Cranbrook, BC – The Kootenay ICE beat the Calgary Hitmen 5-2 in WHL action on Saturday night.
For the 2nd night in a row Joe Antilla would score the 1st goal of the game. Brock Montgomery’s long shot missed the net and came off the end boards and came out the other side and Antilla had an open net.
ICE made it 2-0 as Kevin King won the race for the puck in the Calgary zone and fed Adam Rossignol in the low slot and he got his 1st career goal with a redirection.
In the 2nd period the ICE took a 3-0 lead on a 2-man advantage powerplay as Matt Fraser from the top of the faceoff circle fired a wrist shot that went in off the goalies’ glove hand.
Calgary got that one back as Justin Kirsch stole the puck at the ICE blueline and went on a breakaway and scored with a wrist shot high on the stick side.
ICE made the score 4-1 on a 3-on-1 break as Max Reinhart fed Jesse Ismond on a pass through the crease and scored on a redirection.
Calgary changed goalies as Juraj Holly replaced Micheal Snider.
Snider came back in at 15:39 of the period.
ICE made it 5-1 late in the 2nd period off a faceoff win in the Calgary zone and defenseman Luke Paulsen’s point shot sailed in over the goalies’ glove hand.
Calgary scored early in the 3rd period as defenseman Kyle Schmidt scored his 1st career goal with a point shot that squeaked through the goalies’ legs.
ICE forward Drew Czerwonka left the game in the 1st period and didn’t return.
ICE will visit Calgary on Thursday.
