johansen to score on a snap shot from the right wing past Olivier Roy.
Schwartz banged in the rebound of a shot by 17-year-old Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at 7:39. Foligno stole the puck from Gudbranson and went in alone to deke Anderson in the final minute.
Both teams changed goalies at 9:42 of the second, with Roy replacing Visintin and J.P. Anderson in for Pickard.
The coaching staff watched and took notes from the seats as former NHL players Todd Harvey (White) and Scott Walker (Red) changed the lines from the benches.
Notes: Defenceman Dylan Olsen of the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Schwartz of Colorado College arrived Sunday, a day late after being stranded by snow in Minnesota … With only a small seating area at the rink, selling tickets was out of the question. Hockey Canada held a drawing among its social media followers to give out 20 pairs of tickets per game to fans. Between them, some players' families and a large group of scouts, there were about 200 in attendance.
