Cranbrook, BC – The Kootenay ICE tied a Franchise Record with 3 shorthanded goals in a 6-1 win over the Prince Albert Raiders in WHL action on Saturday night.
ICE opened the scoring on powerplay as Matt Fraser from the corner threw the puck towards the net and in beat the goalie near the post.
Fraser leads the club with 6 powerplay goals.
Kevin King made it 2-0 on the rush as he came down the right wing and fired a wrist shot high on the stick side.
ICE made it 3-0 on the powerplay with defenseman Brayden McNabb stepping into a slap shot from the top of the slot and it hit a Raider skate and beat the goalie low on the stick side.
Raiders scored the only goal of the 2nd period on a 2nd rebound chance for Jonathan Parker who got his team leading 14th of the year.
The goal ended Brett Teskey’s shutout streak at 124:47. The last goal he gave up was in the 3rd period against Brandon on October 29th.
ICE scored 3 shorthanded goals in the 3rd period including 2 on the same penalty kill.
Max Reinhart stripped the puck from the Raiders at their blueline and went to the net and scored with a forehand deke.
Defenseman Jagger Dirk created a turnover at the ICE blue line and went for a breakaway and scored with a wrist shot on the stick side.
Dirk has goals in 3 straight games.
On the next penalty kill Kevin King was allowed to step into a long shot that surprised the goalie on the stick side.
The ICE now have 7 shorthanded goals with Reinhart and King each having 2.
Prince Alberts’ Coach/GM Bruno Campese is on a scouting trip this weekend and Assistant Coach Steve Young is the bench boss for their 3 games this weekend.
ICE forward Drew Czerwonka did not play after blocking a shot in the foot in last night’s game and is expected to only miss one game.
ICE will play 9 of the next 10 games on the road starting Tuesday in Red Deer.
