Suspension

Rockets forward Curt Gogol has been suspended 5 games for his charging major against James Martin and the Kootenay ICE on Saturday.
Martin was in a vulnerable position, plus he didn't have the puck and was elbowed in the head.
Martin has a concussion and is out out indefintely.

Injury Update

James Martin is listed as indefinite with a concussion. In the 3rd period in Kelowna on Saturday Rockets' forward Curt Gogol receieved a 5-minute major and game misconduct for a charging major.
This is being reviewed by the league for a possible suspension.
Martin didn't have the puck and was in a vulnerable position when Gogol elbowed Martin in the face.
The league wants to cut out the hits to the head so it'll be interesting to see the length of this suspension.
Ryan Molle should return tomorrow in Chilliwack after suffering a head injury in the 1st period in Kamloops on Friday. He passed the concussion test the next day and has had no problems the last few days.
Drew Czerwonka has a minor concussion after a 1st period fight in Kelowna on Saturday. He is day-to-day. He didn't skate on Monday so is doubtful for the next few games.

10 Things I Think I Think

10 Things I Think I Think is a creation of SI NFL writer Peter King. His Monday Morning Quarterback articles every week are must read for all football fans at si.com. In a tribute to him, which is a nice way of saying I stole his concept, here is my 10 for this week.

1. I think it’s great for the ICE to play the entire B.C. Division in road trip that starts this weekend. 2 years ago the ICE went 4-0-1 on the road against those 5 teams but they didn’t play them all in one trip. They visited Kamloops and Kelowna in November and then Prince George, Chilliwack and Vancouver in February.
2. I think the ICE will be in Kelowna when the Grey Cup is played on Sunday. A few of years ago they were in Kamloops when the Super Bowl was played. You’ll notice the WHL doesn’t schedule games on these days.
3. I think from what we saw last weekend, Regina and Swift Current have teams that are a lot better than their record indicates. They’re both to watched closely as a couple of teams that go on long winning streaks and make a major move up the standings. Last year Kelowna and Brandon were the teams that picked up the pace in the middle part of the season. The Pats main concern is the 6 weeks they’ll be missing Jordan Eberle and Colton Teubert to the WJHC.
4. I think the instigator penalty that includes a 10-minute misconduct, should only be called when a player is on the ice only looking to start a fight. Lately we’ve seen many players defend their teammates after receiving a big hit (legal and illegal) and then be out of the game for 17 minutes. Make it 2 for roughing and 5 for fighting and give the other player 5 minutes.
5. I think the ICE will be fined $500 for their second multiple fight of the season on Saturday against Swift Current. First offence was $250 in the game against Red Deer.
6. I think it’s great to see the support that the WHL play-by-play announcers give to each other. Everyone puts each other links on their blogs and how great are the interviews from around the league on the WHL Radio Show. Good stuff.
7. I think it’s the ICE and Portland that still have room to add an over-ager. Swift Current is the only team that has one too many.
8. I think I haven’t seen WHL head honchos Rob Robison or Richard Doerksen in person this year.
9. I think the best research of the month came from the Pat’s Dan Plaster who had this in the game notes in the game against the ICE. Two of the 11 players in the top 10 WHL scoring -- Brayden Schenn and Igor Revenko are 6-foot-0; the remainder are shorter than that. Brandon Kozun, 5-9; Brendan Shinnimin, 5-10; Jordan Eberle, 5-10; Jordan Weal, 5-9; Willie Coetzee, 5-10; Bretton Cameron, 5-11; Craig Cunningham, 5-10; Cody Eakin, 5-11; and, Matt Calvert, 5-10.
10. I think these are my non-hockey thoughts.
a) It’s funny how many people waited until Saskatchewan beat Calgary on Sunday to suddenly say they are fans of the Green & White. A majority of Roughriders fans let it be known of their support all year long and that is great to see, but I had to smirk at the people who are now making some noise. I expect there will be even more if they win the Grey Cup on Sunday.
b) Baseball free agent signing are coming soon. I predict Roy Halliday will be traded to Boston and Matt Holliday will sign with the Red Sox. Trail native Jason Bay will sign with Seattle. Yankees will get pitcher John Lackey. Just guessing.
c) The new wii game where 4 people can play Mario Brothers at the same time will be a huge seller. Always hated waiting for my turn.

Very quietly, the talk among western Canada scouts has been the rugged play of Moose Jaw's gigantic blue-liner, Dylan McIlrath. At 6-4/212, McIlrath has quickly become the scourge of the West with his mean, nasty disposition and imposing physical presence.
And for a very big man, McIlrath actually possesses some pretty fair puck movement skills, owing to the fact that he was a forward coming up the ranks all the way through his bantam days. We're not saying he's Paul Coffey at the offensive end, just that, while he's still a bit on the raw side in his puck handling, he's got some projectable long-term upside wrapped up in a physical package that makes him one of the toughest enforcers in this year's draft.

Rising:
Beau Bennett (Penticton) — Surprising Californian showed great hands and terrific skills in leading the U.S. to gold at the World Jr. A Challenge. (on Calgary Hitmen list)
Dylan McIlrath (Moose Jaw) — Huge D-man has a mean streak and pretty good puck skills left over from his days as a forward. Red Line's best early line sleeper.
Jason Clark (Shattuck) — The big, slick skating winger has impressed us with excellent offensive instincts and fine stick skills. (on Seattle Thunderbirds list)
Troy Rutkowski (Portland) — Does everything right with the puck and has improved his D-zone play so dramatically he's become good in his own end.

Swift Current 6 Kootenay 2 Game #26

Cranbrook, BC – Cody Eakin and Justin Dowling had 2 goal games as the Swift Current Broncos beat the Kootenay ICE 6-2 in WHL action on Saturday night.

The Broncos opened the scoring as Justin Dowling split the ICE defense at the blueline and had a mini-breakaway and scored with high backhand.
Broncos made it 2-0 on another breakaway as Taylor Vause scored on wrist shot.
ICE changed goalies as Nathan Lieuwen replaced Todd Mathews.
Mathews went back in net 1:31 later.
ICE got on the board on a power-play as defenseman James Martin just missed on a back door play but stayed on the puck behind the net a fed Matt Fraser cruising through the low slot and connected on a one-timer.
Broncos regained the 2-goal lead on a scramble near the net and Stepan Novotny had an open net for the easy goal.

There were no goals in the 2nd period but there was a signifigant point of the game. ICE defenseman Ryan Molle went after Michael Stickland after the Broncos forward hit Drew Czerwonka. During the fight Dustin Sylvester and Derek Claffey engaged in a fight and received game misconducts. Then a 3rd fight developed as Joey Leach took on Reece Scarlett. Leach delivered a big punch that knocked Scarlett down and there was a huge puddle of blood on the ice. Leach showed class by stopping his punches once he saw the Bronco was in some difficulty. Both players also received game misconducts.

In the 3rd period the Broncos added insurance early in the 3rd period an another breakaway as Cody Eakin got his league leading 23rd goal.
ICE won a faceoff in the Broncos zone and defenseman James Martin scored on a slapshot high on the stickside.
Broncos added 2 powerplay goals by Cody Eakin and Justin Dowling to finish the game with the 6-2 win.
ICE changed goalies again as Lieuwen replaced Mathews.

It was the 2nd meeting of the season with Swift Current winning 3-1 on October 12th.

ICE Scratches – Brayden McNabb 8th game (knee day-to-day), Dominik Pacovsky 1st game (foot day-to-day) and Petr Senkerik.

1. I think based on history, the ICE are close to making another roster move. Traditionally the club goes through the season with 22 players (13 forwards, 7 defensemen and 2 goalies). Right now they have 8 defensemen. Based on playing time the #6-#8 spots are James Martin, Cason Machacek and Luke Paulsen. The ICE have 5 18-year old defensemen on their roster and probably don’t want to have 5 19-year defensemen next year. Martin has played forward at times this year. The ICE may not make any move at all and go on with 23 players. Remember the club still has an spot open for another over-ager.
2. I think in games against the ICE the best forward performances have come from Prince Albert’s Igor Revenko (4 goals in 2 games) and Red Deer’s Willie Coetzee (4 goals and 5 points in 2 games).
3. I think the best opposition rookie performances against the ICE came from the Rebels’ Ryan Nugent Hopkins (1 goal and 5 points in 2 games) and Medicine Hat’s Emerson Etem (4 goals in 2 games).
4. I think the best performances by opposition defensemen were from Moose Jaw’s Travis Hamonic and Calgary Michael Stone. Both had solid all-around showings in 2 games each against the ICE. Tigers’ Mark Isherwood had a 4-point game against the ICE.
5. I think the best performance by a goalie against the ICE was Seattle’s Calvin Pickard. The ICE won 1-0 in overtime. He wasn’t flashy but made many tough saves look easy. Lethbridge's Brandon Anderson made 44 saves against the ICE and Calgary's Michael Snider stole a game with 39 saves.
6. I think the best team the ICE have played in the East Conference is Saskatoon. Big, tough, fast and depth on forward and defense. Calgary and Moose Jaw are a combined 4-0 against the ICE.
7. I think the best team the ICE have played in the West Conference is Portland. They also have good size and speed and good depth. Defense is a little young. I think Tri City may be a better team but had an off night in Cranbrook. The ICE have yet to see a B.C. Division team.
8. I think the WHL vs Russia series is again getting criticized for the quality of players on the Russian roster. In the previous 6 years of the event there has not been one WHL player that I interviewed that didn’t look forward to being in the event and were happy to have played in the game. Are having these games better than the regular All-Star games that the WHL used to have? There were many complaints that the All-Star games were losing their impact of being a special event.
9. I think it’s a little surprising that there were no ICE players ranked in the NHL Central Scouting Services preliminary rankings. Drew Czerwonka and Christian Magnus missed the first ¼ of the season and haven’t been seen by the scouts enough to get recognized. Joey Leach, Brock Montgomery and Max Reinhart should receive consideration as the season continues.
10. I think these are my non-hockey thoughts.
a) I’m looking forward to reading Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback book on the trip through the B.C. Division. Stephen Brunt’s Gretzky book is in the on-deck circle.
b) The CFL East and West Finals are shaping up to be a couple of great games. Who you got?
c) There should be video review for soccer games. There is usually only 1 goal in a game; can’t they be sure it was a legal goal? I know the Irish visitors to the blog agree.
d) I haven’t watched a race this year but NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson is my prediction to win Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year. Champion 4 years in a row. I don’t follow boxing, but the fact I have heard Manny Pacquiao’s name a lot this year, means he should receive consideration. Best fighter in the world?

In the 3rd period the ICE tied the game 3-3 on a 2-on-1 break as Max Reinhart fed Matt Fraser near the crease and made no mistake with a redirection.

In the 2nd period Joey Leach scored with a slap shot from the blueline that beat the screened goalie high on the gloveside.
Tri City changed goalies as Drew Owsley replaced Brett Martyniuk.
ICE rookie Brendan Hurley scored his 1st career goal as he was left alone in front of the net and received a pass from the corner from Pacovsky. Hurley went for the deke, misplayed the puck but in went through the goalies’ legs.
Americans got on the board late in the 2nd period as defenseman Brett Plouffe’s shot from the blueline deflects off an ICE stick, goes very high in the air and lands on the goaline beside the ICE goalie and rolled into the net.

In the 3rd period the ICE made in 5-1 as Steele Boomer poked in a rebound that was free behind the goalie.
Kevin King completed a 2-on-1 break with a backhand shot that went high over the sprawling goalie.
Max Reinhart made it 7-1 on a partial breakaway as he slammed on the brakes near the crease and stuffed the puck in on the forehand.

ICE scratches – Brayden McNabb 4th game (knee 1 week), Luke Paulsen 4th game (ankle day-to-day), Simon Skrudland and Elgin Pearce.
Returning to the line-up were Steele Boomer (missed 1 game flu), Christian Magnus (19 games finger) and Matt Fraser (5 games knee).

This was the first and only meeting this season.
Last year the Americans won 3-0.
Last meeting in Cranbrook was March 1, 2008 and the Americans won 3-2 in an overtime shootout.

The ICE will visit Lethbridge on Sunday and will host Prince Albert on Tuesday.

SI Mock Draft

Allan Muir of SI has a Mock Draft for the 2010 NHL Draft. Here is the top 10, follow the link or the top 30.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/allan_muir/11/06/2010.draft.preview/index.html?eref=sihp

1. Taylor Hall, 6-1, 185, left wing, Windsor Spitfires
The reigning Memorial Cup MVP has his critics ("I wonder about his decision-making sometimes," said one scout) but most agree that Hall is the surest bet to star in the NHL. "Game-breaking speed," said another. "Think Pavel Bure --he's that explosive -- and he's extremely competitive. He doesn't lose many battles." There's a desire to see more consistency from Hall, but a third scout says that's part of the process when a player has been viewed so often. "Look, I can nitpick this kid to death, but if I had the (No. 1) pick, this is the guy I'd want. He's a winner."
2. Cam Fowler, 6-2, 190, defense, Windsor Spitfires
The Windsor-born, Detroit-bred Fowler could end up being the first player taken, depending on the needs of the team with the pick as much as his progression this season. His quick transition to the OHL has scouts raving about his effortless skating and two-way play. Scout's Take: "He's got that projectable, Rob Blake-type body. He's physical and he has a tremendous shot. He just needs to work on getting it to the net. He covers as well as anyone. I like his positioning, but I'd also like to see him make better decisions with the puck. Sometimes he tries to do too much and ends up giving it away."
3. Tyler Seguin, 6-1, 180, center, Plymouth Whalers
A cruiserweight forward with tremendous drive, high-end playmaking skills and a world-class shot -- sound anything like Joe Sakic? Seguin could challenge for the top spot in the draft. Scout's Take: "His development from the beginning of last season to now is off the charts. He has the ability to stickhandle and create at top speed. He's relentless at both ends of the ice. It's easy to project him as a first-line center in the NHL."
4. Brett Connolly, 6-2, 181, left wing, Prince George Cougars
The reigning CHL rookie of the year has a bit of James Neal in him. Scout's Take: "He's not a prototypical power forward, but he plays a very strong game. He's strong on the puck, goes hard to the net. He has a chance to be a solid goal scorer." Second Take: "I like his leadership abilities. He's the sort of player you can go to war with."
5. Kirill Kabanov, 6-3, 176, left wing, Moncton Wildcats
Consistency may be all that keeps Kirill the Thrill from going top five. Scout's Take: "He has everything else you'd want. Great size, quick feet, really smart with the puck. He's one of those players who can really electrify a crowd. And you don't want to compare him to Ovechkin, but he's got the same nastiness to his game. But there are nights when he disappears and at times he's not the most team-oriented guy. You hope it's a maturity thing."
6. Erik Gudbranson, 6-3, 199, defense, Kingston Frontenacs
Based on his size, skating and offensive talents, he has the potential to be a top-pairing offensive defender. But to this point, it's mostly about projection. The hard-hitting Gudbranson's been sidelined since mid-October with a knee injury that should keep him out another two weeks. Scout's Take: "He was okay last season [as a rookie with Kingston]. He gave you glimpses of what he could be. He's so poised and he thinks the game so well, but you want to see more from him."
7. Brandon Gormley, 6-1, 175, defense, Moncton Wildcats
The Prince Edward Island kid who was babysat by Brad Richards' family has lived up to the hype that made him the first overall pick in the QMJHL last summer. He's reliable in his own end, but he'll make his living in the NHL as an offensive-minded defender. Think Sheldon Souray, but without the 100-MPH shot. Scout's Take: "He'll QB a power play, but he can be the shutdown guy on the PK as well."
8. Mikael Granlund, 5-10, 172, right wing, HIFK (Finland)
He's small and Finnish and dominant in his age group, but don't buy into the lazy comparisons to Saku Koivu. Euro Scout's Take: "He doesn't have the same kind of intensity. He's very clever with the puck and has a good shot, though. I like his confidence. He's a 17-year-old kid playing in the top league in Finland and he's leading his team in scoring. He's not fancy but he makes things happen."
9. Vladimir Tarasenko, 5-10, 167, right wing, Novosibirsk (Russia)
Tarasenko is small, but he does his best work down low. He made a strong impression at last year's U-18 championships, finishing second in tournament scoring with 16 points in just seven games. Scout's Take: "He's not the flashiest guy on the ice, but he gets it done. He just weasels his way into open ice and takes it from there. He's strong on the puck and willing to take a hit to get his shot off, but he needs to put on some muscle if he wants to keep playing that way."
10. John McFarland, 6-1. 195, left wing, Sudbury Wolves
Scouts raved about him at the Ivan Hlinka tournament, but he's off to a slow start that has one scout comparing him to another former Wolves star: Benoit Pouliot. Scout's Take: "He has all the tools. Good frame, quick feet, hard shot and he anticipates the play well. But he hasn't committed to his play away from the puck...and maybe there are some other issues that will be addressed as he matures. You wonder if he'll ever put it all together."

Comments

Effective today I will only post comments from people who leave their name ... real name.
I don't mind the thoughts that have been posted but have decided that I don't like people hiding behind anonymous or fake names.
This blog was created through the radio station and is used as an avenue to post infomation that used to only be available by listening to the broadcasts or sportscasts.
I encourage visitors to continue to express comments.
If your first thought is the Kootenay ICE management had a hand in this decision you are 100% wrong. They have never made a suggestion to make any changes.
I enjoy the fact that ICE fans are passionate about their team and get mad when they lose and excited when they win but there are many other places to make comments if you don't want your true identity known.

Nathan Lieuwen Update

Good news as ICE goalie Nathan Lieuwen will be able to continue his hockey career. After visiting a specialist Lieuwen has been diagnosed with a migraine and not a concussion.
Lieuwen is on his way back to Cranbrook and will be allowed to practice again on Monday.

Donaghy A Hurricane

Cranbrook native Dustin Donaghy has been traded to Lethbridge for a 2010 6th round Bantam pick.
He joins Marysville native Carter Bancks.

ICE Welcome Back 2 Players

Defenseman Cason Machacek, who missed 6 games to a concussion, and forward Drew CZerwonka, who was sidelined for 15 games with a leg laceration, will both play against Red Deer this weekend.
That leaves 5 players unavailable - Brayden McNabb (4-6 weeks), Luke Paulsen (2-4 weeks), Matt Fraser (2-4 weeks), Nathan Lieuwen (indefinite) and Christian Magnus (1 week).
Magnus feels he could return on November 11th.
For the weekend 16-year-old list player Kevin Jacyna (Calgary) will be the back-up goalie. Jacyna is a big goalie who earned a spot on the ICE list with a really strong training camp.

1. I think the recent ICE games were as low scoring as some soccer games. The bad news is they scored 5 goals in their 5 game homestand. The good news is they still won 2 of the games. In their last 3 games the club gave up only 5 goals-against and 1 was into an empty. Make the final 1-nil.
2. I think the ICE will have to treat the Brayden McNabb injury like it’s the month of December and players’ are away for the WJHC. Many teams will be missing their top players for 4-6 weeks.
3. I think the next couple of weeks will be normal throughout the WHL. But starting at the end of the month there will be many distractions. At the end of the month there are the 2 WHL vs Russia games. Then in December there are WJHC camps. Then it’s the actual WJHC tournament. Don’t forget the U-17 tournament in December as well. The next few weeks will the last chance for all teams to have their complete teams together.
4. I think it’s surprising to see only 2 teams above .500 in the Central Division.
5. I think it’s surprising to see 5 teams above .500 in the East Division.
6. I think it’s going to be a great battle in the U.S. Division. Portland and Spokane looked great in games against the ICE and we have yet to see the 1st Place Americans. Everett has many games in hand and have a good team as well.
7. I think it was great to see Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard play at the Rec-Plex. He is expected to be a 1st round pick in the NHL Draft this summer. Not a spectacular netminder but plays his position so calmly. Played his angles great, challenged at the right time, anticipated well and no bad rebounds.
8. I think Saskatoon and Tri City have the best teams in the WHL right now. They both have won 11 of 12.
9. I think it was a learning experience to realize that the WHL Video Replay system doesn’t have microphones on the cameras. So if there is a dispute as to if the puck went into the net before the whistle, the replay can’t help and the referees’ decision is final.
10. I think these are my non-hockey thoughts.
a) This is when I start paying attention to the CFL. November football in Canada is the best especially when they play the game outdoors.
b) I can’t imagine how I lived without a PVR.
c) My copy of Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback is on back order so a personal review is still a few weeks away. Hopefully I’ll get it before football season is over.

Kootenay 1 Seattle 0 OT Game #18

Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE forward Jesse Ismond scored the games’ only goal in a 1-0 overtime win over the Seattle Thunderbirds in WHL action on Sunday night.

The only goal was scored with 1:06 left in overtime as Dominik Pacovsky fed the puck to middle slot and Jesse Ismond fired a one-time slap shot that went through the goalies’ legs.

It was Todd Mathews 3rd career shutout.
