Kennewick, Wash – The ICE opened their preseason with a 6-2 loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds.
Seattle looked like a club who was playing their 5th preseason game as they were very sharp.
Thunderbirds dominated the 1st period as they outshot the ICE 11-2 and scored 3 goals by finding loose pucks near the net.
The ICE had a solid 2nd period and had 5 odd man rushes but failed to generate a great scoring chance.
When they did goalie Calvin Pickard, a 2nd round pick of Colorado and maybe the best goalie in the world in his age group, was there to shut the door.
Seattle scored 2 shorthanded goals in the 2nd period.
Todd Mathews started in net for the ICE and gave up 4 goals on 19 shots. Mackenzie Skapski played the last 30+ minutes and gave up 2 goals on 17 shots.
ICE scored 2 goals less than a minute a part midway through the 3rd period.
From the corner Levi Cable fed Joe Antilla near the front of the net and he ended Pickard’s perfect game.
52 seconds later Elgin Pearce and Jared Iron got it to Eric Benoit who redirected a pass through the goalies’ legs.
The ICE played most of the 3rd period with 4 defensemen as John Neibrandt and James Martin received game misconducts for fighting.
The ICE had 9 veterans in the line-up and the Thunderbirds had 13.
As promised, the ICE are letting the younger players get the majority of the playing time as they try to earn one of few spots on the roster.
ICE will play against Portland Saturday and Tri City on Sunday.
