WHL Imports
Tomas Polak, who was a healthy scratch numerous times in the past few weeks, has left the Red Deer Rebels and returned home to the Czech Republic. By my count that leave 32 import players in the WHL. With 22 teams and 2 per team allowed the maximum would be 44.
Max Brandl, Ondrej Roman and Luca Sbisa returned to the WHL past the midway point of the season or else the total would be below 30.
Here is the unofficial country-by-country totals.
Czech Rep 13
Slovakia 7
Finland 3
Sweden 3
Russia 1
Belarus 1
Austria 1
Slovenia 1
Germany 1
Switzerland 1

Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced Head Coach Mark Holick has signed a two-year contract extension with the Club through the 2010-2011 season.
“Mark and his entire coaching staff have done an excellent job with the Hockey Club not only this year, but last season as well. Despite having the second youngest team in the WHL and having injuries to key players we have remained in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference and in position to qualify for the post season. With the majority of our Club eligible to return next season and with the improvement shown by our younger players, it is very important that the continuity between the players and Head Coach continue”, continued Chynoweth.
Mark Holick was named the fourth Head Coach in franchise history in August 2007. Prior to joining the ICE, Holick worked in the both the British Columbia Hockey League (1994-2003, 2006-2007) and Alberta Junior Hockey League (2003-2006) as both a Head Coach and Assistant Coach. He was also the Head Coach of Team Pacific at the 2004 World Under 17 Tournament and led them to a second place finish. Holick played in the Western Hockey League with the Saskatoon Blades and New Westminster Bruins (1984-1987) and was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs (11th round – 216th overall) in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.

Stability and continuity are the key to any successful organization and these three gentlemen are a big part of what we are all trying to achieve”, continued Chynoweth.

Red Deer 2 Kootenay 1
Rebels beat the ICE for the 3rd time this season with a 2-1 win in Red Deer. All the goals were scored in the 2nd period. Drew Czerwonka scored on a power-play rebound. ICE never generated many great scoring chances even though they were credited with 34 shots.
With 2.2 second the ICE scored, but after a long discussion the officials ruled the net had come off before the puck went in. No one is 100% sure if the goal should have counted so it was a guess.
On the broadcast I mentioned I saw the ICE celebrate, noticed the net came off it's support and the red light was turned on. All of that happened with 1-2 seconds. From my far angle I never saw the puck go in. The officials did see the puck did go into the net. As was mentioned I have no idea if the right call was made.
As in all disputed goals I have sympathy for the officials with no replay to use.
The fact it was a possible tying goal and not a winning goal made me think it was going to be ruled a goal.
Rematch Sunday at the Rec-Plex.

Boomer Update
During tonight's broadcast we'll talk with Steele Boomer who has returned from Edmonton after seeing a specialist about his concussion. Everything is very positive and now there is a chance he could play again this season. Over the next few days he will ride the bike. If he remains symptom free he will then be allowed to skate at practice in non-contact drills. If he is still feeling great then he will eventually take part in contact drills. After those 2 weeks of activity they will decide if he can suit-up again this season.

Baseball
The Homerun Society made their presenation to City Hall on Monday. The best case senario is to have lights for Confederation this year while a new stadium is built in Moir Park. That way they can join the WMBL this season. Plus the groundwork can be laid for a College team to join the High School team and the Bandits for baseball programs in Cranbrook.

Clouston vs Stoll
New Ottawa Coach Cory Clouston will be behind the bench for his 1st NHL game tonight against Jarret Stoll and the LA Kings.
Here is an except from the Ottawa Citizen.
Cory Clouston, never one to let down his guard, wouldn't even let his closest friends in on the biggest announcement of his hockey career. So, late Sunday, after packing his belongings in Binghamton, New York, Clouston called an old friend in Grande Prairie, Alta., leaving a message for a director of the Tier 2 junior hockey team which gave Clouston his first head coaching job that he might want to keep an eye on TSN. All Clouston's message said was that he wanted to let Don Moon know "something is happening." So even in Grande Prairie, just as in Ottawa, there was more than mild surprise when general manager Bryan Murray tabbed the former coach of the Grande Prairie Storm as the guy to turn around the fortunes of the National Hockey League's Senators. Clouston knows some of the faces in the Senators' room. Brendan Bell, Brian Elliott, Nick Foligno, Brian Lee, Peter Regin and the injured Cody Bass all spent significant time with Clouston. They might have been surprised that he was Murray's choice at this time, but they all left Binghamton thinking Clouston's time would come eventually. "He is all business, he is all work," Bell said. "He's a work-ethic type of guy. He is assertive and he gets his message across, and he's 24/7 at the rink." Said Lee: "He loves hockey and he loves to work, but, if you work hard, you will gain his respect."

Cory Clouston in The Show
Cory Clouston is the new Head Coach of the NHL Ottawa Senators.
From the TSN website ...
The 39-year-old Clouston, who was named head coach of the AHL Sens on July 19, 2007, holds a 59-48-12-8 all-time AHL record.
"I expect a lot from the players," Clouston said. "What (the players) are lacking, I think that I can help them out. When I spoke to the guys I said, 'we're all in this together...When you look at the big picture, I'm very confident in myself and the biggest thing is, I believe in the guys in the dressing room."
10 Things I Think I Think
1. I Think if the ICE finish their remaining schedule with a .500 record (9-9-1) they'll finish the season with 76 points. To miss the playoffs the 3 of the 4 teams behind them in the standings will have to at least have these records. Lethbridge 10-8-0-0, Regina 12-5-1, Edmonton 12-4-1, Prince Albert 12-3-1.
2. I Think the ICE play Edmonton 2 more times, Prince Albert twice, Regina once and Lethbridge twice.
Edmonton plays Lethbridge 1 more time, Regina once and no more against Prince Albert.
Lethbridge has 1 more game against Regina and no more against Prince Albert.
Prince Albert and Regina meet 2 more times.
3. I Think if the ICE don't finish with a .500 record down the stretch how they do against those mentioned teams will decide their fate.
4. I Think every game feels like a playoff game when you aren't in a comfortable spot in the standings.
5. I Think a stat that has caught my attention is Hayden Rintoul with 7 goals and Brayden McNabb with 6 goals. The ICE haven't had a lot of defensemen in their history that have scored a lot of goals. 43 Steve McCarthy, 36 Mike Busto, 27 Trevor Johnson, 25 Chad Greenan. Busto scored 20 in a season. Now they may have 2 at the same time. Remember they're only 17-years-old. Hitmen Paul Postma leads the league with 16 goals this season and he had 5 as a 17-year-old. Giants Jon Blum also has 16 goals and had 8 when he was 17-years-old.
6. I Think there has been a lot of positive buzz in the Kootenay's with the ICE. Look for another great announcement to come soon.
7. I Think the negative people are still trying to make noise but are being drowned out. Hopefully be to silenced soon. Then again these type of people never give up. So sad.
8. I Think I was disturbed to read on Hitmen insider blog that 960 The Fan's Mike Richards was the MC at the AJHL All-Star banquet and put down the WHL. John Down at http://communities.canada.com/calgaryherald/blogs/hitmeninsider/default.aspx reports "Although we don’t have his exact words, Richards, the emcee, suggested that players were lucky to be in the AJHL because if they were playing in the Dub, they’d have nothing to look forward to once they were done. It’d be back to the lumber yard to work, or something along those lines."
First of all The Fan broadcasts WHL games.
Secondly it's fine to have an opinion of the playing in the WHL or not but at least get the facts right.
9. I Think the game of the week is Friday when Vancouver visits Spokane.
10. I Think these are my non hockey thoughts.
(a) I Think I've been a Steelers fan forever and were a fun team to watch this season.
(b) I Think I picked Federer to win the Australian Open but thought Nadal would win if he got to the final. In my bracket selection I had Nadal out in the quarter-finals. WRONG.
(c) I Think it's been a unique winter in Cranbrook. Except for a 2-week stretch in December where we had tons of snow to shovel everyday, there hasn't been much snow all season.
